JSON is one serialized value; JSONL (JSON Lines) is a sequence of JSON values separated by line breaks. Use ordinary JSON for a single document, such as an API request, configuration file, or nested object. Use JSONL when independent records should be appended, streamed, piped through command-line tools, or processed one at a time. A JSON array can hold many records, but it is still one JSON document; JSONL gives every record its own document boundary.
What is JSON?
RFC 8259 defines JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) as a text format for serializing structured data. A JSON text is one serialized value. That value may be an object, array, string, number, Boolean, or null.
{
"user_id": 42,
"name": "Maya",
"roles": ["editor", "analyst"]
}
Objects contain unordered name/value pairs. Arrays contain an ordered sequence of values. Nested objects and arrays let one document represent a complete, hierarchical payload. The registered media type is application/json, which is the usual Content-Type for JSON APIs.
Typical JSON uses
- REST or GraphQL request and response bodies
- Application and tool configuration
- One document exported from a database
- Nested data that must be validated or exchanged as a unit
What is JSONL?
JSON Lines is a convention for a text file or stream containing multiple JSON values, with one value per line. Each line is a complete JSON text, so a consumer can read and parse records independently.

The JSON Lines documentation describes it as a format for structured data that can be processed one record at a time. This makes it useful for logs, bulk exports, shell pipelines, and producer/consumer processes.
NDJSON (newline-delimited JSON) describes a closely related convention. Its 1.0.0 specification requires each JSON text to be followed by LF (n); CRLF (rn) is also accepted. Records must not contain raw newline or carriage-return characters. The terms are often treated as synonyms, but software may impose different media-type, blank-line, or error-handling rules.
JSONL vs. JSON: the differences that affect design
| Decision point | JSON | JSONL / NDJSON |
|---|---|---|
| Top-level organization | One JSON value, commonly an object or array | A sequence of JSON values, one per line |
| Parsing model | Often parsed as one document | Records can be parsed as they arrive |
| Appending | Appending to an array requires preserving commas, brackets, and valid document syntax | A new record can normally be added as another line |
| Common uses | API payloads, configuration, complete nested documents | Logs, bulk records, streams, process pipelines |
| Media type | application/json is registered by RFC 8259 |
JSON Lines mentions application/jsonl as a possible but non-standard choice; NDJSON recommends application/x-ndjson |
These are format tendencies, not promises about memory usage or streaming. A library may load a JSONL file into memory, and an API may stream an ordinary JSON array. Check the receiving software’s contract.
JSON array or JSONL: which should you choose?
Choose JSON when the payload is one logical document
- The receiver expects one object or array in one request.
- Records are tightly related and should pass or fail validation together.
- Consumers need the complete structure before processing.
- You need standard API interoperability with
application/json.
{
"batch_id": "2026-09-30-01",
"items": [
{"sku":"A10","quantity":2},
{"sku":"B20","quantity":1}
]
}
Choose JSONL when records are independent
- New events arrive continuously and should be handled immediately.
- A producer should append without rewriting earlier records.
- You want Unix tools to filter or transform one record per line.
- A failed record should be isolated rather than invalidating an entire export.
- You are moving large datasets through a line-oriented pipeline.
JSONL does not automatically make processing low-memory or faster. The reader must actually parse incrementally, and downstream indexing, validation, or batching can still consume substantial resources.

Can JSON contain multiple records?
Yes. A top-level array can contain any number of values:
[
{"id":1,"status":"ready"},
{"id":2,"status":"queued"}
]
This remains one JSON document. The closing bracket is needed for validity, and appending safely requires managing commas and concurrent writers. In JSONL, each object is a separate JSON text:
{"id":1,"status":"ready"}
{"id":2,"status":"queued"}
That distinction is about boundaries and processing contracts, not whether the data is conceptually a list.
JSONL and NDJSON compatibility rules
Encoding and separators
JSON Lines and NDJSON require UTF-8. JSON Lines says a byte-order mark must not be included. NDJSON uses LF as the normative separator and permits CRLF. Writers should emit one record per line and terminate records consistently.

