Sync.com says its core storage service is end-to-end encrypted by default, but that does not mean every feature or account setting has the same privacy properties. Optional features may temporarily process selected content at a different encryption level, and Sync’s Terms say escrow-key account recovery is not strictly zero-knowledge. To judge the service for your needs, consider its core encryption, the features you enable, recovery settings, account protections, data region, and the scope of its assurance reports.

Does Sync.com encrypt files end-to-end by default?

According to Sync’s Privacy Policy, last updated September 15, 2026, its core storage service is end-to-end encrypted by default. Sync says stored file content is generally not accessed or processed by the company, subject to stated exceptions and feature-related processing. This is a provider claim, not an independent test of the current apps or their implementation. Sync Privacy Policy

Sync’s public SOC 3 report describes client-side AES-256 encryption before transmission and TLS in transit. Those are technical descriptions in the report, not a guarantee that every security risk is eliminated. Sync SOC 3 report

Can Sync.com access your files?

For core storage, Sync says it generally does not access or process stored file content. However, its Privacy Policy explains that some optional features may require specific files or selected content to be temporarily processed using a different encryption level. That distinction matters: end-to-end encryption for core storage should not be read as a promise that every feature works without any content processing.

Sync identifies extended previews, media streaming, Microsoft editor, download accelerator, and link compatibility among features with privacy implications. Its Privacy Center says features that cannot operate fully end-to-end encrypted can be enabled or disabled. Availability and defaults can change, so review the controls currently shown in your account. For a team account, the administrator manages relevant settings. Sync Privacy Center help

Does account recovery affect zero-knowledge encryption?

Yes, if you enable escrow-key account recovery. Sync’s Terms state that an account using this option is not configured on a strictly zero-knowledge basis, because Sync retains the technical ability to assist with recovery. This is a tradeoff: recovery may help you regain access, while strict zero-knowledge means the provider cannot use an escrow key to help restore access to encrypted data. Check your current recovery setting and decide which priority matters more to you. Sync Terms of Service

How private is your account information and data location?

Sync distinguishes File Data from personal and account information. The Privacy Policy says account information is stored in Canada and with U.S. service providers. File data is stored in Canada or the United States depending on the data region selected. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to assume every user’s files are stored only in Canada. Sync also says it may access account metadata, such as storage information, to calculate usage and limits. Sync Privacy Policy

What can you do to protect your Sync account?

End-to-end encryption does not replace protection for the account itself. Sync recommends a strong, unique password and enabling two-factor authentication. It also suggests monitoring devices, sessions, and account events. These are provider recommendations, not measured outcomes or a guarantee against account compromise. Sync account-security help

  • Use a password that is unique to Sync, rather than reusing one from another service.
  • Enable two-factor authentication in the account settings if available to you.
  • Review connected devices, active sessions, and account activity, and remove access you no longer recognize or need.
  • Review privacy-related feature and recovery settings after account or team configuration changes.

What do Sync’s security reports establish?

Sync’s Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 materials and says reports may be provided on request. Its public SOC 3 report describes controls, client-side encryption, TLS in transit, AES-256 encryption before transmission, and Canadian colocation infrastructure. A report documents controls within its stated scope and period; it does not prove flawless security or independently validate every current application claim. Check the report itself for its coverage period and scope before relying on it. Sync Trust Center Sync SOC 3 report

  1. Core storage: Read Sync’s current statement on default end-to-end encryption and distinguish it from independently verified implementation details.
  2. Features: In the Privacy Center, check whether the optional features you plan to use involve temporary processing or a different encryption level.
  3. Recovery: Check whether escrow-key recovery is enabled and weigh recoverability against strict zero-knowledge configuration.
  4. Account protection: Set a unique password, enable two-factor authentication, and review devices and sessions.
  5. Data region: Confirm the selected region and the treatment of account information if location requirements matter.
  6. Assurance documents: Read the report period and scope, and do not treat a SOC report as proof of claims it does not cover.
