Java is a practical way to add AI features to existing enterprise applications—not because it has displaced Python for model research or training, but because Java services can connect to hosted models, organizational data, and tools without being rebuilt in another language. The stack typically combines a Java application, a framework or provider API, a model service, and (when needed) retrieval and tool integrations.
What “Java + AI” means—and what it doesn’t
The phrase covers two different activities: putting AI capabilities into a Java application, and using AI coding assistants to help developers write Java. They are related, but evidence about one does not establish adoption or results for the other.
This article is about application features: for example, a Java service that asks a model to summarize a support case, answer questions using company documents, or invoke an approved business tool. It is not a claim that Java has become the usual language for training foundation models. Microsoft’s Asir V Selvasingh, Principal Architect – Java on Microsoft Azure, puts the application distinction this way: “Java developers are not building models – they are building apps on top of foundation models.”
How the Java AI stack fits together
A typical design keeps the existing Java service as the application layer and adds connections to model and data services. The model may be hosted remotely; retrieval and tool access are optional components chosen for the feature.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Java application: An existing service—such as one built with Spring Boot, Quarkus, or an application server—continues to own business workflows and application rules.
- Integration layer: Call a model provider’s SDK or REST API directly, or use a Java-focused framework to organize provider access and common application patterns.
- Model layer: Send a request to a hosted foundation model through its API. The model service is separate from the Java application runtime.
- Business data and retrieval: If responses need to be grounded in organizational information, retrieve relevant material and provide it to the model. This commonly involves embeddings and a vector store or database.
- Tools and orchestration: Where the use case requires actions or external context, connect the model-enabled application to approved tools and data sources, with the application retaining control over permissions and validation.
Microsoft’s representative stack examples include PostgreSQL serving as business data storage and as a vector database. That is one possible implementation, not a requirement: select storage and retrieval components to match the data, access model, and operational constraints.
Choose an integration approach
The best starting point depends on the Java stack already in place, the provider features needed, and how much abstraction the team wants. Microsoft’s May 2025 article discusses Spring AI and LangChain4j; Inside.java also covers Jlama and Oracle Generative AI. The options below are not ranked winners.

| Choice | Best fit | Trade-offs to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Spring AI | Teams centered on Spring that want framework-aligned model integration. | Provider coverage, release cadence, fit of the abstractions, and observability and security patterns. |
| LangChain4j | Java teams seeking Java-first LLM abstractions and integrations across frameworks. | Required integrations, framework fit, maturity of the features needed, and operational behavior. |
| Direct provider SDK or REST API | Teams that need provider-specific capabilities quickly or want tighter control over requests. | More integration code owned by the application team and potential migration work if providers change. |
LangChain4j’s described abstractions include provider access, prompts, chat memory, tools, embedding models, and vector stores. A framework can reduce repeated integration work, but it does not remove the need to assess the behavior and operational requirements of the particular features you use.
Hosted model API or local inference?
A hosted API is the straightforward option when a Java service needs model capabilities without operating the model itself. The service sends requests over the network; the provider manages inference. This means hosted-model API use does not, by itself, require buying a GPU.

Local or in-process inference is a different architecture. Microsoft describes loading local model weights at runtime, commonly with GPU use. Consider it when there is a concrete reason to keep inference local or use downloaded weights, and evaluate model/runtime compatibility, memory and compute needs, deployment footprint, performance, and operations. The cited material does not establish a universal hardware threshold or identify a suitable GPU model.
| Approach | What the Java application connects to | Trade-offs to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted model API | A remote model service through an API. | Network latency, service cost, data policy, quotas, and provider availability. |
| Local/in-process model | Model weights and an inference runtime available in the application’s deployment environment. | Model/runtime compatibility, GPU and memory needs, deployment footprint, performance, and operations. |
When retrieval and MCP belong in the design
Use retrieval when answers need organizational context
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) can supply selected information from business sources to a model when answering a request. Embeddings represent text for similarity-based retrieval, and a vector database or store can help find relevant material. These components do not guarantee accurate or current answers: teams still need to design for data freshness, permissions, retrieval quality, and evaluation. A retrieved document should not become accessible to a user merely because it was technically available to the application.

Use MCP as an integration protocol, not a safety boundary
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) provides an interoperability approach for connecting AI applications with tools and data. Microsoft says Spring AI and LangChain4j can connect to local or remote MCP servers. MCP is neither a model nor a replacement for the application’s security design. The application should authorize tool access, validate inputs and outputs, and constrain actions to what the user and workflow are permitted to do.

Plan for production, not just a successful prompt
A model call that works in a demo is only one part of an application feature. Before deployment, decide how the Java service will handle the provider and data paths it depends on, and how the feature behaves when those dependencies are slow or unavailable.
- Security and data handling: Review what content leaves the application, provider data policies, authorization to business records, and access to tools.
- Observability: Track relevant application and model interactions while respecting privacy and data-retention requirements.
- Latency and cost: Account for network calls, model usage, retrieval, and expected request volume.
- Failure behavior: Define timeouts, retries where appropriate, fallbacks, and what users see when a model or data service is unavailable.
- Quality checks: Evaluate retrieval and generated outputs against the feature’s actual tasks rather than assuming that a successful API response is a correct answer.
These decisions are specific to the provider, deployment, data, and feature; adopting a Java framework does not settle them automatically.
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose
- Start with the application: Identify the Java service and business workflow where an AI capability would add value. Avoid treating a language migration as a prerequisite.
- Choose the integration surface: Compare a provider SDK or REST API with Spring AI or LangChain4j based on existing framework fit, needed integrations, control, and operational requirements.
- Select hosted or local inference: Prefer the architecture that meets data and deployment needs; local inference brings model-runtime and infrastructure responsibilities that a hosted API does not.
- Add only the supporting components the feature needs: Use retrieval for relevant organizational knowledge and tool connections for approved actions, rather than adding vector storage or tool orchestration by default.
- Validate the full behavior: Check permissions, response quality, latency, cost, observability, and failure handling before relying on the feature in production.
