If an onclick handler says a JavaScript function is undefined, the handler cannot resolve the function name where it runs, or the code that should define it did not execute. Check the browser console’s first error, compare the names carefully, and verify the function’s scope and script type. In most modern pages, wiring the click with addEventListener is a more reliable fix than relying on an inline HTML attribute.

Why an onclick function can be undefined

An HTML attribute such as onclick="doThing()" is turned by the browser into an event handler. When the click happens, the name doThing still has to be available in the handler’s execution context. If it is misspelled, out of scope, or never defined because its script failed, the call cannot succeed. MDN explains how event-handler attributes work.

The function is outside the handler’s scope

A function declared inside another function is local to that enclosing function; an inline attribute cannot automatically see it. The same visibility issue can arise when a function is declared in a module. A top-level function declaration in a classic script becomes a property of globalThis, but a top-level module declaration does not. Modules also run in strict mode. Moving code into <script type="module"> can therefore break an inline handler that previously found a global function. MDN’s function guide covers scope, and its JavaScript modules guide describes module behavior.

The defining script did not run successfully

A syntax error or an earlier runtime exception can prevent the function from being created. A missing script file, incorrect script order, or missing module import/export can also leave the expected name unavailable.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The name or initialization timing is wrong

JavaScript identifiers are case-sensitive, so saveForm and saveform are different names. Function declarations are hoisted within their scope, but a function expression assigned to a variable is not available as a callable value before that assignment runs. MDN documents function declaration and expression behavior.

Debug the error in a useful order

  1. Reload and inspect the first console error. Fix an earlier syntax error or exception before investigating the later click failure.
  2. Compare the function names character by character. Check spelling, capitalization, and whether the handler calls the same name the code defines.
  3. Confirm the defining script loads and runs. In browser developer tools, check the Network panel for a failed script request and the Console for errors. If the definition is in another file, check script order; if it is in a module, check its imports and exports.
  4. Check where the function is declared. A function inside another function, a block, or a module may not be visible to an inline attribute expecting a global name. Keep the handler in the same module or closure, or deliberately expose a global only if legacy inline markup requires it.
  5. Check how and when the function is initialized. If it is assigned as a function expression, make sure that assignment happens before the click can invoke it.
  6. Read the exact error text. ReferenceError: someName is not defined means the name could not be resolved. If a value exists but is undefined, calling it may instead produce a TypeError such as “is not a function.” If the function begins running and then throws, inspect its body; the problem is not name visibility.

Prefer addEventListener for new code

Register the click callback in JavaScript instead of making HTML search for a global function name:

  document.querySelector("#save-button").addEventListener("click", save);

Here, both the function and the listener registration are in the same module, so save does not need to be exposed globally. MDN’s examples show named functions and callbacks passed to addEventListener.

MDN says, “The use of event handler content attributes is discouraged.” Inline handlers mix JavaScript into HTML, can make code harder to maintain, and may be blocked by a Content Security Policy. For a small legacy page, an inline attribute can be quick; for reusable, testable application code or a page that needs CSP support, explicit listener registration is generally a better fit. If a legacy page must retain onclick, ensure the named function is intentionally exposed where the handler can resolve it and that its script has run.

Distinguish a missing function from a function that fails

The phrase “function is undefined” is not enough to identify one cause. The exact console message and a minimal example containing the relevant HTML and JavaScript distinguish an unresolved identifier from an undefined value or an exception inside the function. Without those details, scope, naming, script execution, and initialization timing are diagnostic possibilities—not a confirmed diagnosis of a particular page.
