The JBL Bar 1300X is a complete, movie-focused 11.1.4-channel soundbar system: its package includes a wireless subwoofer and two battery-powered surround speakers that detach from the bar and can be placed behind the listener. RTINGS describes it as good for movies, citing extended low bass, clear dialogue and Dolby Atmos support, while noting limited traditional bass and treble adjustment. Whether it is worth buying depends on your room, connection needs, the exact price and whether you are considering this original model or the newer 1300XMK2.

What comes with the JBL Bar 1300X?

The Bar 1300X is sold as a system, not just a soundbar. JBL’s US specification sheet lists the main bar, two detachable surrounds, a wireless subwoofer, remote and batteries, power cords, one HDMI cable, wall-mount brackets and screws, side caps, quick-start guide, safety and warranty documents, and a wall-mount template. The number of power cords may vary by regional SKU.

JBL specifies 11.1.4 channels, a 12-inch (311 mm) subwoofer and maximum total speaker output of 1170 W at 1% THD. That wattage is a manufacturer specification, not an independent loudness measurement or a direct comparison with other systems. The main bar has six racetrack drivers, five tweeters and four up-firing drivers; each detachable surround has a racetrack driver, a tweeter, an up-firing driver and passive radiators. The package’s practical distinction is that the rear speakers are included and detachable. They connect to the bar for storage and charging, then can be placed behind the listening position without running speaker wire across the room. The subwoofer is wireless as well, although it still needs a power outlet.

How do the detachable rear speakers work, and how long does the battery last?

JBL specifies a 6600 mAh lithium battery in each detachable unit and up to 10 hours of playtime. “Up to” is not a guaranteed runtime: JBL says actual battery life varies with content and volume. The speakers recharge when attached to the bar, so the arrangement suits people who want rear-channel placement for movie sessions but prefer to return the units to the bar afterward.

Consider where the speakers will sit during playback and where they will recharge between sessions. If the best rear position lacks a convenient surface or the routine of detaching, placing and reattaching speakers feels cumbersome, fixed wired surrounds or a less elaborate soundbar may be a better fit. The included brackets support wall mounting; whether you need any additional hardware depends on your room.

How does the Bar 1300X sound for movies?

RTINGS rates the Bar 1300X as good for movies. Its review identifies extended low bass, Dolby Atmos support and truly wireless satellites as strengths. RTINGS also reports clear dialogue and says the subwoofer adds impact to action scenes. These are findings from that reviewer, not hands-on observations for this article. RTINGS JBL Bar 1300X review

The main adjustment trade-off RTINGS identifies is the lack of traditional bass and treble controls. If you routinely tune those ranges to suit your room, music or personal preference, check the available controls and JBL One app options before choosing this system. JBL advertises PureVoice dialogue enhancement and app-based controls, but those features do not amount to a conventional bass-and-treble adjustment according to RTINGS.

JBL also advertises Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, MultiBeam, up-firing drivers, Wi-Fi music services, AirPlay, Alexa Multi-Room Music and Chromecast built-in. Service and app availability can vary by region and may depend on third parties. Treat these as manufacturer-described features, rather than independent findings about how each service performs. Will the Bar 1300X work with your TV and sources?

Connection planning is important, particularly if you use several HDMI sources or need a specific gaming resolution and frame rate. The US specification sheet lists three HDMI video inputs, one HDMI eARC output, an optical input, HDCP 2.3, and HDR10 and Dolby Vision passthrough. JBL says the eARC connection carries uncompressed Dolby Atmos, and the three HDMI inputs support 4K video from compatible players or consoles. The included US package has one HDMI cable.

