No. RS-485 is an electrical interface for serial communication; Ethernet is a family of networking standards. They can carry data for related protocols, but they are not interchangeable. The most common source of confusion is Modbus, which can run over either an RS-485 serial link or an Ethernet network using TCP/IP.

What RS-485 and Ethernet each define

RS-485, also identified in its standards lineage as TIA/EIA-485, specifies electrical behavior for balanced, differential signaling on a serial link. It describes how transmitters and receivers communicate over the signal wiring; it does not, by itself, define complete messages or what those messages mean. A higher-level protocol supplies that part. Analog Devices’ AN-960 guide describes RS-485 as a physical layer normally used with a protocol such as Modbus or Profibus.

Ethernet is not just a plug or cable type. It is a family of networking standards defined by IEEE 802.3, covering MAC and physical-layer specifications. The physical signaling and medium depend on the selected Ethernet implementation. IEEE 802.3-2022 is the standards listing; ITU-T’s Recommendation G.8020.3 (11/2025) incorporates IEEE 802.3 by reference.

RS-485 vs. Ethernet

Aspect RS-485 Ethernet
Scope Electrical interface for serial communication Networking standards family with MAC and physical-layer definitions
Signaling Balanced, differential signaling on a pair of conductors Depends on the selected Ethernet PHY and medium
What it leaves to other layers A higher-level protocol defines messages and their meaning Higher-level protocols, such as IP, provide network and application functions
Example use Modbus RTU over a serial link Modbus TCP over Ethernet/IP
Connection hardware RS-485 interface or transceiver and suitable serial wiring Ethernet interface/PHY and compatible network equipment

These categories overlap in purpose—both move data—but not in electrical signaling or network structure. Ethernet has physical-layer specifications too, so the distinction is not simply “hardware versus software.”

Multi configuration methods: supports Web browser configuration, obtaining dynamic IP via DHCP,DNS protocol connected domain server address. MQTT/JSON to Modbus: more flexible conversion between different protocols.
  • Multi hosts roll-polling support: different network devices will be identified and responsed respectively, no more crosstalk issue while communicating with multi network devices
  • User-defined heartbeat/registration packet: easy for cloud communication and device identification.

Why Modbus appears with both

Modbus is a communications protocol, not another name for RS-485 or Ethernet. The Modbus Organization’s introduction explains that Modbus does not prescribe one physical network and can use choices including EIA/TIA-485 and Ethernet via TCP/IP.

  • Modbus RTU: Modbus data carried over a serial connection, commonly using RS-485.
  • Modbus TCP: Modbus data carried over TCP/IP on an Ethernet network.

Seeing “Modbus” on equipment that offers either connection does not make the connections the same. The protocol is the shared element; the underlying interface and transport differ.

Can an RS-485 device connect to Ethernet?

Not by assuming a direct cable connection will work. The RS-485 device and Ethernet equipment use different interfaces. Connecting them generally requires a suitable gateway or bridge, and the right choice depends on the protocols and functions supported at both ends. Some gateways also convert between protocol variants, but that capability must be checked for the actual devices; the standards alone do not guarantee compatibility.

For example, a Modbus RTU device on RS-485 may need a gateway that can communicate with that serial device and expose the appropriate Modbus TCP service on Ethernet. A passive adapter that only changes connectors does not by itself make the electrical signaling or protocol compatible.

Do RS-485 and Ethernet have fixed speed or distance limits?

There is no single universal speed or cable-length figure for either name. Ethernet includes multiple PHYs and media, so a meaningful figure requires a specific implementation. RS-485 performance likewise depends on the transceivers, cable, data rate, and installation conditions.

Schneider Electric Australia’s RS-485 wiring FAQ lists reference figures of 32 transmitters, 32 receivers, 4,000 ft maximum cable length, and 10 Mbps maximum data rate. These are that vendor FAQ’s figures, not a universal guarantee; its maximum distance and maximum data rate should not be assumed to be achievable together. The page does not state a publication date.
