Self-hosted distributed object storage is a good fit when your application uses an object API, your organization has a concrete reason to control the storage infrastructure, and your team can operate it through failures, upgrades, and recovery. Ceph RGW is worth evaluating if object storage belongs alongside block or file storage in a broader Ceph environment; MinIO is a focused object-storage option whose current documentation describes a multi-host production topology. Neither is automatically cheaper, faster, or simpler than managed storage: the right choice depends on your workload, service targets, operating capacity, and full lifecycle cost.

Start with the application’s storage needs

Object storage is designed for applications that store and retrieve objects through an object API. It is not automatically the right backend for a database or for software that expects a conventional filesystem. Establish what the application actually needs before comparing platforms.

  • Record typical and maximum object sizes, the read/write mix, request rate, concurrency, expected peak throughput, and latency targets. Include expected growth. A workload dominated by many small objects can behave differently from one moving large sequential objects.
  • List requirements for data location, sovereignty, isolation, retention, and integration. These can make infrastructure control valuable, but they do not by themselves show that self-hosting will cost less or be easier.
  • Define what the service must survive: drive, host, rack, network, and site failures. Set availability goals, recovery time objective (RTO), and recovery point objective (RPO), and distinguish local availability from off-site disaster recovery.
  • Assign operational owners for alerts, capacity, failed-drive replacement, upgrade planning, security and access controls, backups or replication, and incident response.

These questions also define a fair comparison with a managed service: evaluate the same workload, service objectives, and recovery expectations on each option.

Compare the three paths

Option When it may fit Documented considerations What is not established
Managed object storage You want a provider to handle hardware procurement and much of the cluster maintenance. Assess service-level objectives, data location, API and application compatibility, portability, support, and expected service cost. No universal price, performance, or reliability comparison is established here; the outcome depends on the service and workload.
Ceph RGW You want S3- or Swift-compatible object access as part of a Ceph environment that may also provide block and file storage. Ceph documentation describes a unified distributed storage system and substantial operational work, including monitoring, OSD changes, upgrades, tuning, and disaster recovery. See the Ceph documentation overview. The project’s hardware guidance is not a complete bill of materials or a sufficient design for every release and workload.
MinIO You want a focused distributed object-store path and can operate a multi-host deployment. Current AIStor documentation describes a production distributed deployment with at least four hosts, homogeneous storage and compute resources, and a load balancer or equivalent network control plane. It prefers locally attached storage for performance. See MinIO AIStor core concepts. These are vendor-documented assumptions, not independent performance results. Confirm the relevant edition, lifecycle, license, and supported deployment guidance for your planned implementation.

A managed service is a useful baseline because it shifts hardware procurement and much of cluster maintenance to a provider. Self-hosting offers more direct control of hardware and data location, while making your organization responsible for capacity planning, monitoring, upgrades, recovery, and hardware replacement.

What Ceph’s hardware guidance means in practice

Ceph’s official FAQ describes the project as designed for commodity hardware and gives planning recommendations: a default OSD memory target of 4 GiB per OSD, separate drives for the operating system and OSD data, and at least 10 Gb/s networking between hosts. For production quorum and high availability, it recommends at least three monitors and at least two managers; it also recommends at least three OSDs, or as many OSDs as object copies. These are project recommendations, not a complete production architecture. Check the Ceph FAQ against the release and design you intend to use.

Replication or erasure coding?

Ceph pools use replication by default. In the Ceph Squid guide’s example, a 4+2 erasure-coding profile uses 1.5 GiB of underlying storage per 1 GiB of user data; default three-copy replication uses 3.0 GiB per 1 GiB. Those figures describe storage overhead, not a benchmark or a guarantee of usable capacity in a particular cluster.

The lower overhead of erasure coding comes with performance tradeoffs, especially with HDDs and during recovery or backfill. The chosen profile must also match the available number and placement of failure domains: Ceph says most erasure-coded deployments need at least k+m CRUSH failure domains. The guide specifically notes that RGW workloads with many small objects need careful planning. Review the Ceph Squid erasure-coding guide before choosing a profile; do not select one on capacity ratio alone.

Local redundancy is not disaster recovery

Multiple drives or nodes can help a cluster continue through local failures, but they do not create an off-site recovery copy. MinIO’s availability documentation describes erasure coding across drives and nodes and calls for site or bucket replication to establish a remote business-continuity or disaster-recovery deployment. See MinIO availability and resiliency documentation.

For either self-hosted option, make the recovery design explicit: decide where the separate copy lives, what data it contains, how current it must be, and how you will restore service. Test restoration against the RTO and RPO you set rather than treating the existence of replication as proof that recovery will meet them.

Build a workload-specific comparison

There is no evidence here to support a general claim that Ceph or MinIO is faster, cheaper, or more reliable than managed storage. Compare candidates using the same workload and service requirements, and record the assumptions behind each result.

  1. Estimate usable capacity. Account for protection overhead, growth, and the capacity needed to operate and recover the system; compare it with the capacity and pricing basis of the managed option.
  2. Test representative traffic. Use the application’s object sizes, read/write mix, concurrency, and target load. Measure the throughput and latency that matter to the application, including behavior under the conditions it must tolerate.
  3. Model the full lifecycle cost. Include servers, drives, network gear, racks or space, power and cooling, spares, support, and staff time over the intended service life. Compare this with the expected managed-service bill and the value of operational simplicity.
  4. Check recovery and service targets. Assess the failure domains, off-site copy, restoration process, and support arrangements against availability goals, RTO, and RPO.
  5. Confirm fit and portability. Validate S3/API and application compatibility, data-location requirements, support and lifecycle commitments, and the practical effort required to move data if the choice changes.

No cited prices or independent comparative benchmarks establish a universal cost or performance winner. A conclusion about either requires your own workload measurements and cost model.

When self-hosting is the wrong trade

Self-hosting is a poor fit if the application does not need object storage, if a managed service already meets the requirements at acceptable cost, or if no team can own routine operations and recovery. A control requirement may still justify evaluating self-hosting, but it does not remove the need to fund and staff the lifecycle.

Ceph is most compelling to evaluate when its object interface belongs in a broader Ceph storage environment and the organization can handle the resulting design and operations. MinIO is a candidate when a dedicated multi-host object-store deployment fits the application and its documented deployment and product terms are acceptable. If neither case is clear, compare a managed service first against the same workload and service targets.
