JavaScript is a programming language; jQuery is a library written in JavaScript. JavaScript provides the language and, in browsers, works with built-in Web APIs such as the DOM. jQuery adds a compact set of APIs for common browser tasks, including selecting and changing page elements, handling events, animation, and Ajax. They are not alternatives: jQuery code is JavaScript, and JavaScript does not require jQuery.
How JavaScript and jQuery differ

JavaScript is broader than browser scripting: it can run in non-browser environments too. jQuery is specifically a library for common browser work. As the jQuery API documentation puts it, “jQuery is a fast, small, and feature-rich JavaScript library.” That is the library’s own description, not a comparative performance finding.
What the code looks like
Both native browser APIs and jQuery can respond to a click and reveal an element. With native APIs:

});The examples show different API styles for a similar task; they do not establish a universal line-count or speed advantage. Native DOM methods are part of the browser environment. jQuery’s selection and event methods provide its own collection-oriented way to perform common operations.

Ajax and browser compatibility
jQuery’s $.ajax() and helpers such as $.getJSON() can simplify request code and abstract some browser differences. They do not bypass browser security rules: cross-origin requests remain subject to the same-origin policy, and access across origins requires an appropriate CORS response. The jQuery Learning Center’s Ajax guide, last updated August 10, 2026, explains these constraints.
The jQuery browser-support policy lists desktop Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Opera, along with mobile Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS. Its support windows are relative to each browser’s current release, not a fixed list of version numbers. The policy also cautions that application code may still encounter browser-specific behavior, so test the whole application against the browsers and versions your users need.

Which should you learn first?
If you are beginning web development, learn JavaScript fundamentals first, then practice browser DOM APIs. That foundation makes it easier to understand what a library does and to work in projects that do not use jQuery. Learn jQuery when you encounter it in an existing codebase or have a concrete reason to use its APIs.
Should a new project use jQuery?
Choose according to the project, rather than treating either option as universally better. If the project needs only basic DOM behavior, native browser APIs may meet the need without adding a jQuery dependency. If a team already maintains a jQuery codebase, continuing to use its established APIs may be practical. The right choice depends on the required browser range, dependencies, and the work the application needs to do.

Do not assume that JavaScript is always faster, that jQuery is obsolete, or that jQuery guarantees compatibility. The cited official documentation does not provide a controlled head-to-head performance benchmark.

Before recommending an upgrade or removal, identify the deployed jQuery version, the code that depends on it, and the browsers the application must support. The browser-support policy says only the current jQuery version is tested; it also identifies jQuery Migrate as a possible aid when upgrading. Check the policy and test the application before changing versions or removing the library.
