Yes. Mattel’s Hot Wheels Radar Gun (model J2358) used genuine Doppler radar to measure speed, rather than displaying a simulated result. It was a $30 toy-era device, not professional police equipment: its range and precision were limited, and Mattel discontinued it in 2007.

How the Hot Wheels Radar Gun works

The J2358 sends out a microwave signal and receives the signal reflected by a moving vehicle. The target’s motion changes the reflected signal’s frequency; the gun processes that Doppler shift into a speed reading. EE Times describes an assembly using a roughly 10.5-GHz signal, with a dielectric-resonator oscillator, patch antennas, a mixer, an amplifier, and an Atmel ATmega88 controller. Make: specifies an operating frequency of 10.525 GHz.

That is real radar physics, but it does not make the toy equivalent to a professional speed-measuring instrument. Make: reports a maximum detection range of about 40 feet, and EE Times cautions that the unit lacked the power and precision of police radar.

What it could measure and how to use it

The gun was designed to read Hot Wheels cars, but its display could also show real-world speed. The FCC filing describes instantaneous readings in either real speed or 1:64 scale speed, and Mattel’s product description says it lets users read the speed of Hot Wheels vehicles.

  • Speed units: A switch selects mph or kph.
  • Scale display: Another switch toggles between 1:1 real speed and 1:64 Hot Wheels scale speed.
  • Power: Four AAA batteries.
  • Aiming: The FCC filing instructs users to aim at a 25–45-degree angle to the front or rear of a moving vehicle.

These functions make the unit a toy with a genuine measurement method, not evidence that it can reliably measure every full-size car in ordinary traffic. Its reported short range and lower precision limit what to expect from it.

What “on the cheap” meant

In a 2007 EE Times report, Portelligent president David Carey said the HWRG retailed for $30 and likely cost $10–$15 to manufacture. Those are historical figures, not today’s used-market prices. The low original retail price was notable because the device included a real Doppler radar system, but the trade-off was capability: limited range and less precision than professional equipment.

Can you modify it?

Yes. Make: documented a modification by Ken Delahoussaye that separated the antenna from the display and control board, connected the parts with instrumentation cable, and mounted the antenna on a tripod so it could be positioned near traffic while the display was operated remotely.

That project shows the device can serve as a practical electronics-hacking platform. It does not establish that modified readings are accurate or that placing equipment near traffic is safe; the project is a historical modification report, not a present-day operating guide.

Where to find a Hot Wheels Radar Gun J2358

Mattel lists J2358 as released in 2006 and discontinued in 2007. The company says replacement parts are not currently available, so anyone seeking one should expect to find a used or collectible unit rather than a supported current product. A search for “Mattel Hot Wheels Radar Gun” may help locate listings, but availability and price depend on what sellers currently offer.

Because surviving units are used electronics, check the condition, battery compartment for leakage, LCD operation, and whether the radar produces readings before buying. A working display alone does not confirm that the radar function works.
