Yes. Tsushima is a real Japanese island group in Nagasaki Prefecture, located in the Korea Strait between northwestern Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula. It is closer to South Korea than to Japan’s main islands. The island in Ghost of Tsushima is inspired by the real place, but its map is not a one-to-one recreation.
Where is Tsushima Island?
Tsushima lies in the Korea Strait, between northwestern Kyushu and the southern end of the Korean Peninsula. “Tsushima Island” is the familiar name, though the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency describes Tsushima as two large islands and several smaller ones. Calling it an island group is therefore more geographically precise. U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Sailing Directions, Pub. 159, Sector 4
Does Tsushima belong to Japan or South Korea?
Tsushima is Japanese territory, part of Nagasaki Prefecture. Its position near the Korean Peninsula explains why it is often described in relation to both Japan and Korea, but proximity does not make it part of South Korea.

Is the Tsushima in Ghost of Tsushima the real island?
The game is set on Tsushima and draws on the real island, but its geography is fictionalized. Sucker Punch Productions’ Environment Art Lead Joanna Wang wrote, “Tsushima is a real place, a Japanese island located between the Japanese mainland and the Korean Peninsula.” The studio also says its version “is not a 1:1 recreation of the real-life counterpart — it’s a love letter to all of its parts.” In developing the game world, the team combined essential elements of Tsushima with inspiration from mainland Japan. Sucker Punch Productions, “Crafting the world of Tsushima,” July 9, 2020
Nagasaki’s regional tourism page likewise identifies Tsushima as the setting and says the game world takes inspiration from the actual island. That does not mean the in-game map, distances, landmarks, or terrain match real-world geography exactly. Nagasaki Prefecture tourism association: Ghost Of Tsushima – About Tsushima
