JetStream 3 is a benchmark for computationally intensive JavaScript and WebAssembly work in browsers—not a universal score for how fast every website feels. Released on March 31, 2026, it updates the suite with larger application-like workloads, more WebAssembly coverage and startup measurements that include more of the work needed to begin running a JavaScript application.
What JetStream 3 measures
JetStream exercises compute-heavy work that web applications may perform, including parsing, formatting, data conversion, algorithms, data structures, interpreters, language implementations and simulations. Those tasks are relevant to things such as browser games, physics simulations, cryptography, framework cores and complex algorithms.
That focus differs from a benchmark such as Speedometer, which measures user-interface rendering and DOM manipulation. JetStream can offer evidence about how an engine handles its particular compute workloads; it does not, by itself, tell you how responsive every site or browser interface will feel.
Browser-engine developers use repeatable workloads to look for regressions and assess engine changes. The workloads can also run in engine shells, which can help hardware and device vendors evaluate platforms in simulators or constrained environments. A shell is not a complete browser, however, so a shell score should not be treated as a direct prediction of the full browser experience.

What changed from JetStream 2
JetStream 3.0 arrived on March 31, 2026. The previous major release was in 2019. BrowserBench said the 1.5 years of work leading to version 3 involved more than 200 pull requests, changes to over 500 files and more than 70 workloads. BrowserBench’s announcement and Google’s release explanation describe the redesign.
Larger, more application-like work
The updated suite puts greater emphasis on larger applications and end-to-end tasks. Its designers say they aimed for workloads that represent varied real uses, cover different frameworks and toolchains, finish in a few minutes, limit memory and network demands, and produce repeatable results. These are workload-selection goals, not proof that every benchmark task predicts real-world performance perfectly.

More WebAssembly languages and capabilities
JetStream 3 adds 12 WebAssembly workloads and broadens coverage beyond its earlier C++ focus to include toolchains such as J2CL, Dart2wasm, Kotlin/Wasm, Rust and .NET. The workloads exercise newer Wasm capabilities, including SIMD, WasmGC and exception handling. Examples include Argon2 password hashing, client-side machine learning with Transformers.js, cross-platform UI, SQLite3 and .NET runtimes.
Google reports that WebAssembly makes up 15–20% of JetStream 3, compared with 7% in JetStream 2. Those proportions are Google’s description of the suite, not measurements of how often WebAssembly appears across the web.

JavaScript startup and application workloads
The JavaScript updates include larger application workloads and startup tests that account for parsing and framework setup, aiming to represent more of the work involved in an initial load. Named examples in Google’s release explanation include Babylon.js startup and execution, BigInt elliptic-curve work, asynchronous patterns, JavaScript and JSX tokenization, D3 with jsdom, MobX startup, syntax highlighting, Three.js, TypeScript 5.9 compilation, validation and React server-side rendering.
The release also updates Web Tooling Benchmark content, combines SunSpider subtests into one item, and fixes or removes workloads susceptible to benchmark artifacts.

How JetStream 3 scores work
One important scoring change concerns WebAssembly: JetStream 3 counts compilation and instantiation time as part of the first iteration. BrowserBench says this makes Wasm treatment more consistent with most JavaScript workloads and reduces the undue influence of quick instantiation on results.
The suite aggregates workload scores using a geometric mean, according to the WebKit/JetStream repository. Scores are dimensionless, and higher is better. Because the geometric mean responds to proportional changes, the same percentage improvement in any one workload has equal effect on the aggregate; a raw score is not a unit of speed such as seconds or frames per second.

How to compare JetStream results
A result is evidence about this benchmark on the tested setup, not a universal ranking of browser quality. For a useful comparison, check that the results align on the factors that can change what is being measured:
- Environment: full browser or engine shell, hardware, operating system and run conditions.
- Software: browser or engine version and the benchmark version.
- Workload coverage: whether the comparison emphasizes compute, UI and DOM responsiveness, startup costs, or particular languages and runtimes.
- Scoring: aggregation method and how startup or compilation time is counted.
Keep vendor-published figures distinct from independent, like-for-like testing. For example, Google reported a Chrome JetStream 3 score of 469 in a June 4, 2026 post and said the score had improved 10% since the start of that year. Those are Google’s vendor-reported results; the post does not make them an independent cross-browser comparison. See Google’s June 4 announcement for its claim and context.
What a JetStream 3 score can—and cannot—tell you
A high score indicates stronger performance on the suite’s selected compute-intensive JavaScript and WebAssembly workloads under the conditions of that run. It may be relevant when evaluating an engine change or a device for workloads that resemble those tests. It does not establish that a browser is better in every respect, that ordinary websites will load faster, or that users will notice a particular improvement.
The official release material describes intended uses and design goals, but does not establish a population-level relationship between JetStream scores and everyday user experience. For that reason, read a score alongside the workload mix and test setup, and use other measures for questions about interface responsiveness or broader browsing behavior.
