If you are looking for the “latest Java JRE,” Oracle’s current download page requires an important distinction: Oracle does not provide a standalone JRE 26, JRE 25, or JRE 21. The current Java SE feature release is JDK 26.0.2, and the latest long-term-support release is JDK 25.0.4. A JDK includes the Java runtime and is the correct download for most current Windows applications and development tools.
Oracle’s latest standalone JRE listing is Java SE Runtime Environment 8u501. Use that package only when an older application specifically requires Java 8 or a 32-bit Java runtime.
Which Java download should you choose?

Download Oracle packages from the Java SE Downloads page. Do not install a 32-bit JRE merely because Windows is 64-bit; use it only when the application itself requires 32-bit Java.
Java JRE latest version: what Oracle currently offers
JDK 26.0.2
JDK 26.0.2 is Oracle’s latest Java SE feature release. On Windows, Oracle provides these x64 files:

- jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.exe — standard executable installer
- jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.msi — Windows Installer package, useful for managed or enterprise deployments
- jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.zip — compressed archive for a manual or portable installation
There is no Oracle x86 or 32-bit JDK 26 Windows installer. JDK 25.0.4 and JDK 21.0.12 likewise have Windows x64 packages, not 32-bit packages.
Standalone JRE 8u501
Oracle’s current standalone JRE downloads are legacy Java 8 packages:

The terms x86 and i586 identify the 32-bit JRE package. The x64 name identifies the 64-bit package.
Install JDK 26 on Windows
Using the .exe installer
- Open Oracle’s Java SE Downloads page and download jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.exe.
- Open the folder containing the downloaded file.
- Double-click the installer.
- Follow the instructions displayed by the installer.
- Allow the installer to run with administrator privileges when Windows requests approval.
Oracle does not prescribe a fixed sequence of button labels for the current executable wizard, so the available screens can vary by installer build. You can delete the downloaded installer after installation finishes.
Using the .msi installer
- Download jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.msi.
- Double-click the MSI file.
- Allow the Windows Installer to run with administrator permissions.
- Follow the minimal prompts shown by the MSI installer.
For an ordinary installation, the executable installer is usually simpler. The MSI is useful when Java is deployed through Windows administration tools or scripts.
Install silently from Command Prompt
Open an MS-DOS Command Prompt with administrative permissions, change to the directory containing the installer, and run one of these commands.

For a normal MSI installation with its interface:
msiexec.exe /i jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.msi
For a silent MSI installation:
msiexec.exe jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.msi /qn
To create an installation log:
msiexec.exe /i installer.msi /L C:\path\setup.log
After the logged installation completes, scroll to the end of C:\path\setup.log to check the result.

Oracle states that ADDLOCAL is not required because all components are installed by default.
Install the standalone JRE 8
Use JRE 8u501 only when an older program requires it. Select the 64-bit installer, jre-8u501-windows-x64.exe, for a normal 64-bit Java 8 application. Select jre-8u501-windows-i586.exe when the application is 32-bit and cannot use a 64-bit Java runtime.
- Download the appropriate JRE 8u501 installer from Oracle.
- Double-click the downloaded .exe file.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Follow the installation instructions.
- Test the version from Command Prompt after installation.
On current JRE 8 installations, a 32-bit JRE normally uses a path under C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jreN. A 64-bit JRE uses C:\Program Files\Java\jreN. For example, JRE 8u421 uses a directory named jre1.8.0_421. Check the exact directory for 8u501 on the installed system rather than assuming it.
Verify Java after installation
Open Command Prompt and run:
java -version
The command reports the Java runtime selected by Windows. A current JDK installation also places Java executables in:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath\java.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath\javaw.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath\javac.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath\jshell.exe
The same executables are available in the installed JDK’s bin directory. If java -version reports an unexpected release, Windows is finding a different Java location earlier in its path. Run:
where java
This shows which java.exe Windows is executing.
Default JDK 26 installation folder
The standard JDK 26 directory is:
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-26
For an update release, Oracle may use the full version in the directory name, such as:
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-26.0.1
Oracle also creates a junction under:
C:\Program Files\Java\latest\jdk-26
Do not replace, rename, or overwrite a JDK directory while Java programs or services are running. Stop those processes first.

Common installation problems
Administrator permission is required
Installing JDK 26 on Windows requires administrator privileges. If the installer fails with an access-denied message, right-click the installer and select Run as administrator, or use an administrator Command Prompt for the command-line installation.
Error 1722
Error 1722 can occur when the installation directory contains characters that are not supported by the system locale’s code page. Ensure that the user and system locales match and that the installation path contains only characters supported by that locale. Installing into the default Oracle path is a practical way to avoid unusual path characters.

JDK 26 is installed, but Java 8 is reported
If you install JDK 26 first and JRE 8 afterward, java -version can report 1.8.0. Oracle identifies this as a JRE 8 installer bug: the JRE installer can place its javapath ahead of the JDK 26 location in the user environment path.
Oracle’s documented fix is to uninstall and reinstall JDK 26. You can also use where java to confirm which executable is being selected, but changing paths manually may affect applications that depend on Java 8.

Several old Java 8 deployment instructions are no longer accurate. REMOVEOLDERJRES has been ignored since JRE 8u371, and RETAIN_ALL_VERSIONS=1 was disabled in JRE 8u421. If a particular older JRE 8 installation must remain during updates, Oracle says to use STATIC=1 instead.
Uninstall Java from Windows
For a normal JDK removal, open:
Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs
Select the JDK entry and remove it. Do not simply delete the JDK folder while Java processes are running.
To find the JDK uninstall command manually:
- Open Start, type regedit, and open Registry Editor.
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall.
- Select Edit → Find.
- Search for a value such as jdk-26.
- Read the UninstallString value.
A silent MSI removal uses this format:
MsiExec.exe /X{<UninstallString>}
To suppress a restart:
MsiExec.exe /X{<UninstallString>} REBOOT=R
Replace the placeholder with the product identifier from the registry. Registry changes affect the whole machine, so copy the uninstall value exactly.

Is Java 26 a JRE or a JDK?
Oracle distributes Java 26 as JDK 26.0.2. The JDK contains the Java runtime required to run applications as well as development tools such as the Java compiler.
Is there a 32-bit Java 26 download for Windows?
No. Oracle’s JDK 26, JDK 25, and JDK 21 Windows downloads are x64 only. Oracle’s current 32-bit standalone Windows Java package is the legacy JRE 8u501 x86/i586 package.
Should I install Java 8 or JDK 26?

Where is JDK 26 installed?
The default directory is C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-26. An update release can use a full version directory such as jdk-26.0.1.
The Bottom Line
For a new 64-bit Windows installation, choose JDK 26.0.2 unless your organization requires the LTS line, in which case choose JDK 25.0.4. There is no current Oracle JRE 26 download. Choose JRE 8u501 only for software that specifically needs Java 8, and use the x86/i586 installer only for a 32-bit application.
