AI content detectors are useful for screening, not for proving who wrote something. After years of testing them, my practical conclusion is that Pangram is the strongest overall option in independent 2025 testing, while GPTZero, Copyleaks, Originality.ai, and Turnitin each make more sense in particular workflows.
The result you get depends heavily on text length, language, genre, the model that generated it, and how much the text has been edited. A detector score from a 40-word paragraph is not evidence on the same level as a result from a 1,000-word document with known provenance.
Quick verdict: which AI detector should you use?
| Use case | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest false-positive risk in independent 2025 testing | Pangram | The University of Chicago benchmark found it was the only tested detector to stay within a strict 0.5% false-positive cap while retaining strong detection performance. |
| Free, quick personal check | GPTZero | It accepts pasted text and uploaded files, highlights suspicious passages, and provides a simple public interface. |
| Multilingual checks and integrations | Copyleaks | It supports more than 30 languages according to its product page and offers browser, Google Docs, LMS, and API integrations. |
| Publishing and agency workflows | Originality.ai | It combines AI detection with plagiarism, readability, grammar, factual-accuracy checks, team features, and bulk scanning. |
| A school or university already using Turnitin | Turnitin | Its AI Writing Detection is institution-licensed and integrated into the Similarity Report. |
That table is a starting point, not a claim that every scan will agree. Independent comparisons show substantial differences between detectors, particularly with short, hybrid, paraphrased, non-native English, and newer-model text.
1. Pangram: the best overall choice in 2025 testing
The strongest independent evidence currently points to Pangram. A 2025 University of Chicago working paper tested Pangram, Originality.ai, GPTZero, and an open-source RoBERTa detector across different genres, passage lengths, and language models.

Pangram maintained the best balance between false positives and false negatives. More importantly, when the researchers imposed a strict 0.5% false-positive cap, Pangram was the only tested detector that retained strong detection performance.
That matters more than a vendor claiming an impressive overall accuracy percentage. If a detector incorrectly flags genuine writing, the consequences can be serious in schools, workplaces, and publishing. A low false-positive rate is therefore a more useful metric than a large headline number.
How to run a Pangram scan
- Open Pangram AI Detector.
- Paste the text into the input field or select Upload files.
- Choose Scan for AI Content.
- Review the result and use Access past records to find earlier scans.
Pangram currently says its free plan provides four checks per day after sign-up. Its site also advertises a one-in-10,000 false-positive rate, but that is a vendor claim—not an independently established error rate that applies to every language, document type, and model.
One important limitation applies to Pangram and its competitors: the University of Chicago research found that all three commercial detectors lost accuracy on passages shorter than 50 words. Do not treat a detector result from a headline, short answer, email fragment, or isolated paragraph as a dependable authorship judgment.

GPTZero remains a convenient first check when you want to paste in text without setting up a complicated workflow. Its public interface offers:
- Paste your text or
- Upload files
- Upload from Google Drive
- Scan
The public checker displays a 0/10,000-character counter. Scans longer than 10,000 characters require a free account. Results include an overall estimated AI percentage and highlighted passages that the system considers more likely to be AI-generated.
How to scan multiple files in GPTZero
- Open the GPTZero Dashboard.
- Select Multiple Files.
- Make sure AI detection is selected.
- Check the relevant file-selection box.
- Drag files into the upload area or choose them with the file picker.
- Review the batch results once processing finishes.
GPTZero is useful for triage, but its percentage is not the probability that a particular person used AI. It is a detector score produced by a statistical model. Independent research has found that GPTZero can substantially underestimate AI content in some fully generated, hybrid, and “humanized” academic texts.

