In jQuery, a selector identifies DOM elements; methods then act on the matched set. For example, $("#myId").addClass("active") selects the element with that ID and adds a class. The core syntax is $(selector).methodName();, and jQuery methods can be chained. DZone Refcard #007 calls selectors “one of the most important aspects of the jQuery library.”
How do I select an element by ID or class in jQuery?
Use CSS-style selector syntax inside $(). These examples use selectors supported by jQuery 3.7.1; the exact extensions available can differ by version.

An ID selector is intended to match a unique element. A class or tag selector can match many elements; methods such as .addClass() will apply to the entire matched set.
Combine selectors to express relationships
Whitespace selects descendants at any depth; > selects direct children; + selects the immediately following sibling; and ~ selects subsequent siblings with the same parent. For example, $('#contents ul.people li') matches list items within a ul with class people, anywhere inside the element with ID contents.

What is the difference between CSS selectors and jQuery selectors?
Most familiar jQuery selectors are CSS selectors: the same syntax for tags, IDs, classes, attributes, and relationships used to find elements in CSS. jQuery also supports its own selector extensions, including content, positional, visibility, and form-oriented selectors. The distinction matters for portability and maintenance: a selector using a jQuery extension is not necessarily valid in a CSS stylesheet or native browser selector API.
Examples below identify the jQuery-specific extensions explicitly. jQuery’s selector API and available extensions vary by version; check the official jQuery selector documentation for the version in use, including documented deprecations.

Use positional and content extensions deliberately
:firstmatches the first element in the selected set;:eq(n)matches the element at the zero-based indexn. These are jQuery extensions, not CSS selectors.:contains(text)matches elements whose text contains the specified text, and:has(selector)matches elements that contain a descendant matching the nested selector. Both are jQuery extensions.:visibleis a jQuery visibility extension. Its result depends on jQuery’s visibility rules, rather than simply whether an element is visually obvious on screen.
For selectors that can be costly to evaluate, narrow the set with a standard CSS selector first, then use a jQuery filter when appropriate. The jQuery Learning Center discusses selector handling and the importance of valid selector syntax.
How do attribute and form selectors work?
Attribute selectors match elements based on an attribute’s presence or value. CSS-style attribute patterns include presence ([name]), exact value ([name='first_name']), prefix ([name^='first']), suffix ([name$='name']), substring ([name*='rst']), whitespace-separated word ([class~='chosen']), and hyphen-prefix ([lang|='en']).

For example, $("input[name='first_name']") selects inputs whose name attribute is exactly first_name. Quote attribute values when they contain characters that could be parsed as selector syntax.
Target form elements and their state
:inputis a jQuery extension that selects form controls, including input, select, textarea, and button elements.:checkedselects checked checkboxes and radio buttons;:selectedselects selected options. These are useful when the desired match is based on current form state.
Selection and action are separate steps
$() creates a jQuery collection of matched elements; a method then operates on that collection. For example:

$('#myId').hide()selects the ID match and hides it.$('.myClass').addClass('active')adds a class to each matched element.$('#contents').find('li')searches within the already selected contents element.$('li').filter('.active')narrows an existing selection to matching active list items.
Chaining combines these steps when the next method should act on the collection returned by the previous one. To inspect what a selector matched, use the browser’s developer tools or check the collection’s .length.
Why does my selector return no elements?
A zero-length match usually means the selector is syntactically valid but does not match the DOM at the time it runs, or that its syntax is not valid for the selector engine.

- Check spelling and punctuation. IDs need
#, classes need., and attribute values must match the actual markup. - Check the relationship. A space means descendant, while
>means direct child. Use the combinator that reflects the real DOM structure. - Check when the code runs. If the target has not been added to the DOM yet, a selection made earlier will not include it. Run the selection after the element exists.
- Check special characters. Characters used in CSS selector notation may need escaping in an ID or other selector value. Consult the Learning Center guidance for IDs containing such characters.
- Check version-specific extensions. A selector may rely on a jQuery extension or deprecated syntax unavailable in the version loaded. Compare it with the official selector API for that version.
- Reduce the selector. Test a simple part first, such as
$('#contents'), then add the relationship or attribute condition one piece at a time.
