No—RSS is not dead as a way to monitor website updates. When a publisher maintains an RSS or Atom feed, you can follow new posts, release notes, security advisories, and notices in one place. The catch is that feeds are unevenly available, can be hard to find, and do not guarantee instant updates. RSS remains useful infrastructure, even if it is no longer the main way many people encounter news.
What RSS does—and what it does not
RSS is a machine-readable stream of a site’s published entries, not an app. Atom is a related feed format. A feed reader or monitoring service checks a feed URL and displays newly published items; you do not need to open the XML yourself or see an RSS icon on the page.

Feeds are source-first: they help you keep track of what particular publishers post. They do not cover every website, and a feed may include only titles and summaries rather than the full article. How often a reader checks also depends on that service and the feed.
Where RSS is useful for monitoring
RSS is a good fit when you want to follow a defined set of sources rather than search broadly for mentions. Examples include:
#1 Best Overall
- Internet connectivity
- Displaying RSS feed
- Software: release notes, product announcements, and project updates.
- Security: advisories and vulnerability notices from sources that publish feeds.
- Government and regulation: agency notices, consultation updates, and regulatory announcements.
- Organizations and competitors: company blogs, newsroom posts, and policy updates.
- News: selected publishers or topic feeds, where available.
A feed reader suits personal reading in one consolidated list. If new items need to reach a team channel, email inbox, or another workflow, use a monitoring or automation service that can route feed updates. Compare services on discovery, filtering, alert destinations, history, check cadence, and support for sites without feeds. These are useful evaluation criteria, not a ranking of particular products.
How to find and follow a feed
- Start with the site. Search for the publisher’s name in your reader, or paste a known feed URL. Feedly’s instructions describe both approaches and were last updated November 4, 2024: how to follow a feed on Feedly.
- Try common feed paths. If the site does not show a feed link, test likely endings such as
/feedor/rsson the relevant blog or site URL. These are conventions, not guarantees. - Inspect the page source if needed. Search for
.rss,.xml, or.atom, which may reveal a feed link. A publisher can also advertise feeds through autodiscovery metadata in its pages. - Add and organize. Subscribe to the feed in your reader, then group it by topic or priority. Start with sources whose updates matter; remove dead or noisy feeds as you learn how often they publish.
- Tune alerts for the task. For personal reading, a quiet feed list may be enough. For urgent or team-critical updates, check the monitoring service’s polling cadence, filters, and alert routes rather than assuming a new post will notify you instantly.
For publishers, clearly labeled links near relevant content and feed autodiscovery make subscriptions easier to find. If you maintain a collection of feeds, OPML can represent that collection in a machine-readable directory format. Crossref discusses these practices in guidance aimed at scholarly publishers: Crossref’s RSS guidance.

What to do when a site has no feed
First check whether the publisher offers a feed for a specific section, such as its blog, newsroom, or release notes, rather than the whole site. If none exists, a website-monitoring service can watch the page that lists new content, such as a blog index. A sitemap may also help identify newly listed pages.

A page can change for reasons unrelated to new posts, so look for a service that can target the relevant content area, filter noise, preserve change history, and route alerts. Use a page monitor when the change you care about is absent from the feed or the site does not publish one.

For website screenshots that help inspect page changes visually, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture a page as an image or PDF; its clean-shot process accepts consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. That can make visual checks less cluttered, though a screenshot is not itself a feed or a change-detection system.
How reliable and measurable are RSS updates?
Polling is not necessarily instant
Feeds are retrieved periodically. Inoreader says it usually checks an active feed every 30 minutes to a few hours, with the cadence adapting to activity; that describes Inoreader’s fetcher, not every reader or an RSS-wide guarantee. See Inoreader’s explanation of RSS.
Feed readership is difficult to count
A feed request does not prove that a person read an item. Readers may fetch feeds repeatedly, aggregators may fetch on behalf of many subscribers, and subscriber totals can include inactive or duplicate subscriptions. Some readers can consume an item without requesting the publisher’s webpage, so page visits do not capture all feed reading. Crossref explains these measurement limits in its publisher guidance.

For the same reason, the sources cited here do not establish a representative current count of RSS users or feeds. It is more accurate to judge RSS by whether it covers the sources and update types you need than to infer its overall popularity from a vendor’s feed totals.

Google News still allows publishers to use feeds to create content sections, but Google says it no longer renders feed-provided article text directly in the app and instead sends readers to publisher pages. That is a change in how one product presents feed content, not evidence that RSS itself has disappeared. See Google News Publisher Center’s feed guidance.
