Yes. The open-source urlwatch project is software you install and run; its official quick start describes scheduled execution, not a paid subscription. The software itself has no published monthly fee. Your actual cost depends on where it runs and which notification services or optional features you choose.

What urlwatch does

urlwatch checks webpages or other job outputs for changes, compares each result with a saved previous result, and can notify you when it finds a difference. Reports can include the changed URL and a unified diff. Jobs can fetch URLs, use a headless browser for JavaScript-heavy pages, or run shell commands. Filters can select page elements or process HTML, PDF, JSON, calendar, binary, and text output. See the urlwatch handbook for the project’s capabilities and configuration.

What does it cost to run?

There is no universal monthly price because urlwatch is software you run in an environment you choose. The project documentation does not publish a representative monthly total.

Cost factor What to expect
Computer or server If you run it on a suitable computer you already keep available, the project instructions do not require a separate hosting subscription. If you rent an always-on server, its charge depends on that provider; urlwatch does not set the price.
Schedule You choose how often it runs. The project recommends not running it more often than every 30 minutes; this is operating guidance, not a fee or billing rate.
Notifications Terminal output is an option, and the handbook lists reporters including email, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Matrix, Pushover, XMPP, and others. Any third-party account or plan may have separate terms or charges.
Optional features Some functions—such as browser jobs, selected reporters, PDF text extraction, OCR, or JSON jq filtering—may need additional software packages. These are not required for basic operation.

The current dependency documentation separates mandatory packages from optional feature dependencies. Those listed dependencies are software packages, not required hardware accessories.

Install and schedule urlwatch

The current installation instructions use pip. The handbook identifies Python 3.9 or newer and lists PyYAML, minidb, requests, keyring, platformdirs, lxml, and cssselect among mandatory packages. Check the live dependency page for the requirements that apply to the version you install.

  1. Install or upgrade with python -m pip install --upgrade urlwatch.
  2. Configure the URLs or other jobs and reporters you want to use, following the handbook.
  3. Schedule the command with cron on systems that use cron. On Windows, the quick start points to Task Scheduler. Choose a cadence that respects the project’s recommendation not to run more often than every 30 minutes.

The handbook identifies itself as urlwatch 2.29. Homebrew’s formula showed version 2.29 and a BSD-3-Clause license when checked on October 3, 2026. Versions and package metadata can change; verify the current documentation and package listing before installing.

urlwatch is not URLWatch.io

urlwatch, documented at Read the Docs and maintained at github.com/thp/urlwatch, is distinct from URLWatch.io, a separate hosted monitoring service that advertises paid plans. URLWatch.io’s subscription prices are not fees for installing or running the urlwatch project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a hosted service may be simpler

Self-hosting gives you control over configuration and where checks run, but you are responsible for keeping that environment available and maintaining its software and schedule. A hosted service may take on some operational work, but compare its actual monitor limits, check intervals, notifications, and whether it tracks page-content changes or uptime. URLWatch.io publishes its own plans; those terms apply to that service, not the urlwatch project.

If your specific need is capturing website screenshots rather than monitoring page changes, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP; create an API key and see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options such as full-page capture, device presets, and PDF settings.
