Before you rely on your new iPhone 18 Pro Max, protect it, complete setup without wiping your old phone prematurely, confirm cellular service, install available updates, and check that your charger supports the speeds you expect. Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. Here’s a practical first-day checklist.
What should I do first with my new iPhone 18 Pro Max?
- Fit a case made for this exact model. Check that the product listing explicitly says “iPhone 18 Pro Max.” Apple announced MagSafe cases for the Pro models, but confirm MagSafe support separately if you plan to use MagSafe accessories. An older Pro Max case should not be assumed to fit.
- Set up the phone and transfer your data. Turn it on and follow Apple’s on-device prompts and setup instructions: iPhone 18 Pro Max user guide. Keep your old phone available until you have checked that the information and services you need are on the new one. Do not erase, trade in, or give away the old device until you have confirmed your transfer is complete.
- Activate cellular service with your carrier. Follow your carrier’s instructions to activate or transfer your plan. Apple says eSIM requires a carrier that supports it and a wireless service plan. Availability and transfer steps can differ by carrier, country, and plan, so confirm the process with your provider if you need service immediately.
- Install any available iOS update. Apple says iOS 27 became available on September 14, 2026. Check the phone’s update screen and install an available update when you can keep the device connected and powered. Features may vary by language, region, and local law. Apple Intelligence language support is limited, and Siri AI is rolling out as a beta with regional exceptions, including initial unavailability in the EU; don’t assume every advertised feature is available where you are.
- Check your charging equipment. For wired fast charging, Apple specifies a separately sold USB-C cable capable of 60W and a USB Power Delivery 3.1-or-better adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS). Charging speed varies with equipment, settings, use, and environment, so a USB-C connector alone does not establish fast-charge compatibility. See Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max technical specifications.
- Learn the controls you’ll use often. The guide covers Face ID gestures, the Action button, Camera Control, and MagSafe charging. Use Apple’s model-specific user guide for instructions rather than assuming controls or hardware are identical in every region. Apple notes that the SIM tray is not available in all regions.
Check your model and storage
Apple lists the iPhone 18 Pro Max in four finishes—black, silver, glacier, and burgundy—and four storage capacities: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. If you are ordering a case, screen protector, or other fit-specific accessory, use the full model name rather than relying on “Pro Max” alone.
