For a new desktop app, compare JavaFX with Swing and SWT; for a browser-based app, consider Vaadin Flow or Jakarta Faces. If you need to put an existing desktop interface in a browser, Webswing offers a different route.
Start by deciding where the interface should run
Java UI options do not all build the same kind of application. JavaFX, Swing, and SWT/JFace are desktop toolkits. Vaadin Flow and Jakarta Faces are for browser-based web applications. Webswing is different: it can deliver certain existing Java desktop interfaces through a browser rather than replacing them with a conventional web UI.
That distinction matters when choosing. A browser application and a desktop application made accessible through a browser may look similar to an end user, but they use different UI models. Decide whether you are building a desktop program, building a web app, or exposing a desktop app online before comparing controls and styling.
Compare the main Java UI frameworks
| Framework | Primary surface | Strong fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| JavaFX | Desktop | New, rich cross-platform desktop applications | A separate toolkit and API set to adopt |
| Swing | Desktop | Maintaining established Swing applications and stable forms | An older UI model; modern controls may require additional libraries |
| SWT/JFace | Desktop | Eclipse-style workbenches and native OS widgets | Native-library packaging and platform-specific deployment |
| Vaadin Flow | Browser/web | Enterprise web applications built with Java UI code | A server-driven web architecture to learn and operate |
| Jakarta Faces | Browser/web | Jakarta EE applications using component-based views | Most suitable when the project already follows Jakarta EE conventions |
| Webswing | Browser delivery of desktop UI | Making an existing desktop interface accessible in a browser | Requires evaluating a vendor platform and migration architecture |
JavaFX
Oracle describes JavaFX as “a UI toolkit for building advanced, cross-platform desktop applications in Java.” Its documented capabilities include CSS styling, FXML, and animation. JavaFX also has interoperability APIs: SwingNode and JFXPanel can connect JavaFX and Swing content, which can help with mixed interfaces or gradual migration.

Swing
Swing remains part of the Java SE API: it is present in the java.desktop documentation for Java SE 26. That makes it a viable maintenance option for an existing codebase, not a framework that has vanished from current Java SE. Its continued availability does not by itself make it the best starting point for a new interface.
SWT/JFace
SWT emphasizes native operating-system widgets, while JFace is commonly associated with Eclipse-style workbenches. That native orientation comes with deployment work: account for the native libraries and platform-specific packaging required by the target environments.
Vaadin Flow
Vaadin Flow uses Java code to build a browser UI with a server-side model that manages the interface and communication with the browser. Vaadin documentation describes more than 40 UI components. This is a Java-centric way to build a web application, not a desktop toolkit rendered in a browser.
Jakarta Faces
Jakarta Faces is a component-based UI framework for Java web applications. The Jakarta Faces 4.0 specification describes component-based views and includes the HTML_BASIC render kit. It is a natural candidate when the application is already built around Jakarta EE conventions.

Webswing
Webswing is a browser-delivery option for existing desktop software. Its documentation lists Swing, JavaFX, SWT, NetBeans, and Oracle Forms among the applications that can run in modern browsers. This can support incremental modernization when replacing the desktop UI all at once is not the preferred route; assess the platform and migration design for the particular application.
Choose by project situation
- Starting a rich desktop application: Choose JavaFX when its cross-platform desktop toolkit, CSS, FXML, and animation fit the interface and the team accepts adopting a separate toolkit.
- Maintaining a substantial Swing codebase: Keep Swing when existing screens, libraries, and Java SE integration make continuity more useful than a rewrite.
- Building an Eclipse-style workbench or prioritizing native widgets: Evaluate SWT/JFace, and plan deployment for each target platform.
- Building a browser app with a Java-first component model: Consider Vaadin Flow if a server-driven UI architecture suits the application.
- Working within Jakarta EE: Consider Jakarta Faces when component-based server-rendered views align with the project’s existing conventions.
- Giving users browser access to an existing desktop app: Evaluate Webswing before assuming the desktop UI must be rewritten as a web application.
Is there one “best” Java GUI framework?
No single option is best for every Java UI. JavaFX, Swing, and SWT/JFace address desktop needs; Vaadin Flow and Jakarta Faces address web-app needs; Webswing addresses browser delivery of supported desktop interfaces. Choose based on the application’s required surface and architecture, not on an unsupported ranking or popularity claim.

No authoritative adoption or market-share figure is established here, so popularity should not be treated as a deciding statistic.
