!!x converts x to a Boolean primitive based on JavaScript truthiness. It is useful when you need to store or return that Boolean value; if you only need to choose a branch, if (x) already does the job.
What does !! do in JavaScript?
!! is not a separate operator. It applies logical NOT twice. The first ! tests the operand’s truthiness and returns the opposite Boolean; the second reverses that Boolean. The result is therefore a Boolean primitive that reflects whether the original value was truthy.
MDN describes the conversion this way: “To explicitly convert its return value (or any expression in general) to the corresponding boolean value, use a double NOT operator (!!) or the Boolean constructor.” See MDN’s Logical NOT reference.
Which JavaScript values are truthy or falsy?
Falsy values are false, undefined, null, 0, -0, NaN, 0n, and the empty string (""). All other ordinary values are truthy, including empty arrays and empty objects. MDN also documents legacy document.all as an exceptional falsy object.

!!new Boolean(false); // true: this is an objectThe last expression is a common trap. new Boolean(false) creates a Boolean wrapper object, not the primitive false. Because objects are truthy, the wrapper itself converts to true. Prefer Boolean primitives and avoid constructing Boolean wrapper objects. When should you use !!x instead of Boolean(x) or if (x)?
!!x and Boolean(x) perform the same conversion. Choose between them based on which spelling is clearer in your codebase. Use either when a stored value, API, comparison, or return contract specifically needs a Boolean primitive.

}In the final example, the condition already branches on truthiness. Adding !! inside if would not change which branch runs and does not make the test more Boolean. Use the direct condition when you only need a branch decision.
Truthiness is also different from loose equality. For example, an empty array is truthy, yet [] == false evaluates to true under loose-equality coercion. Do not use comparisons with true or false as a substitute for understanding a value’s truthiness.

Is double negation a JavaScript error or a lint problem?
No. !! is valid JavaScript. ESLint’s no-extra-boolean-cast rule flags unnecessary Boolean conversions in Boolean contexts such as an if test. Its no-implicit-coercion rule can be configured to disallow coercion forms such as double negation.
These are configurable style checks, not language errors or proof that !! is always wrong. The practical distinction is whether the converted Boolean value is needed: use an explicit conversion when it is, and omit it when a truthiness test is enough.
