There is no universal winner. The best self-hosted media server for an old phone is the one whose current app still runs on that phone and can either play your files directly or have them converted by a server with enough capacity. Check the handset, operating system, media formats, and whether you watch locally or remotely before choosing.
Which self-hosted media server is best for an old phone?
Start with compatibility, not the server brand. A Jellyfin, Plex, or Emby app cannot make an old phone decode every video format. If the phone cannot play a file as stored, the server may need to convert it; that shifts the work to the server and can make a weak host the bottleneck.
Jellyfin’s codec support documentation marks H.264 8-bit as supported in its Android and iOS columns, while HEVC and some newer formats depend on the device or settings. The table describes recent client software and operating systems, however, so it does not guarantee playback on a legacy handset. Jellyfin’s stated goal is to “Direct Play all media,” but the phone’s actual capabilities still matter.
The available official documentation does not establish a dependable ranking of Jellyfin, Plex, and Emby for every old phone. Nor does it settle current minimum operating-system versions and exact legacy-phone behavior across all three services. Treat the comparison as a model-specific compatibility check rather than a blanket recommendation.

Check these factors before choosing
- Phone and OS: Identify the exact phone model and installed operating-system version. Confirm that the service’s current app can be installed on it.
- Media formats: Inspect a representative library file for its video codec, audio codec, container, and subtitle format. Compare those details with the phone’s playback support.
- Playback route: Decide whether you will watch on your home network or remotely. Remote viewing also depends on your connection’s upload capacity and the service’s current remote-access requirements.
- Server capacity: If the phone cannot play a file directly, check whether the chosen server can convert it and whether the server has sufficient CPU or supported hardware acceleration.
- Feature-specific terms: Check account or subscription requirements for the feature you actually need. Requirements for one feature, such as downloads, do not establish the rules for all playback or remote access.
Understand how playback affects an old phone
Direct Play
With Direct Play, the phone uses the file as stored because its container, video, audio, and subtitles are compatible. The server does not need to re-encode the media, so this route places less conversion work on the server.
Direct Stream
Direct Stream changes the container or arrangement of streams without necessarily re-encoding the video. It can help when the video itself is supported but the file packaging or another stream needs adjustment.

Transcoding
Transcoding converts media into a format the client can play. Unsupported video requires video transcoding; unsupported audio may need audio conversion. Jellyfin notes that subtitles can be remuxed or burned into the video, and subtitle burn-in is among the more intensive operations.
That conversion can be costly for the host. Jellyfin describes CPU video transcoding as demanding, and Plex says full transcoding can use CPU and temporary disk space. A server may therefore connect to the phone successfully yet struggle to play a file that requires conversion. Plex describes the server’s role as a “Universal Translator” in its Transcoding Media support article, last modified April 21, 2023.

Will Jellyfin work on my old Android phone?
It may, but the Android client listing alone does not confirm support for your phone’s OS version or its codecs. Jellyfin’s codec table is a useful starting point, not a guarantee for older devices. Check whether the app installs, then try a representative file and see whether it Direct Plays or requires conversion.
Can Plex transcode to an older iPhone?
Plex’s documentation explains that a server can transcode media for an incompatible playback device, but that does not establish that the current Plex app supports every older iPhone or iOS version. Confirm app availability for your exact handset and OS, then account for the server resources required if playback needs conversion. Plex’s published Downloads conditions apply to that feature specifically; they should not be generalized to all mobile playback.

Does my old phone support HEVC?
Do not assume it does based on a current app’s general codec table. Jellyfin marks HEVC support as conditional on device or settings, and its table describes recent client software and OS versions. Check the exact handset’s specifications and test a file with the relevant codec. If playback is incompatible, conversion may work only if the server can handle the required transcode.

A practical way to make the decision
- Write down the phone model and OS version, then confirm that the relevant Jellyfin, Plex, or Emby app is available for it.
- Choose one typical media file and identify its video codec, audio codec, container, and subtitle type.
- Test playback on the phone. If it Direct Plays, the phone can handle that file without server-side video conversion. If it does not, determine whether the server can transcode the incompatible part.
- If conversion is needed, consider the host’s CPU or supported acceleration and the added load from subtitle burn-in. Test the actual viewing setup, especially for remote playback.
- For downloads or other feature-specific needs, check that service’s current requirements rather than assuming they match ordinary playback.
