John Deere precision technology is compatible only when the specific display, software, receiver, guidance controller, machine, signal, activation, and implement requirements align. Start by recording the exact equipment and software in your cab, then check the compatibility documentation for that display generation and configuration. A StarFire receiver alone does not establish that AutoTrac or AutoPath will work.
What to check before deciding whether components are compatible
Compatibility depends on the intended operation and the complete equipment combination—not just on whether two products share the John Deere name. Record these details before consulting the compatibility tables or a dealer:
- Tractor or other machine model and serial number, plus implement model.
- Display family and installed software version.
- StarFire receiver model and software version.
- Guidance controller and installed AutoTrac mode, if applicable.
- Correction signal, application or activation, and any relevant implement control unit.
- The operation you want to perform, such as guidance or generating AutoPath lines.
Use the documentation for the display you actually have
John Deere’s StellarSupport hub organizes software releases, installation resources, archives, and compatibility links by product family and release. Find the documentation for your display generation and applicable software bundle; then check its compatibility table and any serial-number conditions. Do not treat a receiver list or compatibility entry in one display’s help as universal fitment evidence. For example, the receiver models listed in the 4640 StarFire help apply to that help context.
Check software currency without assuming the newest version fits
As displayed on StellarSupport on October 4, 2026, examples included StarFire 7500 software update 26.4, version 2.70F, released September 2026; G5/G5 Plus update 26.3, version 11.3.4160-XX, released June 2026; and GreenStar 3 2630 update 26.3, released July 2026. These are date-sensitive release listings, not a recommendation to install any one version. Confirm that the release applies to your equipment and configuration, read its release notes and installation instructions, and use the appropriate compatibility link before updating.

Verify each dependency separately
A compatible display and receiver do not by themselves confirm that a particular guidance feature is available. Check controller support, signal requirements, activations or licenses, implement requirements, region, account permissions, connectivity, and machine serial-number notes. If the published documentation does not resolve your specific combination, ask a John Deere dealer or support to verify the machine-specific fit.
What a StarFire receiver does—and what it does not establish
A StarFire receiver acquires positioning and differential-correction signals used by applications such as AutoTrac. It is one part of a precision system, not a substitute for checking the display, controller, software, signal, activation, machine, and implement requirements. Deere’s 4640 help lists StarFire 3000, 6000, 7000, and 7500 receivers for that documentation; do not extend that list to other display generations without checking their documentation.

The receiver’s integrated terrain compensation module (TCM) accounts for machine dynamics such as roll and pitch. The 4640 help says TCMs integrated into StarFire 6000, 7000, and 7500 receivers are factory-calibrated, while field calibration instructions are in the relevant receiver manual. Follow the receiver and display manuals for the specific installation rather than assuming mounting values or calibration steps are interchangeable.
How to set up or recalibrate the receiver’s TCM
For AutoTrac on a 4640, Deere’s help says TCM must be turned on. Accurate calibration matters because the TCM uses a zero roll and pitch reference; a mounting angle or an uneven calibration surface can contribute to consistent pass-to-pass skip or overlap.

- Park on a hard, flat, level surface. Use the onscreen calibration procedure for the display and receiver combination.
- Follow the two-direction procedure shown on screen. Keep tire positions consistent with the instructions for the machine’s axle and track configuration.
- If passes show persistent skip or overlap, recalibrate on level ground and compare the same pass in opposite directions. If the mismatch remains, the 4640 help directs the operator to measure the offset and enter it as the implement offset.
- Recalibrate when the receiver is attached or reattached, or when its angle relative to the machine changes. The help does not describe routine recalibration as necessary when those conditions have not changed.
Receiver direction, fore/aft position, height, correction mode and frequency, QuickStart, and hours-on-after-shutdown settings can also matter. The correct fore/aft reference depends on receiver placement and whether an implement pivots; an incorrect height can cause under- or over-compensation for machine roll. Check the documentation for your exact receiver and display before changing these settings. Deere’s step-by-step TCM instructions are in the 4640 TCM Calibration help.
What AutoPath requires
AutoPath creates guidance lines using recorded operation data, machine offsets, and track spacing. Requirements in Deere’s S7 Combine AutoPath help are specific to that feature and help context; confirm the applicable requirements for your machine and display.

AutoTrac Health is a diagnostic aid, not a guarantee that one displayed reading identifies the cause. On the 4640 help page, Deere says it can show off-track error, heading error, yaw rate, surface roughness, wheel slip, GPS accuracy, signal strength, installed AutoTrac mode, and wheel-angle information. Its stated off-track targets under good conditions vary with speed:

| Speed range in Deere’s 4640 help | Stated off-track target under good conditions |
|---|---|
| 4.8–12.9 km/h | 4 cm |
| 12.9–19.3 km/h | 8 cm |
| 19.3–24.1 km/h | 12 cm |
Use these as the 4640 help’s benchmarks for the stated good-condition context, not as universal performance guarantees. Deere’s help also says wheel slip greater than 6% may negatively affect AutoTrac performance. A wheel-angle sensor reading more than 1° off while traveling straight, as indicated by yaw rate, points to a bias that needs correction. These figures are Deere operational guidance, not independent agricultural research findings. See the 4640 AutoTrac Health help for the display-specific context.
Work through likely causes in a useful order
- Signal and positioning: Check the displayed signal strength and GPS accuracy, along with the correction mode and frequency configured for your setup.
- Receiver installation and calibration: Check mounting direction, height, fore/aft reference, and whether receiver attachment or angle has changed since calibration.
- Machine and implement: Review tire and machine setup, wheel slip, wheel-angle bias, and implement offsets. A consistent skip or overlap can warrant checking the measured implement offset.
- Operating conditions: Compare performance with the help page’s speed-specific good-condition benchmarks in mind; surface roughness and speed are among the displayed indicators.
- Guidance configuration: Confirm that the installed AutoTrac mode and controller are appropriate for the machine and intended operation.
When to use Operations Center or ask a dealer
John Deere describes Operations Center as supporting equipment and field setup, planning, monitoring, and analysis. Its listed features also include JDLink data connection and Remote Display Control support. What you can access depends on your account, local display, connectivity, and region.
Use connected support when the problem involves remote visibility or operations data; contact a dealer when you need machine-specific compatibility, serial-number fitment, or help interpreting a persistent setup issue. A dealer can verify the exact combination of machine, display, receiver, controller, software, signal, activation, and implement rather than relying on a component name alone.
