St. Cloud Financial Credit Union (SCFCU) is pursuing a place for digital assets in credit-union infrastructure. Bitcoin Magazine’s October 6, 2026 interview page describes SCFCU as holding real Bitcoin for members in individual multisignature vaults under a patent-pending hybrid custody model, and reports more than 20 BTC under custody. Those are the publisher’s descriptions, not an independent audit or a full technical specification.
What is St. Cloud Financial Credit Union offering?
The clearest current account in the available sources comes from Bitcoin Magazine’s October 6, 2026 interview page. It describes member Bitcoin custody through individual multisignature vaults and calls the arrangement a patent-pending hybrid custody model. It reports more than 20 BTC under custody at publication; it does not provide an audited balance or a more precise measurement date.
That supports a qualified answer to “Is St. Cloud Financial Credit Union offering Bitcoin custody?”: the outlet describes it as doing so. The accessible description does not establish who can enroll, whether all members can use the service, how members buy or sell, or what fees or eligibility rules apply. It is therefore not enough to conclude that a particular reader can open a Bitcoin custody account today.
What does “Bitcoin on the core ledger” mean?
A credit union’s core system is its central platform for member accounts and financial records. A core-ledger entry could record a member’s claim or balance, while Bitcoin itself remains held separately in custody. A record of ownership or transactions in a core system is not the same thing as Bitcoin residing on-chain or being controlled by the core software.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The interview page’s title and chapter list raise the question of putting Bitcoin on a core ledger, but the accessible material does not explain the integration. It does not say whether the core records member positions, transactions, or both; how records reconcile with on-chain activity; or how settlement works. Those distinctions matter: an integration can make digital-asset balances part of member-facing infrastructure without making the core ledger a Bitcoin blockchain.
How is SCFCU’s digital-asset work developing?
| Date and source | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| August 27, 2024 — SCFCU | CEO Jed Meyer wrote about SCFCU’s partnership with DaLand LLC on its CU-Digital Asset Vault and described the work as a multi-year initiative. | A named partnership and Meyer’s account of the strategy at that time; not a complete description of the present custody system. |
| October 27, 2025 — America’s Credit Unions | The association said SCFCU was working to release a credit-union-issued stablecoin. It also said Meyer had served as president and CEO since 2014 and had led the credit union through more than 350 percent organic growth. | Historical statements as of the 2025 page. The growth figure’s measurement period and methodology are not stated, and the stablecoin’s release status in October 2026 is not established. |
| September 7, 2026 — CUbroadcast | Its episode description named SCFCU, Canvas Credit Union, and Blaze Credit Union as working with DaLand CUSO and Circuit on infrastructure to put digital wealth inside the core. | A described multi-credit-union initiative. The vendors’ specific roles and the implementation details are not stated. |
| October 6, 2026 — Bitcoin Magazine | The interview page described the hybrid custody model, individual member ownership in multisignature vaults, and more than 20 BTC under custody. | The publisher’s description and reported figure at publication, not an independent technical or financial verification. |
In a 2024 article, Meyer framed education, collaboration, and long-range planning as central to the work. He wrote: “A strong, comprehensive strategy—starting with the end in mind and working backward—is essential when partnering with fintech’s.” That is Meyer’s stated view in an advocacy piece, rather than an independent assessment of the model.

SCFCU also published a March 11, 2026 announcement about preparing credit unions for digital assets through member trust. The announcement is relevant to the institution’s positioning, but its title alone does not establish product availability or custody procedures.
What is known—and not known—about the custody model?
“Multisignature” generally means that moving Bitcoin requires approval from more than one key. But the source description does not identify the key holders, the required approval threshold, or how a member recovers access if a key is lost. It also does not explain the legal custody structure, insurance, transaction settlement, or reconciliation with member accounts. “Patent-pending” is reported by Bitcoin Magazine; no application number or patent filing details are provided on the accessible page.

For a member evaluating any such service, the practical questions include who controls each key, what approvals are required, how recovery works, how assets are legally held, and how transfers and balances are reflected in the member’s account. The accessible sources do not answer these operational questions for SCFCU.
How does direct Bitcoin custody differ from a Bitcoin ETF?
Direct custody means exposure to Bitcoin held in a custody arrangement for the member; an exchange-traded fund is a separate investment instrument whose shares provide exposure through a fund structure. They are not interchangeable custody models. Bitcoin Magazine’s chapter list signals that the interview discussed ETFs versus direct custody, but its accessible summary does not provide a full comparison of fees, risks, taxes, or legal treatment, or a recommendation.

For an institutional implementation, the useful comparison points are whether a member owns Bitcoin or another instrument, who controls the keys, what the core ledger records, how buying and selling settle, and how custody law and examinations apply. The interview page mentions topics including Minnesota custody law and NCUA examinations; a chapter label shows that a topic was discussed, not that a regulator approved the service or that a legal question is settled.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs SCFCU the first credit union to put Bitcoin on a core ledger?
Bitcoin Magazine’s page title calls SCFCU “the first,” but the cited material does not independently establish that superlative across credit unions, jurisdictions, or definitions of “on a core ledger.” The phrase is also technically ambiguous: it could refer to recording member positions in a core system rather than putting Bitcoin itself on-chain through that system. The careful conclusion is that SCFCU is described as pursuing this kind of integration, while its first-in-category status and the precise meaning of the core-ledger claim remain unverified in the available sources.

What should members take away?
SCFCU’s project is a notable example of a credit union exploring Bitcoin custody alongside broader digital-asset infrastructure. The reported model and balance come from Bitcoin Magazine’s interview summary, while earlier SCFCU and industry publications document a longer-running partnership and related plans. None of those descriptions substitutes for service terms, technical documentation, or an independent custody audit. The interview page also states that its material is informational only, not investment, legal, tax, or accounting advice.
