Java 25 compact source files can make a small Micronaut entry point shorter, but they do not, by themselves, make a Micronaut application start faster. Java removes the need to write an explicit class declaration; Micronaut still has to bootstrap the application. Its getting-started guide uses a named Application class, while the Micronaut 5.2 API also documents an argument-only run overload that discovers application classes. Treat compact syntax as a possible learning or source-simplicity option, not as a performance optimization or a verified deployment default.

What Java 25 compact source files change

A compact source file lets you write fields and methods at the top level, without first declaring a class. The compiler places those members in an implicitly declared class. That class still exists; the syntax simply hides its declaration.

For example, Java 25 can run this small program:

void main() {
    IO.println("Hello, world!");
}

The launcher can run the source directly with java HelloWorld.java. Alternatively, compile it with javac HelloWorld.java and launch it with java HelloWorld. The generated class name is an implementation detail and cannot be referred to from Java source code.

The implicit class is final, is in the unnamed package, extends Object, and has a zero-argument default constructor. You cannot add another constructor, and the class cannot serve as a named application type for other source files to reference. A compact source file needs a launchable main method.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How the launcher chooses main

The launcher uses an accessible void main(String[] args) when one is available; otherwise, it can use an accessible zero-argument void main(). The method may be an instance method: the launcher creates an instance through the implicit class’s default constructor and invokes it.

Java 25 console output

Java 25 makes compact source files and instance main methods permanent language features after preview releases in Java 21, 22, 23, and 24. The final feature name is “Compact Source Files and Instance Main Methods”; older material may call them unnamed or implicitly declared classes.

For simple console output, Java 25 provides IO in java.lang, so the class is available without an import. Its static methods are not automatically imported: write IO.println(...), or explicitly static-import the method if you want to call it without the class name.

How Micronaut’s documented entry point works

Micronaut’s Java/Maven getting-started guide demonstrates a conventional named application class. It says Application.java is used when running through Gradle or deployment, and shows the application class passed to Micronaut together with the command-line arguments:

package example.micronaut;

import io.micronaut.runtime.Micronaut;

public class Application {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        Micronaut.run(Application.class, args);
    }
}

This form gives the application a named, packaged type and makes the bootstrap target explicit. It is the documented baseline to compare with compact syntax.

Can you use compact syntax for a Micronaut entry point?

Micronaut 5.2’s API documents a Micronaut.run(String... args) overload that discovers application classes automatically, alongside overloads that accept a Class<?> or Class<?>[]. That provides a possible way to avoid writing an explicit application-class argument in a compact-source example. For instance:

import io.micronaut.runtime.Micronaut;

void main(String[] args) {
    Micronaut.run(args);
}

This illustrates the syntax and the documented argument-only API; it does not establish that this is a supported or recommended compact-source setup for every Micronaut build. A compact source file’s implicit class is unnamed from source and in the unnamed package, unlike the packaged Application class in Micronaut’s guide. The cited API signature does not establish how class discovery, packaging, or deployment behaves for this arrangement.

When the conventional class is the better choice

  • Keep the named Application class when you want to follow Micronaut’s documented Gradle and deployment example.
  • Use the compact form as a small learning example or experiment when reducing entry-point boilerplate is useful.
  • Before relying on compact syntax in a real build, check the guidance for your chosen Micronaut version and verify that the build and deployment package discover the intended application classes.

Does compact syntax make Micronaut start faster?

No startup-time improvement is established for changing only the entry-point syntax. The available Micronaut documentation attributes a qualitative startup-time improvement and reduced memory footprint for JVM-based applications to compiling ahead of time with GraalVM to produce a native executable. That is a separate compilation and deployment choice, not a benefit of compact source files.

To test whether an entry-point change affects startup in a particular application, compare runs using the same Micronaut version, JDK, build mode, configuration, and runtime environment. Measure actual startup times; the documentation cited here does not provide a compact-source-versus-conventional-class benchmark.

What to take away

  • Java 25 compact source files remove the explicit class declaration from a small program, but the compiler still supplies an implicit class.
  • Micronaut’s documented getting-started entry point remains a named class passed to Micronaut.run with the arguments.
  • The Micronaut 5.2 argument-only overload offers a possible compact example, but its API signature alone does not verify compact-source deployment compatibility.
  • Do not confuse simpler source syntax with faster framework startup; the documented performance discussion concerns GraalVM native compilation.
