Streaming around the clock can use hundreds or thousands of gigabytes in a month, depending on video quality and the service. To avoid exceeding your internet data cap, check your plan’s current allowance and usage meter, then consider lowering playback quality or streaming fewer hours; if that trade-off does not work, compare plans available at your address.

How Much Data Does Streaming Use?

Streaming use varies with resolution, service, device, and settings. AT&T gives approximate examples of about 1 GB per hour on a smartphone, up to 3 GB per hour for HD video on a tablet or connected device, and up to 7 GB per hour for 4K. These are provider examples, not a universal rate for every stream.

AT&T example Approximate hourly use Calculated use over 30 days of continuous viewing
Smartphone streaming About 1 GB About 720 GB
HD on a tablet or connected device Up to 3 GB Up to 2,160 GB
4K streaming Up to 7 GB Up to 5,040 GB

The monthly totals are arithmetic based on AT&T’s approximate hourly examples: 720 hours in 30 days multiplied by the hourly rate. They are not measured household results. Your actual usage may differ, so use your provider’s account meter to check it.

Does Streaming Count Toward My Internet Data Cap?

That depends on your provider and plan. AT&T says streaming over a home network counts toward usage for the relevant service. Xfinity support has likewise said internet-delivered video and downloads count toward its usage plan, but that guidance is specific to that provider and plan. Check your own plan terms and account meter rather than assuming all providers count usage the same way.

The Federal Communications Commission defines data caps as “restrictions set by BIAS providers on the volume of bits that a consumer can transfer during a set period of time.” The FCC’s 2024 order also describes possible consequences of exceeding a cap, which can include fees, slower speeds, suspension, or termination, depending on the provider’s terms. (Federal Communications Commission, FCC 24-106, 2024.)

How to Stream Without Going Over Your Data Cap

  1. Find your plan’s current broadband label and terms, including the monthly allowance, billing-cycle dates, and what happens if you exceed the allowance.
  2. Check your provider’s account usage meter. Provider accounting and exceptions differ, so use the meter for your plan and billing cycle.
  3. Review the playback quality settings on the devices and services you use. Try a lower resolution and compare the viewing experience with your household’s needs.
  4. Estimate usage by multiplying viewing hours by an appropriate hourly estimate. Treat estimates as a starting point and compare them with your account meter.
  5. If lowering quality or viewing hours is not enough, compare plans available at your address, including higher-allowance or uncapped options. Review current prices, fees, performance, and terms before switching.

Some providers offer video optimization that can lower resolution and data use in specified circumstances. T-Mobile describes such optimization in its internet-service disclosure, but its terms do not necessarily apply to every plan, streaming service, or home Wi-Fi connection. Check whether an option applies to your service before relying on it.

Option Potential effect on data use What to check
Keep current quality and hours Usage may remain high, particularly for continuous HD or 4K viewing. Allowance, account meter, and consequences for exceeding the cap.
Lower resolution or watch fewer hours Can reduce demand, depending on the service and settings. Actual usage in the provider meter and whether the quality change is acceptable.
Use a provider video optimization feature May reduce video resolution and data use in specified circumstances. Which plans, networks, and services the feature covers.
Switch to a higher-allowance or uncapped plan May offer more room for continuous viewing. Availability at your address, price, fees, performance, and current plan terms.

For example, AT&T advertises its Fiber plans as having no data caps. That does not mean the service is available at every address; verify availability and the exact current offer terms before choosing a plan.

FAQ

How much data does 24/7 streaming use in a month?

It depends on the quality and service. Using AT&T’s approximate examples, uninterrupted viewing for 30 days works out to about 720 GB at 1 GB per hour, up to 2,160 GB at 3 GB per hour, or up to 5,040 GB at 7 GB per hour. These are calculations from provider examples, not a guarantee of actual household usage.

Does streaming count toward my internet data cap?

It may. AT&T says home-network streaming counts toward usage for the relevant service, and Xfinity support has offered similar plan-specific guidance. Check your own provider’s terms and usage meter.

Will lowering video resolution reduce data use?

It can reduce demand, but the amount depends on the streaming service, device, and settings. Test a lower resolution and check your provider’s meter to see the effect on your account.
