No, the available evidence does not show that Razer Synapse is spyware in the strict sense of secretly capturing your keystrokes or sending undisclosed data. But it is not harmless either. Razer documents that Synapse collects usage and device information, supports cloud-connected account features, and gathers support logs that can contain system and application data. Those disclosures justify privacy scrutiny, and this article explains where the documented facts end and the viral claims begin.

What “spyware” means in this question

“Spyware” is not a single official label that a vendor or regulator applies to a product. In this article, it means software that gathers information about a user or device without their knowledge and may send that information to another party without consent. That description comes from the Android Open Source Project’s privacy guidance, which says spyware is “software that aims to gather information about a user or device without their knowledge, that might send user information to another entity without consent” (Android Open Source Project, Privacy security best practices). It is a general guideline, not a ruling on Synapse.

Under that definition, the key question is not whether Synapse collects data. It does, according to Razer’s own terms. The key question is whether that collection is hidden or undisclosed. On the documents reviewed, the answer is that the main categories are disclosed, while covert behavior has not been demonstrated.

What Razer documents about Synapse data

Razer’s disclosures come from several documents at different levels of specificity. The table below separates what each one says from what it does not establish.

Data or practice What the source says What it does not prove
Razer account and product usage Razer’s Customer Privacy Policy says it may collect information about activity while using its hardware or software and while logged into a Razer ID account. It also lists operating system, software applications, IP address, geolocation, and security status. A complete, Synapse-only telemetry list. The policy covers Razer’s broader products and services.
Synapse online configuration Razer’s Singapore services and software terms list warranty registration details, device type and serial number, operating system, configuration profiles (keybinds, Chroma lighting, macros, power and performance settings), installed games, and Synapse app-usage information. Independent confirmation of exactly what each current build transmits.
Synapse offline use The same terms say offline Synapse keeps the listed data locally and does not upload it to Razer’s cloud while the user stays offline. That the computer has never synced before, or that other Razer services behave the same way offline.
Synapse 2.0 mouse statistics The terms describe an optional feature that collects keystrokes, mouse clicks, wheel rotations, and pointer distance, and say it can be switched on or off in Synapse. That Synapse 4 secretly records general typing. This statement is specific to Synapse 2.0.
Support log bundles Razer’s Log Collector terms describe system and application data, state and event logs, error and debugging information, and pseudonymized identifiers such as Razer ID or session ID. That any particular archive contains only what the terms describe, or that every allegation about one bundle is accurate.

The broad privacy policy

Razer’s customer privacy policy is the widest of these documents. It frames the use of collected information as product development, service operation, understanding usage patterns, and relevant marketing. Read it as the company’s general statement of practice, not as a technical map of what Synapse sends on a given day.

The Synapse-specific terms

The Singapore terms are more concrete because they describe Synapse by name. They separate online mode, where configuration and account-linked data are involved, from offline mode, where the listed data stays on the machine. The copy reviewed for this article is roughly a year old, so readers in other regions or on newer builds should check the current version of the terms that applies to them.

The keystroke-statistics disclosure

The phrase “keystroke statistics” is the claim that most often drives the spyware question, so it deserves precision. The terms that mention keystrokes describe an optional mouse-usage statistics feature in Synapse 2.0. That feature is described as collecting counts of keystrokes, clicks, wheel rotations, and pointer movement, not the content of what you type. The terms say the feature can be turned on or off. Nothing reviewed here shows that Synapse 4 records all typing without disclosure, and nothing shows that the Synapse 2.0 feature is enabled by default in later versions.

Offline use: what the evidence supports

Offline behavior is the most practical question for privacy-conscious users, and the evidence is clearer here than on keylogging. The Singapore terms state that offline Synapse does not upload the listed data to Razer’s cloud while the user remains offline. A Razer Support FAQ result for Synapse 4 also indicates that the app can work without an internet connection after a previous Razer ID login. That FAQ page could not be opened for direct verification, so cite it as a search result rather than as a page you have confirmed.

Offline operation has limits. Cloud synchronization, account services, and some online features will not work without a connection. Do not assume that blocking network access will keep every feature working or that it is a tested workaround. If you want to limit data sharing, look in Synapse’s settings for analytics or diagnostics options. Labels change between versions, and this article did not verify the exact wording in the current build.

Support logs: the more concrete privacy risk

Support logs differ from ordinary telemetry. A telemetry toggle runs in the background, while a log bundle is a file you choose to send to support, which means you can inspect it first. Razer’s Log Collector terms say that users submit logs for a requested support purpose and may decline. They also say that retained files are kept for no longer than six months after the ticket is closed, subject to legal exceptions, and that access is limited to authorized support staff. These are policy statements. They do not verify what a specific archive contains or how well Razer’s security controls work in practice.

  1. Confirm that support has actually requested logs for your issue, and ask whether a smaller set of files would be enough.
  2. Open the archive before uploading it and look at the file names and contents.
  3. Remove or redact personal data that is not relevant to the technical problem. Razer’s terms instruct users to do exactly this.
  4. Upload only the files you have checked, and keep a note of the ticket number and date.
  5. If you decline to send logs, expect that Razer may have less information to diagnose the problem. The terms say declining can limit the company’s ability to assess or resolve the issue.

The viral claims, and what has been corroborated

A Reddit post dated December 7, 2025 in the r/privacy community alleges that Razer collects app interactions by the second and that one support-log bundle exposed app activity, authentication tokens, and a system inventory (Reddit user report, December 7, 2025). That is one user’s account. The article found no independent reproduction of the token or surveillance allegations.

What Razer’s documents do support is narrower. Support logs can contain system, application, and event data, and users are responsible for removing unrelated personal information. That makes careful review before upload sensible. It does not confirm that the specific bundle described in the post contained what the author says, or that credentials were routinely exposed. Avoid repeating the thread’s stronger claims as established fact.

Why disclosure is not the same as innocence

The Android guidance draws a line that is useful here. It treats undisclosed or unexpected transmission of sensitive categories, such as browsing history, passwords, or OAuth tokens, as the kind of behavior that can fall under spyware. A product that openly describes its data collection is in a different position from one that conceals it, even if you object to what is collected. That distinction matters for how you judge Synapse. Disclosed collection can still be more than you want, and it can still deserve scrutiny, but it is not the same finding as covert spyware.

Verdict and limits

Razer documents data collection by Synapse and offers cloud-connected features. That merits privacy scrutiny, especially around account linking, device and usage data, and support logs. The documents reviewed do not demonstrate that current Synapse 4 secretly keylogs or sends undisclosed data in the way the spyware definition requires. A firm technical judgment would need an independent analysis of current builds, such as network monitoring under controlled conditions, which has not been published and was not performed for this article.

If you use Synapse, read the current terms for your region, check the analytics and diagnostics options in the version you have installed, and inspect any log archive before sending it.
