Yes—you can visit the Isle of Skye without a car, but you need to plan around the transport that exists. Long-distance coaches and mainland rail connections get you to the island; Stagecoach buses connect its main villages. For sights that are not convenient to reach by bus, use a guided tour, a carefully planned walk or a pre-booked taxi. Check the outward and return journeys for your travel date before committing to an itinerary.
How to reach Skye without driving
Skye has no railway. Your main choices are a direct coach from the mainland, or a train to a mainland connection followed by bus or ferry. The island’s public transport guide outlines the rail-and-bus approach via Kyle of Lochalsh and the rail-and-ferry approach via Mallaig.
- Coach: Scottish Citylink provides long-distance coach connections, including direct services from Glasgow and Inverness, according to VisitScotland. Check the operator’s current departures and stop locations for your date.
- Train via Kyle of Lochalsh: Take the train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, then continue by bus across the Skye Bridge. Confirm the connecting service and its timing before booking rail travel.
- Train and ferry via Mallaig: Travel by train to Mallaig and take the ferry to Armadale on Skye. VisitScotland warns that onward public transport from Armadale is very limited; arrange a taxi or other onward connection in advance, or consider the Kyle of Lochalsh route for more public transport options.
What local buses can—and cannot—do
VisitScotland says, “The island is served by Stagecoach buses, connecting the main villages.” That describes the network’s purpose, not a bus stop at every landmark. Routes can help you travel between settlements, but a famous attraction may still require a walk, a separate connection or other transport. Do not assume a convenient return service just because a bus passes through a nearby village.

A route guide lists these Stagecoach corridors: 52 Portree–Armadale, 55 Kyle of Lochalsh–Elgol, 56 Portree–Dunvegan–Glendale, and 57a/57c Portree–Staffin–Uig. Treat the route numbers as a starting point for research, not confirmation of current service days or frequency; check the route and timetable links for your date.
#1 Best Overall
Citylink is primarily useful for reaching Skye from the mainland. The island transport guide also notes that it may serve some shorter trips, such as Kyle of Lochalsh or Broadford to Portree. Compare coach and local-bus connections rather than assuming every settlement-to-settlement journey will be covered by one operator.
Ways to reach attractions beyond a convenient bus stop
Choose a guided excursion for dispersed sights
Guided tours can make remote or scattered stops practical without a car. A destination guide describes day trips from Inverness and one-, two- and three-day tours from Edinburgh or Glasgow. Those descriptions do not guarantee a particular operator’s current schedule, so check each tour’s departure point, named stops, time at each stop and return city before booking. See Eiskye’s guide to reaching Skye for an overview of tour options.
Rank #2
Walk only when the full route is workable
A bus-and-walk combination can work when the stop is close enough, the route is clear and safe, and the return bus leaves enough time to visit the sight. Check the walking distance and route—not just the name of the nearest village—and avoid plans that depend on an uncertain lift or an impractical roadside walk.
Pre-book a taxi for a specific gap
A taxi can bridge a missing connection or make a remote stay workable, but do not count on finding one at a rural stop. Arrange pickup and return details ahead of time, especially when connecting from Armadale or planning a visit outside a settlement.
Choose a base and plan each day around connections
Portree is a useful base for many itineraries because several routes listed in the local route guide connect there. More generally, lodging in a settlement with scheduled transport can reduce difficult transfers; a remote accommodation may leave you reliant on a taxi or lift for the first and last leg.
- Pick a small area for each day. Group nearby places instead of trying to cross the island repeatedly.
- Check the trip both ways. Confirm the outward and return services, service days and transfer times for the actual date you will travel.
- Check the final approach. Establish whether the bus reaches the attraction, a nearby village or only a road stop, and whether a walk from there is safe and realistic.
- Leave a margin. Avoid itineraries that depend on a tight transfer or the last possible connection, particularly where onward services are limited.
- Confirm with the operator. Use Scotland’s Traveline journey planner to explore buses, coaches, ferries and rail, then verify times with the relevant operator because schedules and seasonal services can change.
What the £2 bus fare cap means for a Skye trip
Transport Scotland’s fare-cap guidance, accessed in 2026, says eligible single adult and child fares on participating bus services in the Highlands and Islands are capped at £2. This is a fare rule, not a promise that every bus ride costs £2: passengers pay a separate fare for each bus change, and premium services—including tour buses, night services and private hire—are excluded. The page lists Stagecoach and Citylink among participating operators, but eligibility depends on the service and participation can change. Check the exact journey against Transport Scotland’s current fare-cap guidance before relying on it.
