Capture a window or a rectangular area
- Press Print Screen to launch the screenshooter.
- Use the screenshooter controls to choose the relevant capture mode: the full screen, a window, or an area.
- Confirm with Enter and complete any selection the interface requests.
This is the reliable Xfce workflow when you need something other than the entire display. The exact controls can vary with the installed Kali and Xfce versions, so do not assume that a particular save folder or dialog label is universal.
Start and stop a recording
- Press Ctrl+Print Screen.
- When the screen recorder opens, press Enter to start recording.
- Use the recorder’s stop control when you have finished.

The overlay is useful when you want to change the target or include or exclude the pointer without memorizing a separate combination. Pressing V changes the tool from a still screenshot to a recording mode.
Start or stop a GNOME screencast
Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R to start or stop screencast recording. This is a toggle: use the same combination again to stop.
Why Print Screen behaves differently in Kali
The key is handled by the desktop environment, not by a single Kali-wide shortcut layer. Xfce opens its screenshooter and waits for confirmation, while GNOME provides direct full-screen, window and area combinations plus an overlay. Therefore, copying a GNOME shortcut into an Xfce session (or vice versa) can appear to do nothing or open a different tool.
If you recently changed sessions, a shortcut may have changed without any keyboard change. Confirm the active Xfce or GNOME session before troubleshooting the hardware.

Keyboard and hardware checks
Laptop keyboards with an Fn layer
On many laptops, the printed screenshot function is a secondary action. Hold Fn while pressing the key marked PrtSc, PrtScn or Print Screen. The exact combination is manufacturer-specific, so inspect the legends on your keyboard rather than assuming that Fn is always required.
Compact keyboards without a dedicated key
If the built-in keyboard has no key exposing the Print Screen function, an external USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key is an optional workaround. It is not necessary when your existing keyboard already exposes the function through a normal key or an Fn layer.
Key labels and layouts
Use the label that corresponds to the physical Print Screen function, even if your key says PrtSc rather than Prnt Scrn. On a non-US layout, the position and printed abbreviation can differ while the function remains the same.
Where is the screenshot saved?
The shortcut instructions establish how to initiate a capture, but they do not establish one save directory for every Kali desktop, version or configuration. Xfce’s screenshooter and GNOME’s capture tool can present different save behavior. After capturing, read the confirmation or save dialog and note the path it reports. For repeatable automation, choose an explicit destination in the capture tool or move the resulting file yourself instead of relying on an assumed default folder.

Troubleshooting Kali screenshot shortcuts
Nothing happens when you press Print Screen
- Confirm whether you are in Xfce or GNOME; the expected command differs.
- Try the laptop’s Fn layer if Print Screen is a secondary key function.
- On a compact keyboard, connect a keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key and test again.
- Press the complete sequence for your session: Xfce requires Print Screen followed by Enter; GNOME uses the direct combinations listed above.
The wrong window is captured in GNOME
Alt+Prnt Scrn captures the focused window. Click the window you want first, then repeat the shortcut. If you need a precise rectangle rather than a window, use Shift+Prnt Scrn and select the area.
Xfce opens a tool but does not save a file
Opening the screenshooter is only the first step. Press Enter to confirm the capture, then follow the tool’s save controls. For window or area captures, select the mode before confirming.
You started a screenshot instead of a recording
Check the session-specific recording command. Xfce uses Ctrl+Print Screen, then Enter. GNOME uses Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R. In the GNOME overlay, V switches between screenshot and screencast modes.
The pointer is missing or visible unexpectedly
