For a new JavaScript end-to-end suite that must cover Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, start by evaluating Playwright. Choose Puppeteer for Chrome-centered scripting when its documented Firefox support is enough; Selenium when WebDriver, remote Grid execution, or a multi-language ecosystem matters most; Cypress for its integrated application-testing and interactive-debugging workflow; and WebdriverIO for a configurable Node.js runner or standalone automation. The right choice depends on browser targets and how your team works—not on a proven speed ranking.
What “cross-browser” means for these frameworks
Browser support is not interchangeable: a framework may support an underlying engine, a branded browser, or a particular browser/package version combination. Check the exact browsers your users run and your CI environment needs before choosing.
| Framework | Documented browser coverage | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, plus branded Chrome and Edge; it also documents device emulation. | Playwright versions require corresponding browser binaries. Reinstall the browsers after upgrading Playwright, and verify the current browser documentation for the version you use. (Playwright browser and migration documentation, accessed 2026-10-03.) |
| Puppeteer | Chrome for Testing and Firefox are mapped to Puppeteer versions in its support documentation. | Firefox support began in Puppeteer v23; Chrome for Testing support began in v20. These are starting points, not a guarantee that every browser/package pairing works: check the mapping for your exact version. Playwright’s migration guide says Puppeteer does not support WebKit. (Puppeteer support and Playwright migration documentation, accessed 2026-10-03.) |
| Selenium WebDriver | Browser-specific capabilities are documented for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. | Capabilities and setup are browser-specific; do not interpret the list as identical behavior or support for every browser/version combination. (Selenium browser documentation, accessed 2026-10-03.) |
| Cypress | Firefox and Chrome-family browsers, including Edge. | Confirm that the particular browser and testing workflow you need are supported by the current Cypress documentation. (Cypress documentation, accessed 2026-10-03.) |
| WebdriverIO | Its getting-started documentation describes a Node.js runner and standalone automation mode. | The cited getting-started material is for WebdriverIO v9.x. Confirm the current browser and service integrations relevant to your setup. (WebdriverIO documentation, accessed 2026-10-03.) |
These are the documented capabilities in the official pages reviewed as of 2026-10-03; browser support and version mappings can change.
How the five frameworks differ
Playwright: an integrated cross-browser test stack
Playwright combines browser automation with Playwright Test, its first-party test runner. The runner provides fixtures, parallel execution, isolated test contexts, and test artifacts. Its documented tooling also includes Inspector, code generation, and tracing. That combination makes it a strong first evaluation for a new end-to-end suite spanning Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit—not just a library for issuing browser commands.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The operational detail to plan for is browser installation: Playwright expects browser binaries matched to its version. In CI, make installation of the required browsers part of environment setup, and repeat it when you upgrade Playwright.
Puppeteer: Chrome-centered scripting, with versioned Firefox support
Puppeteer is a natural candidate when the main job is JavaScript automation around Chrome or Chrome for Testing. Its current support documentation also maps Firefox to Puppeteer versions, so describing it as Chrome-only is outdated. The mapping is version-specific, however, and Puppeteer is not the choice when WebKit coverage is required.
Unlike simply selecting an automation library, adopting a test stack also means deciding which runner and test-management conventions to use. Playwright’s migration guide recommends Playwright Test when moving from Puppeteer and describes the runner features noted above.

Selenium WebDriver: the WebDriver model and remote execution
Selenium is an umbrella project for tools and libraries that automate web browsers, as the Selenium project documentation puts it. Its JavaScript binding supports WebDriver-style configuration through Builder, Selenium Manager for browser-driver setup, and remote server/Grid use. Selenium Grid is designed to run tests across different machines and platforms, which is useful when execution needs to be distributed beyond one local browser process.
The current Selenium JavaScript binding documentation specifies Node.js 22 or newer. Treat that as a prerequisite for the documented current binding, not a universal requirement for all historical Selenium releases. If your team depends on another language binding or a remote Grid, include those integration and operations needs in the decision.
Cypress: application testing with an interactive debugging workflow
Cypress emphasizes end-to-end and component testing alongside a local interactive runner. Its documented features include time-travel snapshots, automatic waiting, and network control, which can make it attractive when developers want to inspect and debug test behavior in the application-testing workflow. Its browser documentation covers Firefox and Chrome-family testing, including Edge.

