JavaScript garbage collection reclaims objects that are no longer reachable from the runtime’s roots, but it cannot tell whether your application still needs every object it can reach. A memory leak usually means something—such as a listener, cache, timer, or long-lived variable—still points to objects the application no longer needs. To investigate, reproduce the suspected behavior, compare heap snapshots, and follow the retaining references.
How JavaScript memory management and garbage collection work
JavaScript creates objects as code runs. The runtime manages their memory automatically; developers generally do not manually allocate and free JavaScript objects. Garbage collection is the process of reclaiming memory used by objects the engine determines are no longer needed. That determination is necessarily an approximation: engines use reachability as a practical way to decide what remains in use. See MDN’s JavaScript memory-management guide.
Reachability, roots, and mark-and-sweep
Modern JavaScript engines use mark-and-sweep collection. Starting from roots—runtime references that remain accessible to the program—the collector traces references to other objects. Objects it can reach are retained; objects it cannot reach can be reclaimed.
Two objects that reference each other can still be collected if nothing reachable points to that cycle. As MDN puts it, “The immediate benefit of this approach is that cycles are no longer a problem.” A cycle is not collectible, however, if a reachable object still points into it.

What counts as a memory leak
A leak in managed JavaScript is commonly an object that remains reachable even though the application no longer needs it. The useful debugging question is not merely “Why is the heap large?” but “What is retaining this object?” A higher heap reading during a workload can reflect temporary allocations or normal runtime behavior; by itself, it does not establish a leak.
How to find a memory leak with heap snapshots in Chrome
Chrome DevTools heap snapshots show reachable JavaScript objects and related DOM nodes. Snapshot capture starts with garbage collection, so the result is a view of reachable objects at that point—not a measure of every kind of memory consumed by the browser process. Chrome documents the workflow and snapshot views in its heap snapshots guide.

- Reproduce the suspected lifecycle. Pick one repeatable action, such as opening and closing a view or mounting and unmounting a component, and perform it consistently.
- Capture a baseline. Open Chrome DevTools, select the Memory panel, choose Heap snapshot, and capture a snapshot before repeating the action.
- Repeat the workload and capture again. Keep the number and sequence of interactions consistent, then take a second snapshot.
- Compare growth. Use Comparison to inspect object-count and memory differences between snapshots. In Summary, identify constructors or object groups that grew.
- Trace the retaining reference. Select a suspicious object and inspect Retainers to see what points to it and the path that keeps it reachable. Fix the owner or lifecycle cleanup, then repeat the same workload and compare again.
A positive difference is a lead, not a verdict: investigate whether the growing objects are retained beyond their useful lifetime. For suspected DOM leaks, look for detached nodes. If an object appears to be held unexpectedly, check whether a value evaluated in the DevTools console is keeping it alive; Chrome’s Summary view includes filters for detached nodes and objects retained by the console.
What the snapshot views tell you
- Summary: Groups allocations by constructor or object group so you can locate growth.
- Comparison: Shows differences between snapshots, helping identify changes in object counts and memory.
- Containment: Helps inspect an object’s structure and the objects it contains.
- Retainers: Shows objects that point to the selected object, helping reveal why it remains reachable.
How to take a heap snapshot in Node.js
For Node.js, compare snapshots around a repeatable workload after the process has finished loading modules and bootstrapping. The Node.js Learn guide explains the process and its operational risks: Using Heap Snapshot.

- Let startup finish. Begin after the server or script has loaded its modules and completed bootstrapping, so startup allocations do not dominate the comparison.
- Exercise the suspect behavior consistently. Repeat the same requests or operations, avoiding unrelated activity where possible.
- Capture a baseline snapshot. Record the heap before the workload or at a defined point in its repeatable cycle.
- Continue the workload and capture another snapshot. Compare the snapshots, investigate positive deltas, and follow references to learn what retains the growing objects.
Node.js heap snapshots have an important availability cost: capture stops main-thread work, and building the snapshot in memory may double heap use. On a constrained process, that can cause a crash. Treat production capture as an operational risk and use it only where a process interruption or crash will not compromise application availability.
Browser and Node.js snapshot investigations compared
| Investigation factor | Browser | Node.js |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime being profiled | The browser page’s reachable JavaScript objects and related DOM nodes, viewed in Chrome DevTools. | The Node.js process being investigated. |
| Snapshot workflow | Chrome DevTools Memory panel; Summary, Comparison, Containment, and Retainers views. | Capture snapshots around a repeatable workload and compare object growth and references; see the Node.js Learn guide. |
| Useful workload | A repeatable interaction or component lifecycle, such as opening and closing a view. | A repeatable request or operation after startup and bootstrapping finish. |
| What growth means | A snapshot shows reachable objects. Deltas help locate growth, but retained references must be inspected to distinguish a leak from expected objects. | Positive deltas are leads to investigate; trace references to determine what keeps objects reachable. |
| Operational cost | Snapshot capture starts with garbage collection; interpret the result as reachable objects, not all browser-process memory. | Capture stops main-thread work and may double heap use while building the snapshot, risking a crash in a constrained process. |
Best practices for preventing leaks and managing resources
Match object lifetimes to feature lifetimes
When a feature or request is finished, remove its objects from long-lived structures if they are no longer needed. A cache, module-level variable, or application-wide collection can keep an otherwise obsolete object reachable. The goal is not to free JavaScript memory manually; it is to end unnecessary references so the runtime can collect the objects.

Use weak collections only when their semantics fit
A WeakMap or WeakSet can associate metadata with an object without independently keeping its key alive. Weak collections are non-iterable by design, so they are appropriate only when that limitation and weak-key behavior fit the design. They are not a general-purpose fix for memory leaks.
Clean up listeners, timers, and external resources
Garbage collection and resource cleanup are related but distinct responsibilities. Remove event listeners, clear timers, and end subscriptions according to the APIs that created them. Explicitly close file handles and network connections, and release stream-reader locks where applicable. MDN’s JavaScript resource-management guide covers this separate lifecycle concern.

Do not rely on FinalizationRegistry for critical cleanup: its callback is not guaranteed to run. It is not a substitute for explicitly releasing a resource when its owner is done.
Quick Recap
Common memory-leak debugging mistakes
- Treating a large heap as proof of a leak: A single size reading does not identify retained objects or explain why they remain reachable.
- Looking only at allocation growth: Compare snapshots and inspect retainers; temporary allocations are not necessarily leaks.
- Assuming cycles cannot be collected: Unreachable cycles are collectible under mark-and-sweep; a reachable reference into the cycle changes the result.
- Trying to force garbage collection in application code: JavaScript has no standard API for triggering collection. Engine-specific debugging options may exist, but they are not a routine application fix.
- Increasing the Node.js heap limit before finding the cause: A larger limit adds headroom but does not remove the reference retaining unwanted objects.
- Using finalizers as deterministic cleanup: FinalizationRegistry callbacks are not guaranteed to run; close resources through their owning APIs.
