For most Galaxy S25 Ultra owners, upgrading to the S26 Ultra is worthwhile only if a specific new feature solves a real need and the net cost is comfortable. The clearest reasons to switch are the S26 Ultra’s built-in Privacy Display, camera changes, faster wired charging, and modestly thinner, lighter design. If your S25 Ultra is working well and the upgrade would cost a lot after trade-in, keeping it is the sensible default.
What changes from the S25 Ultra to the S26 Ultra?
Samsung’s comparison and product materials describe several updates, but their value depends on how you use your phone. The Privacy Display is the most distinct new feature; the other changes are a mix of hardware updates and refinements.

- You do not often need added privacy for your screen in public or shared spaces.
- Your current camera results, charging routine, and phone performance are already satisfactory.
- The amount you would pay after trade-in feels too high for the changes that matter to you.
When is the S26 Ultra a sensible upgrade?
Consider upgrading when one or more of the S26 Ultra’s changes addresses a concrete frustration—not simply because it is the newer model.

Compare the actual price, not an old trade-in headline
Samsung’s US comparison page lists the Galaxy S26 Ultra from $1,299.99 before trade-in. Samsung US TechRadar reported US launch prices of $1,299 for the S25 Ultra 256GB and $1,299.99 for the S26 Ultra 256GB. Samsung’s February 25, 2026 US launch announcement advertised up to $900 in eligible instant trade-in credit, or $150 without trade-in, during a limited preorder period. Use this comparison before deciding
- Find the current price for the S26 Ultra in your market and the exact storage tier you want.
- Check the current resale or trade-in value of your S25 Ultra, including eligibility and condition requirements.
- Calculate the S26 Ultra’s net cost after the value you will actually receive—not a maximum advertised credit you may not qualify for.
- Compare offers on the same storage capacity, carrier or unlocked status, warranty, and trade-in condition.
- Decide whether the features you will use justify that net cost.
What if you are buying a new phone rather than upgrading?
Compare current local offers for both models. TechRadar considers the S25 Ultra potentially better value if it is substantially cheaper, while its overall comparison favors the S26 Ultra as the newer, better-equipped phone.
