Use JSON Schema to validate the structure of AI-generated data, and use a spreadsheet template to organize, calculate, and review the financial model. They solve different problems, so the strongest workflow often uses both: validate a structured data object, transfer approved values into a controlled workbook, then review the formulas and financial logic independently.

What JSON Schema and a spreadsheet template each do

JSON Schema defines a data contract

JSON Schema is a declarative language for annotating and validating the structure, constraints, and data types of JSON documents. Its specification identifies Draft 2020-12 as the current version and separates Core from Validation, which defines validation keywords. See the official JSON Schema documentation and Draft 2020-12 Core specification. A schema can state that fields are required, values have particular types, and selected values or ranges are allowed. The validator must support the dialect and features you choose; tools should not be assumed to interpret every draft identically.

A spreadsheet template defines a workbook surface

A spreadsheet template provides a prepared layout for entering assumptions, performing calculations, and presenting outputs. It can help preserve an existing model’s structure and designate where data belongs, but the template alone does not establish that inputs, assumptions, or formulas are correct.

Excel’s XML mapping features can map XML schema elements to worksheet cells or tables, import and export mapped data, and use XML as input to an existing calculation model. Microsoft also documents mapping XML elements onto existing cells to extend an Excel template. This is XML/XSD functionality—not direct mapping of a JSON Schema file to cells. See Microsoft’s Excel XML mapping guidance.

Which approach fits each part of the job?

Decision point JSON Schema Spreadsheet template
Primary role Machine-readable constraints for JSON structure, types, and selected data rules. Workbook structure for human entry, calculation, inspection, and presentation.
Best fit Check data at generation or interface boundaries before another system consumes it. Place values into designated cells and work with an established layout or calculation model.
Can help establish Whether data follows the declared contract, when checked by a compatible validator. Where assumptions and outputs are presented and how calculations are organized.
Does not establish by itself Financial meaning, realistic assumptions, formula correctness, or business suitability. Correct inputs, sound assumptions, or error-free formulas just because the workbook uses a template.

This is a workflow distinction based on documented capabilities, not a published head-to-head performance test. Neither approach is a substitute for checking whether a financial model makes sense.

How to use both in an AI modeling workflow

  1. Define the data contract. Specify required fields, types, permitted categories, units, currency, period labels, and how null or empty values should be represented. Choose a JSON Schema dialect and a validator that supports it.
  2. Generate and validate the structured data. Run the generated JSON through the validator before passing it downstream. This can catch malformed or out-of-contract data; it cannot determine whether a forecast is economically plausible.
  3. Populate a controlled workbook. Map approved values to designated input locations while preserving the template’s named input and output locations. Document which formulas are maintained by the workbook and which values are supplied externally. Excel XML mapping is one documented option for XML data; it does not turn JSON Schema into a cell-mapping mechanism.
  4. Review the workbook independently. Check formulas for consistency, confirm units and dates, verify signs and source links, test scenario behavior, and inspect key outputs. Have a qualified reviewer challenge assumptions and check edge cases.

Where Excel Copilot workbook rules fit

Microsoft says to “Use rules with Copilot in Excel to standardize the appearance and behavior of a particular workbook.” Its guidance describes storing concise instructions in a visible worksheet titled .Rules; rules can cover formatting, custom functions, layout, and formula-driven behavior. See Microsoft’s Copilot in Excel rules guidance.

Microsoft notes that rules are fully supported only in English and that behavior can vary across models and over time. Treat them as changeable instructions, not controls that guarantee accurate formulas or financial results.

What AI spreadsheet benchmarks do—and do not—show

The 2025 Alpha Excel Benchmark paper by David Noever and Forrest McKee reports that 113 Financial Modeling World Cup challenges were converted into JSON formats for programmatic evaluation. The authors report variation across challenge categories, including stronger pattern-recognition results and difficulty with complex numerical reasoning. This indicates that performance can vary by task; it does not compare JSON Schema with spreadsheet templates or show that either guarantees reliable models. See the 2025 Alpha Excel Benchmark preprint.

The available evidence does not establish a measured winner for accuracy, time savings, or error rate between these two approaches. Treat schema validation and workbook review as complementary controls, not as evidence of a performance uplift.

Important Excel terminology: JSON metadata is not JSON Schema validation

Excel’s JavaScript API documentation describes JSON metadata schemas for cell values, with shared properties such as type, basicType, and basicValue; entity values can also contain text, nested data types, and arrays. That describes an API representation of Excel cell values, not proof that a workbook validates its financial model against an arbitrary JSON Schema. See Microsoft’s Excel JavaScript API documentation for cell values.
