RF describes radio-frequency signals, while cable usually means a physical transmission line or a cable-based service. A coaxial cable can carry RF, so the terms can describe parts of the same system without being interchangeable.
What does RF mean?
RF stands for radio frequency. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) defines it as the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum from 3 kHz to 300 GHz. Radio and television transmitters, mobile phones, microwaves and radar produce RF fields; RF is used to transmit information for communications and broadcasting. ITU EMF Guide, version 1.1
In practical terms, RF describes the signal or frequency involved—not whether that signal travels through open air or along a wire.
What does cable mean?
In a television or broadband installation, “cable” can mean the physical line carrying a signal, the network built from those lines, or the service delivered over that network. Coaxial cable is one common physical medium. It has a central conductor, a dielectric insulating layer and an outer conductor that surrounds the centre; ITU-R describes it as a shielded transmission line. ITU-R Recommendation F.1610-0, February 2003

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The key distinction is that RF is about the signal, while coax is one possible path for that signal.
How RF and cable work together
A coaxial cable can guide RF signals between equipment or through a cable network. That does not make RF a kind of cable: RF may also travel wirelessly, and a cable may carry signals other than RF.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Cable television and broadband networks may use hybrid fibre/coaxial (HFC) architecture. Fibre carries optical signals through part of the network; those signals are converted to electrical form for coaxial transmission on the last-mile segment. Full-fibre service instead brings the optical signal to the customer’s premises. ITU-T Supplement 11, October 2025
In that supplement’s described digital cable-TV context, modulation is usually below 770 MHz, subject to national regulations. That is not a universal frequency limit for every cable system or region.

RF versus cable at a glance
| Question | RF | Cable |
|---|---|---|
| What does it name? | A radio-frequency signal or range of electromagnetic frequencies. | A physical transmission medium, or by extension a network or service. |
| What role does it play? | It carries information through a signal. | It can provide a physical path for signals, including RF. |
| Example | A wireless radio transmission. | Coaxial cable carrying a television or broadband signal. |
What “cable” means at home
A typical home connection may use a coaxial drop from a feeder network. A 2004 ITU-T glossary defines a cable-TV drop cable as the coaxial cable running from a tap on the nearest feeder to a residence or service location. ITU-T Recommendation J.112, Annex B, March 2004
That physical connection is distinct from the signal it carries and from the broader cable service. A network can also combine fibre and coax rather than using coax for the entire route.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Choosing coaxial cable for a setup
RG-6 is a coaxial cable category often encountered in home installations. An ITU publication lists 75 ohms as a typical characteristic impedance for RG-6; this is a reference value, not a guarantee for every product sold under that label. ITU, 5G Basics: Core Network Aspects, 2017
Before buying or replacing a cable, check:
- Connector type at both ends and whether it matches the equipment.
- Required cable length and the installation route.
- Shielding and the equipment or service provider’s specifications.
- Whether the system calls for RG-6 or a different cable type.
Do not choose solely by the word “RF” on a product description: it identifies the signal application, not necessarily the cable’s connector, impedance, shielding or suitability for your installation.

Bottom line: RF is not cable
RF names a signal or frequency range; cable names a physical medium, network or service. Coaxial cable can carry RF, which is why the terms often appear together in television and broadband discussions, but they refer to different things.
