A reliable JavaScript test suite is built around the behavior and risks that matter—not a target test count or coverage percentage. Start with the main user journeys and load-bearing code, use fast isolated tests for quick feedback, add integration tests to catch mismatches between parts, and reserve browser end-to-end tests for critical flows. Keep tests independent, verify user-visible behavior, and use CI failures as diagnostic signals rather than reasons to weaken assertions.

What should you test?

Begin with the consequences of a defect, not with whichever functions are easiest to cover. List the main jobs users need to complete, identify behavior that would cause substantial harm or disruption if it broke, and include recently changed or poorly understood code. Google web.dev cautions that many small tests and extensive unit coverage do not automatically reduce overall project risk. A small helper can be well tested while an important user journey remains unprotected.

Prioritize by user impact and uncertainty

  • Core journeys: Verify that users can complete the product’s most important tasks, including meaningful failure or recovery states.
  • Load-bearing logic: Test rules that affect many features, such as permission checks, pricing decisions, or data transformations.
  • High-risk changes: Add focused coverage around changed behavior, especially where the code is difficult to understand or regressions would be costly.
  • Boundaries and integrations: Check assumptions where your code meets a database, service, browser API, or another component.

Give each test a clear question to answer. A broad scenario that attempts to “test everything” is harder to understand when it fails and often leaves the exact broken behavior ambiguous. Google’s guidance recommends choosing priorities to fit the codebase and team goals: What to test and your approach.

How should unit, integration, and end-to-end tests fit together?

The test pyramid is a useful planning model: many quick, isolated checks at the base; integration or component-interaction tests in the middle; and a smaller number of end-to-end tests around critical flows. It is not a required ratio or percentage recipe. The UK Home Office’s engineering guidance says the mix should adapt to system complexity, risk, time, and resources, and identifies circumstances such as complex integrations, AI, safety-critical systems, rapid prototypes, or limited automation where exceptions may be appropriate. See its Test pyramid guidance.

Level Good fit Trade-off Example question
Unit or isolated test A small function or rule that can be exercised without its surrounding system Fast feedback, but may not reveal a mismatch between components or a broken user journey Does this discount rule calculate the expected total at its boundary values?
Integration or component interaction Behavior that depends on two or more parts working together More realistic than an isolated check, with additional setup and dependencies to control Does the form submit the expected data to the application layer and display the returned validation error?
End-to-end browser test A critical user flow that needs verification in a real browser context Exercises more of the system, but is slower and more involved to maintain and diagnose Can a signed-in user complete the primary purchase flow and see its confirmation?

Think of these levels as different scopes, not competing labels. A feature that crosses component, integration, and user-flow boundaries may deserve checks at more than one level. Smoke tests and visual checks are techniques or goals that can be applied at different scopes; they do not form extra mandatory layers. Choose each test for the evidence it adds and the cost of maintaining it.

How do you make browser tests resilient?

Test what a user can observe and do, rather than private implementation details such as function names, CSS classes, or a page’s incidental structure. Playwright’s best-practices guidance recommends user-facing locators and explicit contracts. Its locators auto-wait for actionability, and its web-first assertions retry until the expected browser state appears; these behaviors help avoid checks that run once before the interface has settled.

Prefer user-facing locators and retrying assertions

Use accessible roles, labels, or other locators tied to an explicit user-facing contract where possible. Then assert the state that matters to the user with Playwright’s retrying assertions, rather than checking a value immediately after an action and assuming the page has already updated. Avoid using a CSS class as the primary signal that a feature works: styling changes can break that test without changing the user-visible behavior.

Consult the current Playwright Best Practices documentation for locator and assertion details. The precise test code depends on your application and chosen framework; the central rule is to express the interaction and expected visible result, not a guess about internal timing.

Keep each test independent

Give tests their own data and state. Do not rely on a prior test to sign in, seed a record, or clean up after itself. Control database fixtures or staging data so a run is repeatable, and stub or fulfill requests to third-party systems when their availability or responses are outside your control. For visual regression comparisons, keep the operating system and browser versions fixed so environmental changes do not masquerade as product changes.

Which JavaScript testing framework should you use?

Choose tools by fit with the project, not by a universal ranking. Vitest and Jest both publish getting-started documentation, Playwright documents browser testing, and Testing Library publishes principles for interface testing. Those resources establish them as documented options, not a single winner for every stack.

How should you run tests in CI and diagnose failures?

Run automated tests frequently, ideally with commits or pull requests, so failures appear close to the change that introduced them. For browser-test failures, Playwright’s trace viewer can help inspect the test timeline, DOM snapshots, and network activity. Playwright describes configuring traces on the first retry in CI; tracing every test can add substantial performance overhead. See its Trace Viewer guide.

Keep browser projects aligned with the environments your application supports, and update Playwright when current browser behavior matters to your coverage. A failing test should first prompt investigation: check its trace and state setup, then determine whether the product behavior or the test expectation is wrong. Do not routinely weaken assertions just to make CI green.

How do you reduce flaky tests and measure suite health?

Address the causes of flakiness

  • Timing assumptions: Replace fixed guesses about when the interface is ready with locator actions and retrying assertions that wait for the expected state.
  • Shared or stale state: Make each test establish its own data, login state, and cleanup path.
  • Uncontrolled services: Control test data and stub external requests when a third party is not part of the behavior under test.
  • Changing visual environment: Fix operating system and browser versions for visual regression comparisons.
  • Weak diagnosis: Preserve browser traces for CI retries so failures can be examined rather than dismissed as intermittent.

Use metrics to find bottlenecks, not to chase a target

The Home Office guidance lists defect density, test execution time, the percentage of unreliable tests, defect leakage across test levels, and automation coverage as metrics a team can capture. Use their trends to investigate slow feedback, flaky checks, gaps, or defects escaping earlier levels. The guidance does not establish universal acceptable values; interpret results against your release risks and workflow. Neither test count, coverage, nor a prescribed pyramid ratio is a substitute for deciding whether critical behavior is actually protected.