- Enhanced Screen Recording - Capture screen & webcam together, export as separate clips, and adjust placement in your final project.
- Color Adjustment Controls - Automatically improve image color, contrast, and quality of your videos.
- Frame Interpolation - Transform grainy footage into smoother, more detailed scenes by seamlessly adding AI-generated frames. (feature available on Intel AI PCs only)
- AI Object Mask - Auto-detect & mask any object, even in complex scenes, to highlight elements and add stunning effects.
- Brand Kits - Manage assets, colors, and designs to keep your video content consistent and memorable.
That makes GPTZero a reasonable free check, especially for a writer reviewing their own draft, but a poor basis for a disciplinary decision by itself.
3. Copyleaks: a strong choice for languages and integrations
Copyleaks is more compelling when the text is not English or when the detector needs to fit into an existing content system. Its product page says the AI detector supports more than 30 languages. The service also provides Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Google Docs, LMS, and API integrations.
The unauthenticated public detector allows scans of up to 25,000 characters. The basic workflow is:
- Open AI Detector.
- Paste text or upload a file.
- Select Scan.
- Review the percentage of content the system considers likely to be AI-generated.
- Create or use a free account if you need sentence-level insights and highlighted phrases.
Copyleaks describes its analysis using features such as frequency ratios, parts of speech, syllable dispersion, and hyphen usage. Those descriptions explain how the company characterizes its system; they should not be treated as an independently verified explanation of every individual result.
Its main weakness is edited or mixed writing. In a later academic comparison, Copyleaks correctly identified fully human papers in the tested dataset but performed poorly on hybrid and humanized AI papers. That is a recurring pattern across the market: changing some wording, combining human and AI passages, or paraphrasing the output can make detection substantially harder.
4. Originality.ai: best suited to publishers and teams
Originality.ai is designed less like a casual web checker and more like a publishing or agency platform. Its paid plans combine AI detection with plagiarism, readability, grammar, factual accuracy, team sharing, browser extensions, and API access.
As listed on its current pricing page:
| Plan | Monthly price | Included credits |
|---|---|---|
| Pro, monthly billing | $14.95/month | 2,000 credits per month |
| Pro, annual billing | $12.95/month | 2,000 credits per month |
| Enterprise, monthly billing | $179/month | 15,000 credits per month |
| Enterprise, annual billing | $136.58/month | 15,000 credits per month |
One credit equals 100 words. Subscription credits expire at the end of the month, so the value depends on whether you scan regularly rather than occasionally.

- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time

How Originality.ai bulk scanning works
- Open Bulk Scan.
- Upload a CSV containing text samples or URLs.
- Select the checks you need, such as AI writing, plagiarism, factual accuracy, readability, or grammar.
- Select Start Scan.
- Review the report when it is processed, or wait for the email notification.
There are several easy-to-miss restrictions. Bulk Scan accepts CSV input, not PDFs, and the maximum bulk-scan size is currently 6 MB, including text loaded from URLs. Scan history and report-retention periods also vary by plan.
Originality.ai performed better than Turnitin overall in one 2025 academic comparison, but it still struggled with hybrid texts and authentic English-as-a-foreign-language writing. Its marketing accuracy claims should not be compared directly with another vendor’s claims because the test sets, thresholds, and definitions of “accuracy” may differ.

5. Turnitin: use it when your institution already provides access
Turnitin is not a normal consumer product. Individual users cannot buy a standard standalone subscription to its AI Writing Detection feature. An institution’s Turnitin administrator must enable it as part of the institution’s license.
When the feature is available, the access path depends on the report interface:
- New Similarity Report: open the report and select the AI Writing tab from the top menu.
- Classic Similarity Report: open the report, find the AI Writing indicator in the right-side toolbar, and select the displayed percentage.
Turnitin’s file requirements
| Requirement | Current limit |
|---|---|
| File size | Less than 100 MB |
| Minimum prose | At least 300 words in a long-form format |
| Maximum length | 30,000 words |
| Supported languages | English, Spanish, and Japanese |
| Supported file types | .docx, .pdf, .txt, and .rtf |
Turnitin does not reliably analyze poetry, scripts, code, bullet lists, tables, annotated bibliographies, and other short-form or unconventional formats. The system separates AI-generated only from AI-generated text that was AI-paraphrased. The AI-paraphrase and bypasser categories are currently available only in the English model.
Turnitin also changed how it presents low scores. Scores from 1% to 20% had a higher incidence of false positives in its testing, so low results are now displayed with an asterisk rather than a precise percentage or highlighted passages. The AI score is separate from the Similarity score, which measures matching text against sources.

