Wolfenstein: Youngblood is most worth playing if you have a friend to join you: co-op is central to the game, and a 2019 review by Time praised the fun of playing together and the sisters’ banter. You can play solo, but the companion AI was a notable weakness in that review, especially in difficult fights. Whether it suits you also depends on how much you value flexible missions and progression over a story and endgame that the reviewer found less compelling.

What kind of Wolfenstein game is Youngblood?

Released on July 26, 2019, Wolfenstein: Youngblood follows Jess and Soph Blazkowicz, daughters of BJ Blazkowicz, as they search for their missing father in Nazi-occupied Paris. This is a fictional alternate-history setting, not a depiction of real events. Bethesda described the Parisian Catacombs as a base and said missions could be tackled in any order. Bethesda’s announcement positioned co-op as a central feature.

The missions take place across semi-open areas, with character abilities supporting approaches such as stealth or close combat. The result is a co-op-focused run-and-gun shooter with progression elements, rather than an entry whose main appeal is a tightly linear campaign. Time’s 2019 review described the missions this way and praised the characterization of Jess and Soph. Read the review.

Pros of Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Co-op gives the game its strongest identity

If you want a shooter to play with a friend, Youngblood’s design is built around that option. Bethesda’s launch announcement said co-op includes in-game voice chat. Its 2019 announcement also described a Deluxe Edition with a Buddy Pass that let the owner invite a friend who did not own the game. That is historical edition information, not a guarantee of current availability or account requirements; check the platform’s current listing before relying on the pass.

  • the wonder years, these are not. Featuring harrowing takes on iconic Parisian landmarks to graffiti-tagged streets, leather-clad Nazis, and an all-new soundtrack inspired by the synth heavy tones of classic 80s action films
  • Wield the latest advancements in power armor Tech, weaponry, and armor to stamp out Nazi scum. Level up, explore, and complete missions to unlock new abilities, weapon attachments, gadgets, cosmetics, and more to complement your playstyle

The sisters’ relationship adds personality

Time’s reviewer praised the protagonists’ characterization and sisterly banter. That may be a draw if you like character interaction alongside combat, although it is a reviewer’s judgment rather than a promise that the writing will work for every player.

Missions allow different approaches

Bethesda described missions that could be attempted in any order, while the review noted semi-open zones and abilities that enable stealth or close-combat approaches. That structure can appeal if you prefer some freedom in how you move through a shooter rather than a single prescribed route.

Cons and trade-offs to consider

Solo play relies on a companion the review criticized

Can you play Wolfenstein: Youngblood solo? Yes: the game supports solo play with an AI companion. But Time’s 2019 reviewer found that companion unreliable in difficult fights. If you expect the AI to perform like a capable human co-op partner, that reported weakness is a reason to be cautious. Solo suitability is therefore a qualified fit, not the game’s clearest strength.

The story may not satisfy fans looking for stronger themes

The same review found the story less engaging than earlier entries’ treatment of their themes. If narrative and thematic depth matter more to you than co-op combat, that assessment weighs against Youngblood. It is one reviewer’s view, not a consensus measure of how players will respond.

Wolfenstein: The Board Game (En)
  • Action-packed dungeon crawler with random events
  • Cooperative gameplay for 1 to 4 players
  • Play as a legendary B.J. Blazkowicz or one of five unique heroes
  • Explore Castle Wolfenstein and face the terrifying Mecha-Hitler
  • Play a full campaign or 1 of 10 story-driven missions

The endgame may not offer much reason to continue

Time’s reviewer felt there was not enough reason to keep playing after the main experience. That matters most if replayable endgame content is a major part of what you want from a shooter. The review also mentioned cosmetic microtransactions, but its reviewer did not feel pressured to buy them; this 2019 observation does not establish the game’s current monetization details.

Is it worth playing solo or with a friend?

What matters most to you How Youngblood may fit
You can play with a friend and want co-op-focused action Strongest fit: co-op is a central feature, and the cited review found playing with a friend fun.
You expect to play alone Possible, but less compelling if you need dependable AI support in hard fights; the review criticized the companion in that situation.
You value banter and character interaction Potential fit: the review praised the sisters’ banter and characterization.
You prioritize story themes or a substantial endgame Consider carefully: the reviewer found the story less engaging than earlier entries and the endgame lacking in reasons to continue.
You like flexible missions and varied combat approaches Potential fit: Bethesda described missions available in any order, and the review noted abilities supporting stealth or close combat.

The reviewer reported a playthrough of approximately eight hours. That is one reviewer’s account from 2019, not a general campaign-length benchmark.
