Before buying a Japan eSIM, check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Then compare the plan’s data, validity, coverage, sharing rules and activation timing. Complete any registration or profile download while you still have reliable internet, and keep airport Wi-Fi or another connection option as a landing fallback.
1. Check that your phone can use the eSIM
An eSIM plan works only if your exact phone model supports eSIM, and a third-party mobile plan generally requires the phone to be unlocked. Do not assume that a recent phone qualifies: compatibility can differ by model and carrier. Check your device settings and the plan provider’s current compatibility information before paying.
Japan’s National Tourism Organization (JNTO) states that a phone must be unlocked to use a SIM card. Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ) likewise specifies a SIM-free device with eSIM support for its visitor eSIM. See JNTO’s connectivity guide and IIJ’s visitor eSIM announcement.

2. Choose the connection that fits your trip
Short-term visitors commonly use an eSIM, a physical SIM, pocket Wi-Fi or their home carrier’s roaming service. JNTO describes eSIM and pocket Wi-Fi as especially convenient options, but there is no universal best choice: device compatibility, itinerary, data needs, sharing and total cost all matter.

| Option | What to check | Often a practical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | eSIM support, unlocked status, data and validity, coverage, activation timing, and whether tethering is allowed | A traveler who wants data on one compatible phone |
| Physical tourist SIM | Unlocked and compatible phone, SIM size or installation requirements, data allowance, validity, and whether voice or SMS is included | A traveler whose phone accepts a physical SIM but who does not want a separate hotspot |
| Pocket Wi-Fi | Rental cost, supported devices, data and speed terms, coverage, battery, and pickup and return arrangements | A group or traveler who wants to connect several devices to one hotspot |
| Home-carrier roaming | Your carrier’s current Japan rates, eligibility, data limits and roaming settings | A traveler who values using an existing number or service and has checked the carrier’s terms |
The suggested fits are decision aids, not guarantees: plan rules differ. In particular, check tethering and device limits rather than assuming an eSIM can be shared. JNTO covers visitor SIM, eSIM and Wi-Fi options in its FAQ on arranging connectivity.
3. Compare the plan details that affect your trip
A headline data amount is not enough to establish whether a plan suits your route or usage. Verify these terms directly with the provider before purchase:

- Setup and support: Review installation instructions, required settings, support availability, and the provider’s top-up and refund rules.

4. Finish setup preparation before departure
Complete any registration or eSIM profile download while connected to reliable Wi-Fi or another internet service. IIJ’s September 25, 2025 announcement says its registration and profile download require an email address and an internet connection. Its setup may also require a separate APN entry; follow the current instructions for the specific product you buy rather than assuming all providers use the same steps.

- Register and download while online: Have the required email address and a working internet connection available.
- Save essential details: Keep your order confirmation and setup instructions somewhere you can access if mobile data is not yet working.

5. Keep a landing connection as a fallback
JNTO says major international airports provide free Wi-Fi in their terminals. That can help you message, navigate or complete setup after arrival, but it is not a guarantee of connectivity everywhere or throughout your journey. JNTO notes that hotel Wi-Fi availability varies: many major city hotels offer it, while traditional ryokan and smaller minshuku may not, especially in remote areas. Check with your accommodation. GO TOKYO’s Wi-Fi Hotspot Guide, updated September 1, 2026, also lists public Wi-Fi, SIM rental and personal hotspots as connectivity methods and directs travelers to providers for details.
