Jailbreaking changes a device’s operating system to give its user or apps control the manufacturer normally restricts. On iPhones and iPads this is usually called jailbreaking; the related practice on Android is commonly called rooting. Both can weaken security protections, affect updates or services, and create reliability problems—but the consequences vary by device and modification. For most people, keeping the original supported operating system is the safer choice.

What does jailbreaking a device mean?

Jailbreaking is an intentional change to an operating system that grants elevated control beyond the device’s built-in limits. On iOS, the usual term is jailbreaking; on Android, the related change is called rooting. NIST describes the security concern as arbitrary apps being able to run commands as root, a powerful level of access that can let an app affect parts of the system normally protected from it.

These terms are not interchangeable with unlocking a carrier or SIM restriction, installing an ordinary operating-system update, or sideloading an app. Those actions have different purposes and security implications. This article covers phones and tablets; risks on consoles, routers, TVs, and other devices require their own platform-specific evidence.

What are the risks on an iPhone or iPad?

Apple warns that unauthorized iOS modifications bypass security features and can expose personal information to theft or increase the risk of malware, spyware, and other attacks. That describes possible exposure, not proof that every modified device is infected. Apple’s advice is direct: “Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that modifies iOS.” (Apple Support: Unauthorized modification of iOS.)

Updates, services, and device reliability

Apple says modifications may interfere with future iOS updates and disrupt services such as iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, or Apple Pay, as well as push notifications. It also lists possible crashes or freezes, data loss, faster battery drain, dropped calls, slow or unreliable data, and inaccurate location information. These are risks Apple identifies, not guaranteed outcomes for every device.

Apple additionally warns that some unauthorized modifications may cause damage that cannot be repaired and could leave a device permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iOS update is installed. Its support documentation says Apple may deny service for an iPhone with unauthorized software installed. Apple’s software license terms also describe limits on service eligibility. These are Apple’s stated service and contractual positions, not a universal rule about every manufacturer, repair, or legal warranty right.

What are the risks of rooting an Android phone?

Google says modified Android versions may not receive automatic Google security updates and may compromise some Google security protections. It also warns that such versions can run apps not approved by Google with unrestricted access to device data. The practical concern is that an app with broad privileges could do more harm if it is malicious or compromised; rooting alone does not establish that an infection has occurred.

Google advises reinstalling the original Android operating system to restore its security features. The steps depend on the device and how it was modified, so use current instructions from the device maker rather than a generic procedure. If the phone remains modified, Google recommends moving important accounts and sensitive data to an unmodified device. It specifically cautions people using Advanced Protection not to use a protected account on modified Android.

These cautions concern Google’s protections and modified Android versions. They should not be read as a claim that every manufacturer, phone, or alternative operating system handles updates and security identically.

Why might a company block a rooted or jailbroken phone?

For an organization, the issue is not just the phone’s owner accepting personal risk. NIST’s Mobile Threat Catalogue identifies the possibility that arbitrary apps could execute commands as root, creating a threat to organizational data and systems if malicious apps abuse that privilege. NIST describes controls such as mobile-device-management or containerization policies that detect rooted or jailbroken devices and block access to enterprise resources. It also identifies restrictions on sideloading and third-party app stores as possible controls. The FBI’s consumer cybersecurity guidance likewise advises against rooting or jailbreaking because it compromises a device’s security architecture.

Should you keep a modified device or return to its original system?

The right choice depends on what you need the device to do. Platform guidance points toward the original supported operating system when security updates, sensitive accounts, dependable services, or work access matter. Keeping a modified system means accepting that some protections, updates, services, or apps may be affected.

Consideration Original supported operating system Modified operating system
Security and updates Retains the platform’s intended protections and update path, subject to device support. Google says modified Android versions may miss automatic security updates; Apple says some iOS modifications can interfere with future updates.
Apps and services Uses the platform’s normal app and service environment. Apple lists possible disruption to Apple services and notifications; Google warns that unapproved apps may have broad data access.
Reliability and data Avoids the specific risks Apple associates with unauthorized iOS modifications. Apple lists possible instability, data loss, battery, connectivity, and location problems.
Sensitive or work use Better aligned with Google’s advice to keep sensitive accounts on an unmodified device and with NIST’s enterprise controls. May be barred from organizational resources by device-management or containerization policies.

This is a comparison of platform guidance, not a test ranking. The available evidence does not establish a universal risk level across all devices, operating-system versions, or modification methods.

Can you undo a jailbreak or root?

There is no universal recovery procedure for every phone or modification. Google says reinstalling the original Android operating system can restore Google security features, but the exact process depends on how the device was changed. For an iPhone or iPad, consult Apple’s current device-specific recovery guidance; do not assume a generic restore will have the same result in every case.

Is jailbreaking legal, and does it void a warranty?

The platform guidance cited here does not establish a current legal answer across jurisdictions. Apple’s license and support statements describe Apple’s contractual and service position; they do not settle copyright, consumer, or device-access law everywhere. Likewise, “jailbreaking voids your warranty” is too broad: applicable law, the manufacturer’s policy, and whether a modification caused the problem can matter. Check the law and current manufacturer terms that apply where you live.
