A Netflix connection error does not, by itself, mean Netflix is down. It often means your device cannot reach Netflix over its current connection. Check whether other apps or devices are affected, then troubleshoot the device, network, or ISP before assuming there is a Netflix-wide problem.
Is there a network issue with Netflix?
Possibly, but the error alone cannot tell you whether the problem is Netflix, your internet connection, or the device you are using. Netflix describes “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix” as a connection problem that prevents a device from reaching the service. Other messages readers may see include “Not connected to the Internet,” “Netflix is Currently Unavailable,” and error code “NW-2-5.”
Netflix’s Help Center troubleshooting pages, accessed October 7, 2026, give device- and error-specific instructions; they do not establish whether Netflix or a particular ISP is having a live outage when you encounter an error. Check your ISP’s local outage information if the symptoms point to a wider connection problem.
How to tell whether the problem is Netflix, your device, or the network
Use the comparisons below as clues, not proof. A working app or device does not rule out every Netflix-specific problem, and a single failing device does not necessarily mean its hardware is faulty.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
| What to compare | What the result suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix versus another internet-connected app on the same device | If other apps also fail, the device may have a broader connection problem. If they work, the issue is narrower, but that does not prove Netflix is down. | Check the device’s network connection in settings, if available, then follow Netflix’s instructions for that device and error. |
| One device versus other devices on the same network | If several devices have trouble, investigate shared network equipment, settings, or the ISP. If only one does, start with that device’s connection and software. | Test another phone, computer, or streaming device on the same Wi-Fi, then report the results if you contact your ISP. |
| Wi-Fi versus Ethernet | A Wi-Fi-only problem may point to signal or coverage; a problem on both connection types may have another cause. | Move the router and streaming device closer where practical, and tell your ISP which connection type you tested. |
| Home network versus public Wi-Fi | Public networks may restrict video streaming even when other internet activity works. | Try a permitted private network, or ask the network operator whether streaming is blocked. |
| Ordinary connection symptoms versus NW-2-5 | NW-2-5 means the device took too long to connect to Netflix; DNS settings may be one cause. | Use Netflix’s instructions for your device. On consoles, its guidance includes restoring DNS to automatic. |
What to do when Netflix will not connect
- Write down the exact message and device. Note the full error text or code and whether you are using a TV, console, streaming device, phone, or computer. Netflix’s steps differ by device and error.
- Test another app on the same device. If it also cannot get online, check the device’s network test or connection settings, if available. If other apps work, continue with Netflix’s device-specific troubleshooting rather than concluding that there is an outage.
- Check another device on the same network. If multiple devices fail, the shared network or ISP deserves attention. If only one fails, check its connection, software, and manufacturer guidance.
- Restart the device and home network. Follow the instructions for your equipment. Netflix’s general guidance includes turning off the device, unplugging the modem and router, waiting, reconnecting the network equipment, and trying Netflix again. Equipment and device instructions may specify different wait times.
- Consider the type of network. Public Wi-Fi may block streaming. A mobile hotspot or satellite connection may not provide enough speed for playback. If you are on a restricted network, changing device settings may not remove the restriction.
- Check DNS only when the device-specific guidance calls for it. For NW-2-5, Netflix says the device took too long to connect and identifies incorrect DNS as a possible issue. Its console instructions include setting DNS to automatic. Do not change DNS settings unless you know how to restore them or can follow the instructions for your device.
- Contact your ISP if network symptoms persist. Ask it to check for a local outage, modem or router problems, DNS issues, and network configuration. Explain whether one device or several are affected and whether the streaming device uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet. After any changes, test Netflix again; Netflix also recommends using Fast.com to check the connection to Netflix.
When a router change may help
Do not buy a router just because Netflix displays a connection error. If the problem appears limited to weak home Wi-Fi coverage, first try moving the router and streaming device closer or improving their placement. If symptoms point to poor coverage or outdated equipment, ask your ISP to assess the router and available options. Netflix’s guidance does not recommend a particular router model, and new equipment will not resolve an ISP outage, a public-network streaming restriction, a DNS configuration issue, or a Netflix-side problem.

Netflix’s Help Center gives this wording for a connection error: “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix. Please try again or visit www.netflix.com/tvhelp for guidance.” For error code NW-2-5, Netflix says: “Error code NW-2-5 means your device took too long to connect to Netflix.” Use the Help Center’s instructions for the exact device and error you see.
