Short answer: JSON is usually the simpler default for web APIs because people and common HTTP tools can inspect it directly. MessagePack is worth evaluating when compact binary encoding or native binary values matter, but it is not automatically smaller or faster once compression, runtimes, libraries, and client support are considered. Benchmark representative traffic through the complete production path before switching.
What JSON and MessagePack encode
JSON represents data using text: objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, and null. MessagePack is a binary serialization format with types for integers, floats, strings, binary data, arrays, maps, nil, booleans, and extensions. It can encode many JSON-like structures, but it is not simply JSON with punctuation removed; its type system includes values that JSON does not represent directly.
That difference makes the API contract important. A MessagePack client and server need to agree on how values are interpreted, especially when an application may use binary values, map keys that are not strings, numeric ranges, or extension types. The MessagePack specification describes profiles that restrict semantics for a particular use case—for example, requiring string map keys—and discusses compatibility modes for implementation upgrades.
Is MessagePack smaller than JSON?
It can be, but there is no reliable universal percentage. MessagePack uses compact binary headers for values and lengths. For example, the specification provides compact encodings for strings up to 31 bytes and arrays or maps up to 15 elements. Textual punctuation and repeated numeric syntax may therefore cost fewer bytes, but the result depends on payload structure, value types, string lengths, and key repetition.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compression changes the comparison: gzip or Brotli may shrink JSON substantially, and can alter the relative difference between formats. Compare both uncompressed and compressed wire sizes using the production compression configuration rather than treating a raw serialization result as the full network cost.
One C++20 release-build benchmark published by Stephen Berry in December 2025 measured a complex nested object at 616 B in JSON and 545 B in MessagePack. Those numbers describe that workload and those implementations only; they are not a prediction for another API. The same benchmark’s 10K-element numeric-vector cases also showed that the gap varies with data and type. See the benchmark and its results.

Is MessagePack faster?
Sometimes, for some operations and implementations. Serialization and deserialization can have different winners, and a result from one language or synthetic payload does not establish performance in another stack. Include the full path—conversion to or from bytes, compression, allocation, transport, and application processing—in the measurement.
JavaScript project benchmark
The MessagePack JavaScript project’s benchmark documentation reports results using Node.js v22.13.1 and V8 12.4. Its table lists JSON.stringify plus Buffer conversion at 269,740 operations per second and JSON.parse after UTF-8 conversion at 340,060 operations per second; @msgpack/msgpack reports 247,740 operations per second for encode and 280,400 for decode. These are figures from the project’s benchmark setup, not proof that one format is universally faster. The project notes that its JSON path converts a JavaScript string to a byte array to emulate I/O, while MessagePack paths already use byte arrays. Review the project’s benchmark documentation.

C++ benchmark
In Stephen Berry’s December 2025 C++20 benchmark, MessagePack wrote the complex nested object at 1.46 GB/s versus JSON at 1.37 GB/s, while read throughput was 254.72 MB/s for MessagePack versus 1.31 GB/s for JSON. The sharp difference between write and read results is a useful reminder to measure both directions; it is not a forecast for other implementations. The benchmark describes its setup and workload.
The MessagePack JavaScript project cautions that performance depends on the situation and recommends benchmarking the intended use case when performance matters. Independent serialization-benchmark research likewise discusses limitations involving workload representativity, reproducibility, compression, and version choice. Read the 2022 benchmark paper.

Compatibility and API operation
JSON’s practical advantage is visibility: developers can read payloads in logs, browser tools, and many HTTP clients without a special decoder. MessagePack requires compatible encoders and decoders on every client and server, plus a documented profile for values beyond the common JSON data model. Teams should define behavior for binary versus string values, map-key types, numeric ranges, and extension types. If serialized bytes are hashed or signed, specify whether deterministic encoding and map ordering are required.
For HTTP APIs, document the media type and content-negotiation behavior, error responses, rollout plan, and how operators will inspect payloads. If supporting both formats during migration, ensure clients can identify which representation they receive and test mixed-version deployments and malformed inputs.

Streaming needs framing too
A stream needs a way to distinguish message boundaries, regardless of the serialization format. Google Cloud’s HTTP guidance describes JSON streaming with explicit framing; its documented StreamBody wire encoding adds 2–3 bytes per message. That is an example-specific framing cost, not evidence that JSON or MessagePack is inherently better for streaming. Include framing and transport overhead in the comparison. See Google Cloud’s HTTP streaming guidance.
How to benchmark your API before choosing
- Build a representative payload set. Include small and large responses, nested objects, repeated keys, numeric arrays, and binary-heavy cases if your API uses them.
- Use the actual runtimes and maintained libraries. Record library versions and relevant configuration for both server and client; do not compare a production library against an unrelated or outdated implementation.
- Measure bytes at both stages. Record serialized size and bytes after the production gzip or Brotli setting, including any framing used by the API.
- Measure more than throughput. Track encode and decode CPU time, allocations, peak memory, and end-to-end p50 and p95 latency at expected concurrency.
- Test operational behavior. Verify client support, mixed-version rollout, malformed-payload handling, content negotiation, and the practical ability to log or inspect traffic.
- Make the result reproducible. Record payloads, runtime and library versions, CPU, warm-up, iterations, compression settings, and raw measurements. Benchmark methodology matters: published research identifies representativity, reproducibility, compression, and version choice as factors that can change comparisons. See the benchmark paper.
Which format should you choose?
| Choose | When it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| JSON | Human inspection, broad tooling support, or straightforward client integration is a priority. | Textual encoding may use more raw bytes for some payloads, though compression can change the gap. |
| MessagePack | Measurements on your real workload justify the binary format, or native binary values are useful to the API. | Every client needs compatible decoding and agreement on profile choices; observability and migration need planning. |
| Both, during a transition | You can support explicit content negotiation or another unambiguous way to select and identify the representation. | Maintaining and testing two encodings increases implementation and compatibility work. |
For a new general-purpose web API without a measured need for a binary format, JSON is a defensible default. Treat MessagePack as an optimization or data-model choice to validate—not a guaranteed size or speed upgrade.