Connection or feature What JBL specifies What to check
TV audio One HDMI eARC output; optical input Confirm your TV has eARC if you want to use that route for uncompressed Dolby Atmos. Check your TV’s own audio-format support and settings.
HDMI sources Three HDMI video inputs; HDR10 and Dolby Vision passthrough Confirm the complete source-to-bar-to-display path supports the resolution, frame rate and format you need.
8K video RTINGS clarified on April 14, 2026, that the Bar 1300X cannot pass through an 8K signal Do not infer 8K support from the listed 4K passthrough specification.
USB playback The US/APAC versions support USB playback; other regional versions’ USB ports are service-only For the US version, the sheet lists MP3 playback. Check the specifications for your region and exact SKU.

For a console, streaming box or disc player, decide whether to connect it directly to the TV or to one of the bar’s HDMI inputs, then verify the formats supported at every point in that chain. A “4K passthrough” label alone does not establish compatibility with every high-bandwidth signal or refresh rate. RTINGS’ April 2026 clarification specifically rules out 8K passthrough.

JBL also lists Bluetooth 5.0 for the main bar, Bluetooth 5.2 for the detachable speakers, and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax. USB playback is regional: the US and APAC versions support it, while other regional versions may reserve the USB port for service. JBL US specification sheet

What do firmware updates mean for audio-format compatibility?

RTINGS’ findings on audio formats are time-sensitive. The reviewer says it retested audio formats on December 10, 2025, following a firmware update. Its September 23, 2024 update reported that Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus were still incorrectly implemented when the unit was tested with OneOS2.3, version 24.33.31.80.00. That is a dated test result; it does not establish that the same issue remains on the latest firmware.

JBL’s release-notes page lists firmware 25.52.31.80.00, dated January 12, 2026. JBL says that version fixed an issue where EQ reset after power cycling and added a security enhancement. The previous listed version, 25.29.31.80.00, dated July 31, 2025, added a security enhancement and software performance improvements. Earlier notes mention rear-speaker charging performance, calibration flow, Amazon HD Music support in JBL One, and HDMI eARC/ARC compatibility. The release notes do not say that the January 2026 update resolves RTINGS’ reported Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus issue.

Before buying, check JBL’s current instructions and release notes for your region, then confirm behavior with the formats and sources you actually use. A firmware note about eARC/ARC compatibility or performance improvements should not be taken as a promise that a particular TV, console or audio format will work as expected. How does the original Bar 1300X compare with the 1300XMK2?

The Bar 1300XMK2 is a successor, not another name for the original Bar 1300X. RTINGS describes the MK2 as having similar sound profiles but improved dynamics, surround and Atmos performance. If you are comparing listings or reviews, make sure the model name and generation match; a price or performance claim for the MK2 does not automatically apply to the original.

JBL BAR1300BLKAM-Z 11.1.4 ch Dolby Atmos DTS:X MultiBeam Soundbar System - Certified (Renewed)
  • 1,570 Watt Max Output Power
  • 12 in. Wireless Subwoofer
  • True Dolby Atmos And DTS:X

RTINGS also compares the original 1300X with the Bar 1000MK2. It notes that the 1300X has two extra channels and does not share the same Atmos latency issue, while the 1000MK2 has more balanced surround tuning, stronger dynamics and output, and a more present Atmos effect. That comparison is a reminder that channel count alone does not settle which system suits a room: surround tuning, height effects, placement and price matter too. Who should buy the JBL Bar 1300X?

The original Bar 1300X is most compelling for someone seeking a packaged movie system with a substantial subwoofer and rear speakers that do not need long speaker-wire runs. RTINGS’ reported strengths—low bass, dialogue clarity, Atmos support and wireless satellites—align with that use. Its case is weaker if you need 8K passthrough, rely on detailed bass and treble adjustment, or do not want the extra placement and charging routine of detachable speakers.

Before choosing one, compare the exact original-model price with the 1300XMK2 and other options available in your market; current street price and stock are not established here. Check the TV’s ports, source passthrough requirements, regional USB behavior and current firmware information. For the original model, the 11.1.4 specification and detachable surrounds describe the package, but they do not substitute for confirming your room and connection needs.
