Java and JavaScript are separate programming languages, not two names for the same thing. JavaScript’s core language is standardized as ECMAScript; Java has its own language specification. Their names and some syntax resemble one another, but their semantics, environments and ecosystems differ.

What is the difference between Java and JavaScript?

The key distinction is that each language has its own rules and standard. JavaScript is not a Java dialect, subset or renamed version. MDN’s JavaScript reference puts it plainly: JavaScript is not “Interpreted Java.”

Aspect JavaScript Java
Language standard The core language is standardized as ECMAScript, in the ECMA-262 specification. ECMAScript 5.1 specification Defined separately by the Java Language Specification. Java Language Specification, Java SE 21
Where it runs Runs in browsers and non-browser environments such as Node.js. Browser features such as the DOM are host APIs, not part of ECMAScript itself. MDN JavaScript reference Runs in Java implementations and its own platform and runtime ecosystem. The language specification is maintained separately from ECMAScript. Java Language Specification, Java SE 21
Relationship Some syntax resembles Java, but the languages have different syntax, semantics and uses. MDN JavaScript reference A distinct language; JavaScript is not a form of Java. MDN JavaScript reference

What are JavaScript and ECMAScript?

JavaScript is the familiar name for the language developers use. ECMAScript is the name of its standardized core: the specification describes language features and behavior so implementations can follow a common standard. The formal standard is ECMA-262. ECMAScript 5.1 specification MDN JavaScript reference

When JavaScript runs in a browser, the environment supplies additional capabilities. For example, the DOM lets code work with a web page’s structure. Those browser APIs are not the ECMAScript language itself. JavaScript also runs outside browsers; Node.js is one such environment. MDN JavaScript reference

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why do the names sound alike?

The names are similar, and ECMAScript syntax intentionally resembles Java syntax. Java is also listed among the influences on ECMAScript’s original design. Those points help explain why the languages can look familiar at a glance, but they do not make JavaScript a version of Java or establish that the two share the same semantics. ECMAScript 5.1 specification

The sources cited here establish the naming and syntax resemblance, but not a detailed account of the decision to call the language JavaScript. A more specific story about the naming would need separate historical documentation.

How did the languages begin?

JavaScript and ECMAScript

The ECMAScript 5.1 specification credits Brendan Eich at Netscape with inventing JavaScript and says it first appeared in Navigator 2.0. The standardization process began in 1996; Ecma International records that its General Assembly approved the first ECMAScript standard in June 1997, with final naming work continuing that September. Java

Java was originally called Oak and was designed by James Gosling for embedded consumer-electronic applications, according to the preface to the Java Language Specification. Java Language Specification, Java SE 21, Chapter 1

How should you compare them when choosing a language?

Start with the application and the environment where it must run, then check the language’s actual rules and available APIs. A shared-looking keyword or familiar punctuation is not enough to predict how a program behaves.
