JEDEC’s Crossover Flash Memory (XFM) Embedded and Removable Memory Device, or XFMD, is a compact NAND-storage module designed to bridge soldered embedded flash and removable memory cards. It uses PCIe and NVMe, and its 14 × 18 × 1.4 mm form factor is intended for embedded products that need storage that can be exchanged more easily than soldered UFS or eMMC. It is not hot-swappable, and the 2021 coverage of the standard does not establish whether XFMD modules are available to buy in 2026.

What XFMD is—and what “changeable” means

XFMD is a JEDEC standard for a small NAND-storage module that sits between two familiar approaches: flash soldered directly onto a device’s circuit board, and larger removable formats such as SD cards or M.2 SSDs. JEDEC committee participant Bruno Trematore described the idea as a “crossover” between embedded memory and memory cards.

Unlike soldered UFS or eMMC, an XFMD module is intended to be exchangeable for servicing or storage replacement. “Semi-removable” does not mean it can be pulled out while the device is running: EE Times’ 2021 coverage explicitly noted that XFMD is not hot-swappable. The host must be designed to support the module.

Size, connection and protocol

Compact module

EE Times reported XFMD dimensions of 14 mm × 18 mm × 1.4 mm in 2021, citing Bruno Trematore of JEDEC’s JC-64 committee. That makes it smaller than a standard SD card but larger than a microSD card, with enough thickness to stack flash memory, according to the same coverage.

PCIe and NVMe

XFMD uses PCIe as its physical connection and NVMe as its storage protocol. The goal is for a host to interact with it much like an M.2 NVMe module, while using a smaller form factor suited to embedded devices. That shared interface family does not make XFMD mechanically interchangeable with an M.2 SSD; the module form factor and host implementation still matter.

How XFMD compares with other storage options

Option Replaceability Interface or protocol Size or performance figure established here Important distinction
XFMD Semi-removable; not hot-swappable, per EE Times’ 2021 coverage PCIe and NVMe, per the XFMD coverage 14 × 18 × 1.4 mm, reported by EE Times in 2021 Compact embedded module; current retail availability is not established by the 2021 coverage.
UFS or eMMC embedded storage Commonly soldered into the product, making replacement or upgrade difficult, per the XFMD coverage UFS uses an M-PHY-based stack; the cited XFMD coverage does not specify eMMC’s interface details. Not stated in the cited XFMD coverage. Embedded storage avoids a user-changeable module, but can be difficult to replace or upgrade.
UFS Card Removable card format UFS card standard JEDEC said UFS Card 3.0 had a maximum interface performance of 1.2 GB/s, up from 600 MB/s, in its 2020 release. A separate card standard, not XFMD; those performance figures are for UFS Card 3.0, not XFMD.
M.2 NVMe SSD Replaceable module PCIe and NVMe Physically larger than XFMD, per the XFMD coverage; exact dimensions and performance are not stated there. Similar host-side interface family, but a different physical format; it may consume more space and power.

These formats solve different design problems. XFMD’s compactness and serviceability may suit a product that cannot spare the space for an M.2 module but would benefit from replaceable flash. UFS and eMMC remain relevant where embedded storage is preferred. UFS Card is a removable card standard, not another name for XFMD.

Why use a changeable module?

Replacing storage can help manufacturers and service teams respond to capacity needs or flash wear over a device’s useful life. That may matter in long-lived automotive and IoT equipment, where replacing a board solely because its storage needs attention can be impractical. It also offers a possible way for device makers to provide expandable storage without relying on a conventional card slot.

Trade-offs and design constraints

Power and thermal budget

PCIe connectivity may draw more power than the MIPI M-PHY used by UFS. XFMD therefore is not automatically a better choice for every phone or other power-constrained mobile design. A designer has to weigh serviceability and module size against the host’s power and thermal limits.

Host support is required

A storage standard does not make every device compatible with it. The host needs a suitable connector and electrical design, plus firmware and system support for the storage device. An XFMD module should not be assumed to fit or work in an M.2 slot or a UFS Card reader simply because the formats share some concepts or interface terminology.

Adoption is separate from standardization

Kioxia’s memory division and MediaTek publicly endorsed the XFMD direction in statements included in the 2021 coverage. Kioxia described it as a potential option for semi-removable storage; MediaTek said platform developers and device makers could adopt it with minimal effort. Those endorsements are not proof that a given device supports XFMD or that modules reached retail.

Can you buy an XFMD module today?

The available dated coverage is from 2021 and said significant adoption was still needed before commercial XFMD products appeared. It does not establish current 2026 retail availability, so a buyer should not assume that modules can be purchased or that a particular computer, camera or vehicle supports them. Look for an explicit XFMD specification in the device documentation and confirmation from its manufacturer or a module supplier before planning a purchase or upgrade.
