Thermacell says its products should not be a concern for people or pets when used according to their label directions, and that they may be used in backyards and places where food is served. For LIV 2.0 specifically, follow the current label for the system and its repellent cartridge: the detailed label was not available in the sources reviewed here, so general Thermacell guidance cannot replace product-specific instructions.
What Thermacell says about pets, children, and food
Thermacell’s published safety guidance says its products, when used according to label instructions, should not be a concern for people or pets. The company also says there are no agency use restrictions around children and no restrictions on using its products in backyards or places where food may be served. These are manufacturer statements, not a substitute for the exact LIV 2.0 label.
Pets
Thermacell’s LIV support guidance recommends contacting a veterinarian if you have questions about use around a specific pet. This is the manufacturer’s advice to consult your own veterinarian, not an individual veterinarian’s assessment of LIV 2.0.
Children
Thermacell says there are no agency use restrictions around children. EPA explains that it reviews pesticide labels and risk data, including risks to sensitive groups such as children. Read and follow the current label for the exact product rather than treating the manufacturer’s general statement as permission to disregard its directions.

Food and produce
Thermacell says its products may be used where food is served, subject to label directions. For produce grown near a device, the company recommends washing it before eating.
Why the exact LIV 2.0 label matters
Thermacell announced LIV 2.0 on June 2, 2026, describing expanded EPA-registered claims for mosquitoes and no-see-ums. That announcement identifies the system and its stated claims; it does not provide detailed exposure or handling instructions. The EPA-approved label for the exact LIV 2.0 product and cartridge is the source to consult for those directions.

EPA says it evaluates pesticide labels and risk information and advises users to follow label instructions carefully. Its Pesticide Product Label System can be searched by product, company, chemical, or registration number. Thermacell’s LIV Smart support page identifies metofluthrin at 5.5% as the active ingredient in LIV Smart repellent cartridges; the LIV 2.0 launch announcement does not independently establish that its cartridges use the same formulation.
A surfaced EPA label for Thermacell Mosquito Repellent II, dated December 19, 2024, says not to contaminate food or feed through storage or disposal and to store unused mats where children and pets cannot access them. That is a different identified product, so its directions must not be transferred to LIV 2.0.

How to use the guidance responsibly
- Find the current label for the exact LIV 2.0 system and repellent cartridge in EPA’s Pesticide Product Label System, searching by product, company, chemical, or registration number.
- Follow the label’s use, placement, storage, and handling instructions. Do not rely on a different Thermacell product’s label as a substitute.
- For a concern about a particular pet, ask your veterinarian; wash produce grown near use, as Thermacell recommends.
What Thermacell’s surface-testing figure does—and does not—show
Thermacell says its tests found deposited ingredient on nearby surfaces below one billionth of a gram per square centimeter, its stated detection level. The company does not identify this figure as a LIV 2.0-specific result, and it is not an independent study. It should not be treated as a measurement of every surface, exposure, or use condition.
