Owncast can technically carry a radio-style stream, but it does not make YouTube Music a permitted source for rebroadcast. Owncast is a self-hosted live-streaming server that accepts an RTMP broadcast from encoder software. You supply the server, configure an encoder, and remain responsible for the music rights, uptime, and network capacity. A YouTube Music subscription should not be treated as broadcast permission.
What Owncast can—and cannot—do
Owncast is a self-hosted destination for live broadcasts. An encoder such as OBS sends it an RTMP stream; Owncast then serves the live feed to viewers. This can carry an audio-led program, including a simple video alongside the audio, but Owncast is not a music library or licensing service. Its technical documentation describes encoding and server setup, not permission to rebroadcast music. See Owncast’s broadcasting setup guide.
Keep two questions separate: whether your encoder can deliver a compatible stream to Owncast, and whether you have permission to transmit the music publicly. The first is a technical configuration question. The second depends on rights, permissions, and applicable law.

YouTube’s Terms of Service say users may not use the service to listen to content other than for personal, non-commercial use, giving “you may not publicly screen videos or stream music from the Service” as examples. The YouTube Terms of Service therefore do not support treating a public radio-style rebroadcast of music from YouTube Music as an ordinary permitted use.

The paid-service terms likewise describe access as personal and non-commercial and restrict public presentations, subject to the stated copyright exception. A paid YouTube Music subscription is not broadcast licensing. See YouTube Paid Service Terms of Service, which states an effective date of February 11, 2026.
Those terms do not decide every possible separately licensed use or local legal exception. For a public stream, use music you created or obtain permissions that cover the intended public transmission and relevant territories. If the project depends on an exception or a specific license, confirm its scope rather than assuming a subscription covers it.

What you need to set up Owncast
- A supported host for the Owncast server, with sufficient network capacity for your intended broadcast and audience.
- Encoder software that can publish RTMP, such as OBS.
- For a manual Owncast installation, ffmpeg and reachable web and RTMP ports.
- Music and other audio you are entitled to transmit publicly.
Owncast’s manual installation guide documents web port 8080 and RTMP ingest port 1935 as defaults. Your host firewall, cloud firewall, and network configuration must allow the required traffic to reach the server. Raspberry Pi arm64 and arm7 builds are covered in the guide; ARMv6 is unsupported. Configure and test the broadcast
- Install Owncast on your host. Follow the manual installation instructions for that system and install ffmpeg for a manual install. Confirm that the web interface and RTMP ingest are reachable through the relevant firewalls; the documented defaults are ports 8080 and 1935.
- Secure the initial setup. Change the default administrator password and stream key immediately after first login. Do not reuse or publish example credentials from installation documentation.
- Set the encoder destination. In your RTMP encoder, enter the Owncast server address and publish using its
/livepath and stream key. Encoder field labels differ by application, so map the server address, path, and key to the equivalent fields in your software. - Choose compatible encoding. Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for broad documented compatibility. For a music-focused stream, audio bitrate may warrant a higher setting than speech; the documentation gives 96, 128, 192, 256, and 320 kbps as examples, not mandatory settings or guaranteed quality levels. Choose in light of your source audio, audience playback needs, and available bandwidth.
- Run a real playback test. Check that the encoder connects, audio is clear at the viewer end, and the stream remains stable with your chosen settings. Test the intended host and network rather than assuming a device class or configuration will handle a particular audience size.
Limitations and ongoing responsibilities
- Rights remain yours to resolve. Owncast transports the broadcast; it does not grant rights to music obtained from YouTube Music or any other source.
- You operate the infrastructure. With a self-hosted server, you are responsible for server setup, reachable ports, network capacity, maintenance, and stream uptime.
- Configuration affects compatibility and resources. Codec, audio bitrate, video settings, and host capacity all matter. The documented bitrate examples are options to evaluate, not a universal best setting.
- Audience playback needs a test. Verify the stream from the devices and networks your viewers are likely to use before relying on it.
