Usually, no—not if your current PS5 works, fits your setup, and meets your needs. Sony presents the Slim as the same PS5 technology in a smaller form factor, not as a performance-tier upgrade. It makes the most sense if you need a smaller console, are replacing a failing one, or prefer a particular disc or storage configuration. Whether swapping is good value depends on today’s local price and what you can get for your existing PS5.
What changes with the PS5 Slim?
Sony described the Slim as a smaller PS5 with the same technology features. In its October 2023 announcement, Sony said the new model’s volume was reduced by more than 30%; it also reported weight reductions of 18% for the disc model and 24% for the Digital Edition compared with the previous models. Those are Sony’s published launch comparisons, not a guarantee that every later console revision has identical dimensions or weight. Sony’s 2023 announcement
For a more specific reference, Sony’s CFI-21 manual lists the disc configuration at approximately 358 × 96 × 216 mm and 3.1 kg, and the Digital Edition at approximately 358 × 80 × 216 mm and 2.5 kg. Check your console’s model group and edition when comparing measurements. Sony CFI-21 manuals
Is the Slim a gaming-performance upgrade?
There is no demonstrated performance upgrade in Sony’s stated specifications. Sony’s launch description says the same technology features are packed into a smaller form factor, and the published specifications do not establish that a particular game loads faster, looks better, or runs at a higher frame rate on Slim. If your reason for upgrading is better gameplay, the available evidence does not support buying the Slim for that purpose.

Which PS5 Slim edition suits your media habits?
Disc-equipped Slim
Choose the disc configuration if you use PS5 or supported PS4 game discs, or want a console that can play physical movies. It avoids the separate-drive decision associated with the Digital Edition.
Digital Edition with a detachable drive
The Digital Edition can use a separately sold compatible detachable drive. Sony lists compatibility with PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Slim model groups. The drive supports PS5 games, supported PS4 titles, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD media; initial setup requires an internet connection to pair it. Check the exact model number and Sony’s current compatibility information before buying. Set up a disc drive for PS5 PS5 disc drive compatibility

This add-on is relevant if you are considering a compatible Digital Edition and want physical media. It is not an upgrade accessory for an existing disc-equipped PS5.

Is storage a reason to replace your PS5?
Storage depends on the model and edition. Sony’s CFI-21 manual lists a 1 TB custom SSD for the disc model and 825 GB for the Digital Edition; both have an M.2 SSD expansion connector. That means “Slim has 1 TB” is not accurate for every configuration. Sony CFI-21 manuals

If your existing PS5 is short on space, compare adding a compatible M.2 SSD with replacing the console. Sony’s earlier FAQ describes M.2 storage expansion as a PS5 feature; consult Sony’s current requirements before choosing a drive. Install an M.2 SSD in a PS5 console

| Your situation | Practical choice | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Your PS5 works, fits, and performs as you expect | Keep it | The cited evidence establishes a smaller form factor, not a gameplay-performance gain. |
| Your current console is too large for your space | Consider the Slim | Size and weight are the clearest practical differences. |
| Your console is failing and you need a replacement | Compare Slim configurations | Choose disc or Digital Edition based on how you use games and movies. |
| You mainly need more game storage | Compare M.2 expansion first | Check Sony’s current compatibility requirements for an SSD. |
| You are deciding whether the swap is financially worthwhile | Compare current local costs | Factor in the Slim’s price and the amount you can realistically get for your existing PS5. |
