You can access Japan’s Nintendo eShop by changing the country/region on your Nintendo Account, but buying there is not as simple as switching storefronts: your local card may not be accepted, account balance does not transfer between countries, and downloadable content (DLC) must match the region of the game. Whether Japan is cheaper depends on the specific game, edition, home country, and date.

Which eShop storefront does your Switch use?

On Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Account’s country/region determines which eShop storefront the console opens. After you change that account setting, the corresponding storefront appears the next time the console connects to the eShop. Nintendo’s account-country instructions explain the setting and storefront relationship.

This is an account setting, not a separate console-wide store selector. Changing it affects which country’s storefront you access with that account.

Is the Japanese eShop cheaper than your local eShop?

There is no reliable general answer: prices vary by game, edition, country, and date, and the title you want and your home country both matter. A displayed yen price alone does not establish that buying from Japan will cost less after currency conversion and payment fees.

#1 Best Overall

Compare the same game fairly

  1. Choose the identical game and edition in both storefronts.
  2. Record each displayed price on the same date.
  3. Convert the Japanese price using an exchange rate for that date, and note the rate and source you used.
  4. Include any currency-conversion or payment fees charged by your card or payment service.
  5. Check whether the regional releases differ in content or DLC compatibility before treating them as equivalent purchases.

This method gives you a comparison for one purchase; it does not imply that one country’s eShop is consistently less expensive.

Can you pay on Japan’s eShop with your local payment method?

Do not assume that a card issued in your country will work on Japan’s storefront. Nintendo warns that credit cards issued in one region may not work in a different region’s eShop. Acceptance depends on the card and purchase flow, so verify it rather than relying on the fact that the card works in your local store. Nintendo’s regional compatibility guidance covers cards and eShop cards.

Payment routes documented by Nintendo in Japan

Nintendo Japan documents credit cards and Nintendo prepaid cards or numbers as payment routes. Its Switch 2 purchase guide also lists PayPal as an option for adding balance; that guide says PayPal is unavailable to accounts aged 17 or younger. Available methods can differ by device and transaction flow, so check the options shown for your account and purchase. Nintendo Japan’s Switch 2 purchase guide describes its balance-addition options.

A Japan-region prepaid card or code may provide another way to add funds, but confirm that the card is intended for Japan and valid for the account’s region before buying. Nintendo says eShop cards work only in the country or region for which they are intended, and it cannot replace, exchange, or refund a card bought for another region. Nintendo Japan’s prepaid-card information explains how prepaid value is applied; Nintendo’s compatibility guidance addresses regional restrictions.

What happens to your balance if you change countries?

Your Nintendo Account balance does not carry over when you change its country/region. Nintendo says you must spend the remaining balance before changing the setting. An outstanding eShop balance can therefore prevent the change rather than simply appearing in the new storefront. Nintendo’s country-change instructions list this restriction.

Check these blockers before changing the account country

  • Remaining eShop balance.
  • An active auto-renewal for a membership, pass, or subscription.
  • A digital preorder that has not yet become available.
  • Account-age or family-group conditions described in Nintendo’s country-change instructions.

Review Nintendo’s instructions for your account before attempting the change, especially if any of these conditions may apply.

Will Japanese games and DLC work with your existing software?

Do not assume that copies with the same title from different storefronts are the same software region. Nintendo recommends buying software made for the console’s region and says DLC works only with the same-region game release. In Nintendo’s words, “DLC will only work with games that are released for the same region as the DLC.” Check the game’s support information or packaging before buying a base game or add-on. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance explains regional software and DLC support.

Nintendo identifies an exception involving consoles and games distributed in the Chinese region: they are not compatible with consoles and games distributed in the Americas. Check Nintendo’s guidance for the specific software and console rather than generalizing compatibility across regions.

How do you redownload purchases after April 30, 2025?

Nintendo Japan says that, since April 30, 2025, redownloads of purchased software and add-on content are handled through Virtual Game Cards rather than the eShop. This is a change to the redownload workflow; it does not change which storefront your account country selects. Nintendo Japan’s account support page describes the redownload change.
