If a click does nothing, first check how the handler is connected: an inline onclick attribute and a JavaScript addEventListener() listener use different setup. Then verify the function exists, the target element was available when the listener was attached, and the browser console is not reporting a syntax error or Content Security Policy (CSP) block. Without your code and console output, there is no single cause to identify.
Is the handler inline or registered in JavaScript?
These are two different approaches. Make sure your code uses the syntax that matches the one you chose.
Inline HTML handler
An inline handler puts the function call in the markup:
<button onclick="saveItem()">Save</button>
Check that saveItem is spelled correctly and available where the browser can resolve it. An inline attribute contains handler code; it does not create a function with that name for you. MDN recommends registering listeners in JavaScript rather than mixing behavior into HTML. See MDN’s introduction to events.

JavaScript listener
With addEventListener(), pass the function itself as the second argument:
button.addEventListener("click", saveItem);
Do not call it during registration as saveItem(); that runs the function immediately instead of passing it as the click handler. The element must also be found before this line runs. See MDN’s addEventListener() reference.

Could Content Security Policy be blocking inline onclick?
A site’s CSP can disallow inline event-handler attributes. MDN explains that the script-src directive specifies valid sources for JavaScript and applies to inline handlers. If the console reports a CSP violation, that is a strong clue that an inline onclick was blocked. MDN’s recommended alternative is to remove the attribute and register the handler with addEventListener(): Content-Security-Policy: script-src directive.
Do not weaken the site’s policy as a first fix. Move the behavior into JavaScript and register a listener instead.

Did the script run before the element existed?
A lookup such as document.querySelector("#save") cannot attach a listener to the intended button if that button has not yet been parsed or created. Check that the lookup returns the element before calling addEventListener().
For a simple page, placing the script after the target markup may be sufficient. If initialization should wait until the document is parsed, use an appropriate loading strategy or initialize after DOMContentLoaded. That event fires after HTML parsing and after deferred and module scripts execute. See MDN’s DOMContentLoaded reference.

Was the clicked element present when the listener was attached?
Directly attaching a listener works for an element that exists at initialization. If your application adds the button later, code that ran earlier will not have attached a listener to that new element. Register the listener after the element is created, or use an event-delegation approach suited to your page. The right choice depends on how the elements are created and managed.

Open the browser’s developer tools, click the button, and inspect the console for errors. Look for a syntax error that stopped the script, a missing function name, a failed element lookup, or a CSP violation. Also confirm that the intended element—not a covering or different element—is receiving the click.

- If the console identifies a script error, fix that error first; later setup code may not have run.
- If the selected element is missing, check the selector and when the script executes.
- If CSP reports a blocked inline handler, replace the inline attribute with a JavaScript listener.
- If there is no clear error, share the smallest reproducible HTML and JavaScript example along with the exact console message; those details are needed to distinguish syntax, scope, timing, policy, and selection problems.
