It can be worth buying used if you specifically want a foldable phone and can inspect the individual unit before paying. Prioritize a flawless inner display and smoothly moving hinge, then check the phone’s IMEI-based coverage, repair and liquid history, software-update status, and the seller’s return terms. A low asking price is not enough to make a damaged or uncertain foldable a good buy.
Who should consider a used Pixel Fold?
The original Pixel Fold is most appealing if you want a phone that opens into a larger screen: Google lists a 5.8-inch external display and a 7.6-inch folding display, with a hinge designed to open through 180 degrees. Those specifications describe the model, not the condition of a particular used phone. See Google’s Pixel phone hardware specifications and its Pixel Fold announcement.
It is a less straightforward choice if you need a low-risk repair, dust-resistant construction, or a long period of remaining software support. Google’s update policy gives the Pixel Fold five years of operating-system and security updates, counted from its first availability on the Google Store in the US—not from the date you buy it used. Check the specific phone’s current update status; the policy does not establish an exact end date for every handset. Google’s Pixel update policy explains the support clock.
What to check first when inspecting one
- Inspect and test the inner display. Open the phone and examine the folding screen in bright, even light. Look for lines, black spots, dead pixels, pressure marks, scratches, and a lifting screen protector. Test touch response across the entire panel. Google says display lines, flickering, black spots, or a blank screen may be assessed for warranty eligibility when there is no physical or liquid damage; cracked screens and physical damage may be excluded. Check Google’s warranty guidance rather than assuming a visible issue will be covered.
- Move the hinge gently through its range. Open the phone fully and close it without forcing it. Watch for uneven movement, abnormal resistance, misalignment, or visible damage. Google describes a 180-degree hinge design, but that specification is no assurance that a used hinge is functioning properly.
- Look for debris and signs of damage. Examine the hinge area and inner screen, but do not deliberately expose the phone to dust or sand as a test. Google states that the device is not dust resistant and warns that fine particles can scratch the flexible display or damage the hinge. Its Pixel Fold safety and regulatory guide sets out these precautions.
- Test everyday hardware. Check both displays, cameras, buttons, speakers, microphones, charging, startup, and cellular connection. Also make a call or otherwise test the microphone and speaker, and confirm the phone connects to the network you intend to use. Google’s warranty help lists charging, startup, freezing, microphone, speaker, button, internet, and cell-signal issues among problems to assess.
- Ask about liquid exposure and repairs. Request service records or receipts and ask directly whether the phone has been opened, repaired, dropped, or exposed to liquid. The original model was rated IPX8 when it left the factory, but that rating does not establish the water resistance of a used device. Google says water resistance can diminish or be lost through normal wear, repair, disassembly, or damage.
- Check coverage before money changes hands. Ask the seller for the IMEI and use Google’s warranty eligibility checker to check status and repair eligibility for that handset. Coverage can be affected by unauthorized modifications or repairs, counterfeit parts, accidents, misuse, and liquid exposure. Verify the result for the phone and its country of purchase; a seller’s general assurance is not a substitute.
- Compare the whole deal, not just the price. Compare listings with the same storage and weigh screen and hinge condition, repair history, update status, carrier or regional compatibility, return window, and verified coverage. iFixit’s January 2024 Pixel Fold repair snapshot reports that Google made a service manual, original parts, and calibration tools available, while noting complicated steps and that some repairs may be impractical or expensive. It is not a current repair quote or confirmation that parts remain in stock.
How to judge the seller’s answers
Prefer a seller who lets you test both screens, the hinge, charging, cameras, audio, and connectivity; provides the IMEI for a coverage check; and can describe the repair and liquid history. A return period gives you a way to respond if a problem appears after the inspection, but read its actual conditions before buying.

Treat missing repair records, an unavailable IMEI, or a refusal to let you test the folding screen as unresolved risk—not proof that the phone is defective. There is no representative published statistic in the cited sources establishing how often original Pixel Fold hinges or inner displays fail, so anecdotes cannot tell you the odds for the handset you are considering.

Proceed only if the foldable design is worth the trade-offs to you and the specific device passes inspection. A clean inner screen and smooth hinge are essential checks; verified coverage, a credible repair history, a usable return policy, and adequate remaining updates strengthen the case. If any of those are uncertain, factor that uncertainty into your willingness to buy rather than treating the asking price as the full cost.
