Choose iStat Menus if you need advanced sensor detail, fan control, weather, and extensive menu customization. Choose Stats if you want a free, open-source menu bar monitor for common system metrics and its feature set covers your needs. Your macOS version matters: the currently listed minimums are macOS 11 for iStat Menus 7.5 and macOS 12 for Stats.

These are product and maintainer statements, not results from comparative testing. Neither app has an independent performance benchmark established here.
Choose iStat Menus for deeper control and detail
iStat Menus is the stronger fit when you want more than glanceable CPU or memory figures. Bjango lists CPU, GPU, memory, disks, network, sensors, battery, and weather monitoring. Its Sensors section includes temperatures, fan speeds, CPU frequency, supported GPU frequency, voltages, current, and power; which readings appear depends on hardware support. It also offers fan control, including switching or ramping fans based on temperature and battery state.
Customization is another reason to choose it: Bjango describes configurable menu displays and a combined mode that can consolidate multiple readings into one menu bar item. Check the iStat Menus product page for the current feature list and compatibility details. Bjango lists version 7.5 as requiring macOS 11 or later and offers a 14-day trial. If fan control or specific sensors are essential, use the trial on the Mac you intend to monitor to confirm those options work with its hardware.

Choose Stats for a free, open-source monitor
Stats covers many everyday monitoring needs: its documented modules include CPU, GPU, RAM, disk, sensors, network, battery, Bluetooth, and clock. The project website lists 13 widget styles and support for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Stats is free and released under the MIT License, making it the more direct choice if you want source availability and do not need iStat Menus’ fan controls or weather features.
The project states that macOS 12 or later is required. Its GitHub repository documents requests to its API for update checks and public-IP retrieval, with GitHub as an update-check fallback. It also says Stats does not collect telemetry or analytics. Open source therefore does not mean the app makes no network requests; review the repository’s disclosures if that distinction matters to you.

Consider module activity
Stats’ maintainer warns that modules can have different resource costs and identifies Sensors and Bluetooth as particularly inefficient in some cases. That is not a quantified comparison with iStat Menus, but it is a practical reason to turn off modules you do not use if minimizing background work matters. The repository also notes that Apple Silicon sensor labels refer to sensor locations and do not necessarily correspond to individual CPU cores.

The Stats repository says that on macOS 26, you may need to allow the app’s icons explicitly in System Settings → Menu Bar. This is a release-specific troubleshooting note; it does not establish that every macOS 26 installation will require the change.

Which one fits your needs?
- Pick iStat Menus if fan control, detailed sensor readings, weather, or extensive menu customization are decisive. Try it on your Mac before purchasing.
- Pick Stats if its free, open-source modules cover the metrics you want and your Mac meets its stated OS requirement. Check its network disclosures and disable unnecessary modules if background activity is a concern.
- Use Activity Monitor if you only need occasional process inspection and do not need persistent menu bar indicators. It is a built-in option, not a like-for-like replacement for an always-visible monitor.
What about cost and performance?
Stats is free according to the project. Bjango offers a 14-day iStat Menus trial and lists Setapp availability, but the linked product page does not state a standalone purchase price. Pricing can vary by storefront and region, so check the current listing where you plan to buy rather than relying on an old or third-party figure.
There is no substantiated head-to-head measurement here for CPU use, battery impact, accuracy, or reliability. Bjango describes iStat Menus as efficient, while Stats’ maintainer identifies some modules as more resource-intensive; those statements are not comparable measurements. If resource use is a deciding factor, evaluate the apps on your own Mac with only the modules and update intervals you actually intend to use.