Newlines inside values
A raw newline cannot occur inside a JSONL record because it would look like a record boundary. Put a newline in a string using the escaped sequence n:
{"message":"first linensecond line"}
Blank lines
Do not assume blank-line behavior. NDJSON allows parsers to ignore empty lines only when that behavior is documented; JSON Lines implementations vary. Define whether an empty line is skipped, treated as an error, or counted as a record.
Malformed records
The NDJSON specification says malformed JSON should cause an error. In production, decide whether the stream stops, the bad line is sent to a quarantine file, or processing continues with an error report. Document that policy for both producers and consumers.
Reading and writing JSONL safely
Python: stream records one at a time
import json
with open("events.jsonl", "r", encoding="utf-8") as source:
for line_number, line in enumerate(source, start=1):
if not line.strip():
continue # only if blank lines are allowed by your contract
try:
event = json.loads(line)
except json.JSONDecodeError as exc:
raise ValueError(f"Invalid JSON on line {line_number}") from exc
process(event)
Writing is symmetrical: serialize each value with a compact representation and append exactly one newline.
with open("events.jsonl", "a", encoding="utf-8") as target:
target.write(json.dumps({"event":"heartbeat","ok":True}) + "n")
Command-line inspection
Because each record occupies one line, tools such as head, tail, grep, and line-oriented ETL programs can inspect a file without parsing the entire dataset. Do not use plain text matching as a substitute for JSON parsing when values can contain escaped characters or nested structures.
Network streams
For an HTTP endpoint that emits JSONL, agree on the media type and flush behavior. A consumer should handle partial network reads: a TCP chunk is not necessarily a complete line. Buffer bytes until a line ending arrives, decode as UTF-8, then parse the complete JSON text.
Media types and API contracts
Use application/json for ordinary JSON unless the API specifies another type. There is no universally registered JSONL media type in the JSON Lines documentation. NDJSON recommends application/x-ndjson and the .ndjson extension. Some services use application/jsonl. Send and accept exactly what the server documents; do not infer compatibility from a filename alone.
Operational trade-offs
Appending and concurrency
Appending a line is simpler than editing an array, but it is not automatically atomic. Multiple writers can interleave bytes, and a crash can leave a truncated final line. Use one writer, an append-safe queue, file locks, or a transactional storage layer. Consumers should decide whether to ignore an incomplete last line during recovery.

Validation and schema evolution
Validate each JSONL record independently and include a version field when schemas may evolve. A JSON document can validate its whole structure at once; JSONL needs record-level validation plus a policy for mixed versions.
Compression and indexing
JSONL compresses well because records repeat field names, but compression can reduce random access. If you need fast lookup, pair the file with an index or load it into a system designed for querying. A JSON array also benefits from compression but is usually treated as one unit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting JSON and JSONL
- “Unexpected character after JSON.” You supplied multiple JSON values where a parser expects one document. Use a JSONL reader or wrap values in a valid array.
- Only the first record is processed. The consumer likely calls a single-document parser on the whole stream. Iterate over lines or use the library’s JSONL/NDJSON mode.
- Records merge together. The producer omitted line endings. Emit one LF after every JSON text.
- Windows files fail in a Unix pipeline. Check CRLF handling and normalize line endings if the consumer does not accept CRLF.
- “Invalid UTF-8” or strange first character. Re-encode as UTF-8 and remove a byte-order mark.
- One bad event stops a long import. Add line-numbered error handling and a quarantine path, while following the receiving specification’s malformed-record policy.
- Memory usage is still high. Confirm that the library is iterating incrementally; also inspect batching, indexing, and downstream queues.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits when JSONL is part of a capture pipeline
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a JSON or JSONL parser. If your pipeline records capture jobs, store one job result per JSONL line while the API returns the image or PDF itself. ScreenshotNeo’s clean shots remove cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
It also offers MCP tools for AI agents, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.
Or skip the browser setup
For a capture whose metadata you then append as JSONL, make one request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is JSONL valid JSON?
Each individual JSONL line is valid JSON, but a multi-line JSONL file is not one valid JSON document because it contains multiple top-level values.
Should I use .jsonl or .ndjson?
Use the extension required by the receiving software. The names describe similar line-delimited formats, but media-type and blank-line rules can differ.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a JSONL record span several physical lines?
Not in the usual JSONL/NDJSON contract. Keep each JSON text on one line and escape embedded newlines inside strings.
