Maybe—but PSSR alone is a good reason to upgrade only if the games you play support it, your display can show the difference you value, and the improvement justifies your actual upgrade cost. Sony says the upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) improves fine-detail clarity and image stability on PS5 Pro, but results vary by game. Standard PS5 owners should also weigh Sony’s newly announced QSSR upscaling for selected PS5 games.

What PSSR changes on PS5 Pro

PSSR is Sony’s AI image-upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. It analyzes game images as it upscales them, reconstructing a higher-resolution output from the game’s rendered image. On March 16, 2026, Sony announced an upgraded version, describing improvements to image stability, fine detail, and consistency across supported games. Those are Sony’s claims, not a guarantee that every player or game will show the same improvement. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement

The practical benefit can be a clearer or steadier image, or more flexibility for a developer to balance visual quality and performance. Whether that matters to you depends on the specific game and its graphics options; PSSR is not a universal image-quality switch that improves every PS5 Pro game.

Check whether your games use PSSR

Compare Sony’s current supported-game list with the titles you actually play. The US PS5 Pro page lists these games with enhanced PSSR: Resident Evil Requiem, SILENT HILL f, SILENT HILL 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, Control, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077. Sony’s list can change as games and system software are updated, so check it before buying. Sony’s US PS5 Pro page

Sony said in February 2026 that the original PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That count does not mean every one of those games uses the upgraded PSSR or benefits equally. Check support for each game you care about rather than treating the total as a measure of how much improvement you will see. Sony’s February 2026 PSSR announcement

Try the upgraded PSSR setting in supported games

Sony says PS5 Pro’s Enhance PSSR Image Quality system setting can enable the upgraded method in supported games, including some originally made for the earlier PSSR. The option is game-dependent, and Sony warns that results vary. If enabling it causes unexpected visual effects, Sony says you can turn it off. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement

When deciding whether the upgrade matters, focus on what changes in your own regular games: image stability in motion, the visibility of fine details, and the graphics or performance modes available. Sony’s feature descriptions do not establish a measured uplift that applies across titles, and no independent like-for-like benchmark is established here.

Consider what your display and games can show

Sony advertises 4K output and up to 120fps with ray tracing and PSSR for compatible games on a compatible 4K TV. These are conditional capabilities, not a promise that one game will deliver all of them at once. Confirm the modes available in the games you play and the capabilities of your display before counting them as a reason to upgrade. Sony’s US PS5 Pro page

If you already have a suitable display, the question is whether the supported games offer improvements you will notice and value on it. If your display cannot show the resolution or refresh-rate features you care about, those advertised capabilities may not affect your experience without a display change.

Factor in QSSR on the standard PS5

On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a separate AI-upscaling tier for standard PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use it, with patches announced for that day that add it as an optional graphics mode. Sony describes PSSR as the higher-end solution on PS5 Pro; the announcement does not establish that QSSR matches PSSR or that all PS5 games will support QSSR. Sony’s QSSR announcement

If you own a standard PS5, check whether the games you play—or plan to play—offer QSSR and whether their standard-console options already meet your needs. That support may reduce the urgency to upgrade for upscaling, but it does not make the two technologies interchangeable.

Compare the upgrade against your real cost

There is no universal price threshold for deciding whether PSSR is worth it: your net cost depends on your market, what you can get for your current console, and the purchase terms available to you. Sony’s feature claims do not establish a value-per-dollar calculation or a measured uplift across games. Make the comparison using your own figures and priorities:

Check Keep your standard PS5 Upgrade to PS5 Pro
Games you play Check current and announced QSSR support for those games; do not assume all titles will receive it. Check Sony’s current PSSR list and each game’s available modes.
Image and performance Decide whether the current experience, including any QSSR option, is good enough for you. Look for changes you value in supported games, such as steadier detail or different graphics/performance options; Sony says results vary by title.
Display Use your existing display’s resolution and refresh capabilities as your baseline. Confirm your display and chosen games support the capabilities you intend to use.
Net cost Account for the cost of keeping your current console. Calculate the local purchase cost after any trade-in, resale, or other applicable terms. No stable regional comparison is established here.
Other Pro features Consider whether your current storage and setup are adequate. Sony lists 2TB of built-in storage for PS5 Pro; count that separately from image quality.

The PS5 Pro is easier to justify when several of your regular games support PSSR, you have a display suited to the modes you want, and the resulting improvements are worth your net cost. If only one or two games interest you, or your current PS5 already meets your needs, compare the actual in-game options before treating PSSR as a reason to replace it.