Why AI detectors disagree
Different results do not automatically mean one service is broken. Each detector uses a different model, training corpus, threshold, supported language set, and definition of “AI-generated.” The same document can therefore receive very different percentages from different products.
Short passages
Detection performance drops sharply on short text, particularly below 50 words. There is not enough writing for a model to distinguish meaningful patterns from normal variation. A score from a 30-word answer should not be compared with a score from a complete essay.
Hybrid writing
A document containing some human writing and some AI-generated passages is especially difficult to classify. A detector may identify the generated section, miss it, or average the signals into an unhelpful overall percentage.
Paraphrased or “humanized” text
Rewriting AI output can reduce detection accuracy. The University of Chicago benchmark found that GPTZero’s false-negative rate rose substantially on stealth-generated text, while Pangram was more robust in that test. More recent comparisons also found substantial underestimation by several popular tools on humanized text.
Non-native English writing
Authentic English-as-a-foreign-language writing can contain predictable vocabulary and syntax. Those patterns may resemble the signals detectors associate with generated text. This creates a fairness problem: a low-confidence detector result can reflect language background or writing style rather than AI use.
New language models
Detector performance can age quickly. A model trained or evaluated against one generation of AI systems may perform differently against a newer model. Published accuracy is meaningful only alongside the date, model, corpus, language, and threshold used to measure it.

If you want to compare detectors rather than just run one curiosity scan, use the same controlled process:
Best Value
- Transform audio playing via your speakers and headphones
- Improve sound quality by adjusting it with effects
- Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware
- Use exactly the same text in every detector.
- Use 500 to 1,000 words where possible. Keep a shorter sample only as a separate test condition.
- Test original, unedited AI output separately.
- Include human-written text with known provenance.
- Test hybrid text as its own category.
- Test lightly edited or paraphrased text separately.
- Record the date, word count, language, model version if shown, and score.
- Compare patterns and highlighted passages, not just the headline percentage.
- Treat disagreements as expected.
For a personal workflow, I would run a draft through Pangram and GPTZero, then inspect the writing manually. For multilingual content or software integrations, add Copyleaks. For a publishing team that also needs plagiarism and editorial checks, Originality.ai is the more complete platform. If a school already uses Turnitin, its report is the relevant institutional signal—but still not conclusive proof.
Claims you should stop believing
- “A detector can prove who wrote a document.” It cannot. A result is an indicator that needs context and human review.
- “OpenAI has an official ChatGPT detector.” OpenAI discontinued its AI Classifier on July 20, 2023, citing low accuracy.
- “A 0% score proves the text is human.” It only means the detector did not identify enough qualifying signals under its threshold.
- “Turnitin’s AI score is its plagiarism score.” The two scores are independent.
- “Every detector should return roughly the same percentage.” They use different models and thresholds, so disagreement is normal.
- “Vendor accuracy claims can be compared side by side.” Not without knowing how each company built its test set and calculated the result.
The practical rule is simple: use detectors to decide what deserves a closer look, not to decide guilt, authorship, employment, grades, or reputation on their own.
FAQ
Which AI detector is most accurate in 2025?
Pangram has the strongest independent 2025 evidence among the tools covered here. A University of Chicago working paper found that it had the best balance of false positives and false negatives and was the only tested detector to meet a strict 0.5% false-positive cap while retaining strong detection performance. That does not make it universally accurate.
Is GPTZero free?
GPTZero provides a public free checker for pasted or uploaded text. The public interface shows a 10,000-character limit; longer scans require a free account. It can show an overall estimated AI percentage and highlighted passages, but the result is not proof that a person used AI.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan Turnitin detect ChatGPT?
Turnitin offers AI Writing Detection where an institution has licensed and enabled the feature. It requires at least 300 words of long-form prose and supports English, Spanish, and Japanese. Turnitin says the AI score should not be used as the sole basis for action against a student.
Can AI detectors reliably identify edited or hybrid AI writing?
No. Hybrid, paraphrased, and humanized text is a major weakness across current detectors. Accuracy also varies with passage length, language, genre, and the AI model used. These results should be treated as screening signals and reviewed alongside drafts, sources, revision history, and the writer’s explanation.
The Bottom Line
My recommendation: start with Pangram when minimizing false positives matters, use GPTZero for a quick free check, choose Copyleaks for multilingual or integrated workflows, and choose Originality.ai for publishing teams that need several editorial checks in one place. Use Turnitin when your institution already provides it.
None of these tools can prove authorship. The safest workflow is to test enough text, compare results cautiously, preserve the original document and revision history, and require human review before making an academic, employment, disciplinary, or reputational decision.
