Yes, if you want a dedicated handheld with built-in controls or plan to use Portal’s cloud streaming; probably not if your phone or tablet and a compatible controller already make PS Remote Play convenient. Portal is an accessory for streaming, not a standalone PlayStation console. The value comes down to whether its integrated form factor and optional cloud-streaming features justify buying another device.
What the PlayStation Portal does—and what it does not
For console Remote Play, Portal connects to a PS5 and streams compatible games installed on that console. Your PS5 must be online, powered on or configured for Rest Mode, enabled for Remote Play, and paired with Portal. Sony says Portal is not compatible with PS4. Sony’s PS Remote Play overview explains the device and setup requirements, while its Portal compatibility information specifies the PS5 limitation.

A phone or tablet can also control a PS5 through Sony’s PS Remote Play app; Sony lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone, and iPad as supported device categories. Mobile Remote Play can also connect to a PS4. You need a PlayStation account and high-speed internet. Sony’s mobile Remote Play setup guide covers the app and setup.
Portal versus a phone or tablet
| Consideration | PlayStation Portal | Phone or tablet you already own |
|---|---|---|
| Controls and form factor | Dedicated handheld with integrated controls and screen. | Uses the mobile device’s screen; conventional gameplay may require a compatible controller. |
| Console Remote Play | Streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5; does not support PS4. | Sony’s PS Remote Play app supports PS5 and PS4 on compatible mobile devices. |
| Cloud streaming | Can stream select eligible PS5 games without using your PS5 for that session, subject to account, subscription, game, and region rules. | The Portal-specific cloud-streaming option described here is not a reason to assume the same feature is available through the mobile Remote Play app. |
| What you may need to buy | The Portal itself. | A compatible controller or mount, if your current setup needs one. Sony documents mobile controller options in its PS Remote Play overview. |
| Internet | Wi-Fi broadband; Sony publishes separate guidance for Remote Play and cloud streaming. | High-speed internet; the experience also depends on the network environment. |
Compare Portal’s purchase cost with the additional cost of making your existing device comfortable to use—not with what you originally paid for the phone or tablet. If you already have a suitable controller and are happy with the setup, mobile Remote Play is the lower-cost choice.

When Portal is worth buying
You want a dedicated handheld
Portal brings the display and controls together in one device, so there is no need to balance a phone or tablet with a separate controller. That can make it a more appealing everyday setup if you regularly play away from the TV and value an integrated handheld. Comfort and convenience are personal preferences; Sony’s published requirements do not establish that Portal is more comfortable or more responsive than a particular mobile setup.
You want Portal cloud streaming
Cloud streaming is different from Remote Play: it can stream certain eligible games without relying on your own PS5 for that session. Sony says the selection includes games from the PS Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus select digital games in your library. Eligible titles and regional availability can change. Sony’s cloud-streaming support page sets out current eligibility and requirements.
Cloud streaming requires an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership, an eligible adult PlayStation account, broadband, a Portal, and access from a supported country or region. Child accounts are not supported. Sony’s November 5, 2025 PlayStation Blog announcement described playing when the PS5 at home is powered off or being used by another account.

Portal is built for game streaming; it is not a general Android tablet or a replacement for a phone. If you want one device for browsing, messaging, video, and games, a phone or tablet remains more versatile. Portal makes more sense when the dedicated gaming format is itself a benefit.

When your phone or tablet is the better buy
You already have a comfortable mobile setup
If your device runs PS Remote Play and you have a controller arrangement you like, Portal may duplicate what you already do. A compatible controller can add to the cost of the mobile option, but only count that expense if you actually need to buy one. Sony’s mobile setup guide describes supported device categories; controller compatibility depends on the device and controller.
You do not need Portal’s cloud-streaming option
For Remote Play alone, a PlayStation Plus subscription is not required. An online multiplayer game may have its own membership requirement, but that is separate from using Remote Play. If you only want to stream games from your own PS5, cloud streaming’s Premium subscription requirement is not a reason you must subscribe.
You need PS4 Remote Play
Sony’s mobile app supports PS4 Remote Play, while Portal does not support PS4. If PS4 access is important to your setup, use a compatible phone or tablet instead.

Check the network before deciding
Sony’s figures are connection requirements, not independent measurements of image quality, lag, or how Portal compares with a phone. For Portal use, Sony lists a minimum of 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. For Portal cloud streaming, Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps minimum for 720p, and 13 Mbps minimum for 1080p. These are Sony-published guidance figures, and Sony cautions that connection quality varies with the network environment. Portal Remote Play guidance and cloud-streaming requirements describe the respective thresholds.

Speed alone does not guarantee a smooth session. Wi-Fi congestion, unstable coverage, latency, or a public network’s login portal can interfere with play. Before paying for a dedicated device, try Remote Play on your existing mobile device over the networks where you expect to use it. Treat public Wi-Fi as uncertain rather than assuming it will work well.
Audio and software details to factor in
Sony lists wired headsets or earbuds with a 3.5 mm plug and PlayStation Link wireless audio devices as compatible with Portal. If you rely on a different wireless audio setup, check its compatibility before choosing Portal. Audio compatibility is not required to make the phone-versus-Portal decision if your current listening arrangement works for you. Sony’s Portal compatibility page lists supported audio options.
Portal’s software and cloud-streaming features can change. Sony’s system-software page listed version 7.0.2 at the time of the cited information and documents earlier additions such as 1080p High Quality mode and cloud-streaming improvements; that version number is not a claim about the latest release. Check Sony’s Portal system software page for current version and feature details.
Quick Recap
A simple decision
- Buy Portal if you own a PS5, want a dedicated handheld with integrated controls, and expect to use it regularly—or specifically value eligible Portal cloud streaming and meet its requirements.
- Use your phone or tablet if it already runs PS Remote Play, your controller setup is comfortable, and you would rather avoid buying another screen-and-controls device.
- Check compatibility first if you mainly play PS4, depend on a particular controller or headset, or expect to use Portal away from a reliable Wi-Fi network.
