JavaScript can be embedded in an HTML document in several ways, including an inline event handler such as onclick="..." or a <script> block. When v.Nu parses the containing document, it may encounter that code and report a problem associated with the surrounding markup or parsing context.

That incidental encounter does not make v.Nu a JavaScript validator. A message caused by malformed inline code should be interpreted as feedback from parsing the HTML document, not as a complete analysis of JavaScript syntax, style, security, or maintainability.
Inline event-handler example
Consider this element:

It will not, however, replace a JavaScript parser that can explain the missing expression, identify unreachable code, enforce a style policy, or detect broader JavaScript problems.

Nu Html Checker versus a JavaScript linter

For JavaScript diagnostics, the discussion around this question names JSLint and JSHint. CodePen’s “Analyze JS” feature is another example of a JavaScript-focused analysis option. Choose a tool that matches your project’s language version, style rules, and build system rather than expecting the HTML checker to cover those concerns.
How to check a page that contains JavaScript
- Check the document with v.Nu. Submit the page to validator.nu, or run the project locally or in automation using one of its documented distribution options.
- Fix HTML, CSS, and SVG findings first. These are the areas v.Nu is intended to assess.
- Run a JavaScript-specific checker separately. Pass external scripts and inline JavaScript through JSLint, JSHint, or another current JavaScript parser or linter.
- Test behavior in a browser as well. A linter can find source-level issues, but it does not prove that event handlers, DOM assumptions, network calls, or runtime state work correctly.
This separation is especially useful in continuous integration: one job can validate document structure while another runs JavaScript linting and tests.

What a zero-error result means
A clean result is useful evidence that the checker found no problems under its current rules. It is not a permanent certification that a document conforms to every specification or that its JavaScript is correct.
The Nu Html Checker’s About guidance says it “should not be used as a means to attempt to unilaterally enforce pass/fail conformance of documents to any particular specifications; it is intended solely as a checker, not as a pass/fail certification mechanism.” The project also notes that checks continue to be added. Consequently, a document that reports zero errors today may receive a different result after the checker’s rules evolve.

Practical answer for inline JavaScript
- Use v.Nu to find problems in the HTML document that contains the code.
- Do not treat an inline-script-related message as comprehensive JavaScript validation.
- Use JSLint, JSHint, or another JavaScript-specific parser or linter for JavaScript syntax and quality checks.
- Prefer external JavaScript files where practical; they can be linted, tested, and maintained independently of the HTML document.