Cypress App is described as free and open source; Cypress Cloud is a separate paid service for test recording, results, analytics, and orchestration. Distinguish the local application from the commercial cloud service when evaluating cost or deciding what your team needs.
WebdriverIO: configurable runner or standalone Node.js automation
WebdriverIO offers a setup wizard for its runner and can also be used in standalone automation scripts. Its getting-started documentation for v9.x lists Node.js 18.20.0 or later and describes setup options for npm, Yarn, pnpm, and bun. The docs also describe recording actions through Chrome DevTools Recorder.

For a screenshot-only job—such as generating a page image or PDF rather than exercising a user journey—consider a screenshot API instead of maintaining browser setup and test code. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is a complementary alternative to try first for captures, not a substitute for a browser test framework. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. The next section shows the direct call.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off or repeatable website capture, call the ScreenshotNeo API rather than writing browser automation around a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the full options and response behavior.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your API key and change the target URL. ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

How to make a useful proof of concept
Documentation narrows the candidates, but project-specific behavior should decide the final choice. Build a small representative evaluation against the application and CI environment you actually use; this is a recommended evaluation method, not a published comparative benchmark.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Write down required browsers. Specify engines and branded browsers explicitly—for example, WebKit versus Safari, or Chromium versus Chrome and Edge. Remove any candidate that cannot meet a mandatory target.
- Exercise the risky application paths. Include your real authentication flow, frames, and file downloads rather than relying only on a simple public page.
- Use the intended CI environment. Run on the operating system and browser versions you plan to support. For Playwright, include the version-matched browser installation in the test setup.
- Try expected concurrency and debugging. Check the parallelism you need and how easily developers can diagnose failures using the framework’s normal tools.
- Compare maintenance and deployment fit. Include Node.js prerequisites, browser/driver setup, remote execution needs, and any runner or cloud service your team plans to adopt.
Performance, reliability, and cost: what can be concluded
There is no established speed winner here
The official pages reviewed do not provide an apples-to-apples benchmark of current framework releases under one common workload. A claim that one of these tools is universally fastest would not be supported. If runtime matters, measure the same representative test workload on the same hardware, browser versions, CI operating system, and concurrency settings.
Reliability depends on the environment as well as the framework
Browser binaries, drivers, browser versions, operating systems, network conditions, and application behavior all affect whether a run succeeds. Follow the setup documented for the framework and pin or otherwise manage the versions your team intends to test. Selenium’s automatic browser-driver setup through Selenium Manager is documented for its JavaScript binding; Playwright’s browser binaries must match the Playwright version.
Distinguish software from optional services
The comparison does not establish comparable licensing or total operating costs for all five frameworks. The specific commercial distinction documented here is Cypress: the local Cypress App is free and open source, while Cypress Cloud is paid. Selenium Grid, browser infrastructure, CI execution, and team maintenance can also be part of a real deployment decision, but the reviewed sources do not establish a common price comparison for them.
Quick Recap
Common selection mistakes
- Assuming all “cross-browser” labels mean the same thing. Verify engine, branded-browser, and version coverage against the required target list.
- Assuming Puppeteer is Chrome-only—or that it supports WebKit. The current docs include mapped Firefox support beginning with v23, but the Playwright migration guide says Puppeteer does not support WebKit.
- Upgrading Playwright without refreshing browsers. Its browser binaries are version-specific; rerun the browser installation step after upgrading.
- Confusing Cypress App with Cypress Cloud. The local app and paid cloud offering are separate parts of the product.
- Choosing on a generalized speed claim. The reviewed official material has no common benchmark; use a controlled project-specific comparison if speed is decisive.
